UC Berkeley student’s ‘chicken rescue’
trial goes to jury, testing animal rights movement

During his closing argument in a Sonoma County trial that could reverberate throughout America’s animal rights movement, Deputy District Attorney Matt Hobson seized several opportunities to stress something that should have seemed obvious: The defendant — not animal agriculture — is on trial here. His need to reiterate that point Tuesday spoke to the unique nature of this case. It’s not just that Zoe Rosenberg, a 23-year-old Berkeley undergrad and animal rights activist, is facing nearly five years in prison for taking four chickens valued at around $24 from a Petaluma-area poultry processing facility. By spurning a plea agreement, she had intended to force an examination of the meat industry’s practices.

Comments:

She and her fellow travelers conspire to steal people's livestock. They claim that animals have a human right to be taken from owners. The judge told them their argument was nuts and was not justified as a defense. Kudos to the judge.

I am a died in the wool farm kid (65 yrs old). I follow two Facebook vegan groups. There is a clear distinction of vegans: One group is vegans who only eat vegetable, fruit and nuts. They worry about their diets. The other I label militant vegans. They are soldiers, they demand everyone must change their lives, I call them zombies. Several times a day I call them out on things so stupid its almost unbelievable. I especially watch for theft. They see nothing wrong with stealing an animal to save a life. My father would have said leave them be, they aren't hurting anything. I agree with him but someone should help them by offering A reasonable explanation for the stupidity in their articles Ted The truth is I enjoy arguing with them

New York City mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani was hit with two criminal referrals Tuesday filed by a campaign finance watchdog accusing the lefty socialist of accepting illegal contributions from foreign donors. The Coolidge Reagan Foundation filed the referrals – alleging Mamdani may have violated the Federal Election Campaign Act and New York Election Code – with the Department of Justice’s Criminal Division and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office on Tuesday. The referrals were filed after The Post reported earlier this month Mamdani’s campaign raked in nearly $13,000 in contributions from at least 170 donors with addresses outside the US – including one from his mother-in-law in Dubai.

Russia is amassing nuclear weapons and attack submarines in the Arctic Circle as it prepares for war with Nato, Norway’s defence minister has warned. In an interview with The Telegraph, Tore Sandvik said Oslo had detected increased weapons development on Russia’s Kola peninsula, where its prized Northern Fleet and parts of its nuclear stockpile are based. He also said that Vladimir Putin was trying to gain full naval control over the Arctic region so that he could block Nato allies’ access to two key shipping routes that would help resupply Western forces in wartime.

A Colombian court on Tuesday acquitted former President Alvaro Uribe of fraud and bribery charges in a long-running case over alleged witness tampering that could have placed him under 12 years of house arrest. However, a senator involved in the proceedings said he would appeal the decision, potentially sending the case to the Supreme Court. Uribe, who led Colombia’s executive branch from 2002 to 2010, was sentenced in early August, making him Colombia’s first-ever former president to be criminally convicted. The three-magistrate panel ruled in a decision that the evidence cited by the judge who sentenced Uribe was not sufficiently strong or legally valid to merit the conviction.

The United States has transferred two survivors of a Thursday military strike in the Caribbean to their home countries—Colombia and Ecuador—for detention and prosecution, President Donald Trump announced on Saturday. The move spares the U.S. military from navigating complex legal challenges related to detaining suspected drug traffickers under wartime laws. Both men have since arrived in their respective nations, according to local authorities. Colombian President Gustavo Petro confirmed on X that the detained Colombian “will be processed according to the law,” while an Ecuadorian government source reported that the other survivor arrived Saturday morning and will face legal proceedings.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has launched a legal battle at the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to block California and Washington from issuing commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) to immigrants who are not legally in the country. The dramatic move comes in the wake of a deadly August crash on the Florida Turnpike that killed three people, allegedly involving an undocumented truck driver licensed in both West Coast states. The lawsuit alleges that the “sanctuary state” policies of California and Washington have willfully disregarded federal safety and immigration-status requirements for commercial drivers. The filing asserts the states “ignore the ability to read road signs to drive commercial motor vehicles.”

Hamas fighters have dramatically reasserted control in Gaza, defying Israeli demands for disarmament just a day after U.S. President Donald Trump was in the region signing the ceasefire agreement. On Tuesday, the militant group solidified its return by carrying out public executions of men accused of collaborating with Israeli forces. A video circulated Monday, whose authenticity was confirmed by a Hamas source, showed seven men dragged into a crowd, forced to their knees, and shot from behind in Gaza City. The move underscores the “daunting hurdles” facing efforts to move Trump’s ceasefire plan toward a longer-term resolution.

Los Angeles firefighters did not use thermal imaging technology to detect lingering embers underground after a New Year’s Day fire in Pacific Palisades that flared up days later to become one of the most destructive infernos in the city’s history. Interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva said in an interview Wednesday that fire officials decided against employing the technology, which would have pinpointed heat underground, because of the fire’s eight-acre size. In the 36-plus hours that crews spent mopping up, firefighters “cold trailed” the perimeter, chopping a line around the fire and feeling for residual heat. They packed up and returned the next day, after a report of smoke

In a sharply divided vote, Spain’s parliament on Wednesday formally ratified a sweeping arms embargo on Israel, converting what had been an executive decree into permanent law. The motion passed by a narrow margin of 178 to 169, closing a political chapter and heightening tensions between Madrid and Tel Aviv. This new law has changed the status of the two‑year moratorium enacted at the onset of Israel’s war in Gaza into a binding statute. The newly approved legislation bans the export and import of all defense and dual‑use technologies, and it prohibits ships and aircraft carrying fuel or military‑usable cargo from entering Spanish ports or airspace.

(F)oreign terrorist organization (FTO) status would trigger powerful federal tools — financial sanctions, travel restrictions, asset freezes, and criminal penalties.

Now he tells us, after he long joined other climate alarmists in warning of “disaster,” as the West burned trillions on “decarbonizing” and steered economies toward the stone age. The “doomsday view” that “cataclysmic climate change will decimate civilization” is “wrong,” the Microsoft co-founder writes; people will “be able to live and thrive in most places on Earth for the foreseeable future.” His 2021 book “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster” somehow missed these truths; he predictied instead that global warming “could be worse” than COVID.

With billions more customers available overseas and Springsteen’s status as a global superstar, you’d think that’s where the money is.Nope. The movie only scooped up another $7 million internationally, which means that its overall global take was a measly $16 million. How bad is that?Well, box office analysts believed the worst it would do just here in America was $15 million, and it ended up only barely topping the domestic worst-case scenario all over the world. Is this a case of “Go woke, go broke?” Well, as I wrote on Sunday,

Ronald Reagan was known for a typically cogent observation about government: "Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." As is so often the case, he was right. He likely didn't foresee the onset of electric vehicles and the climate scolds' touting of them to prevent the planet from catching on fire; those were subsidized before they ever moved in the first place. But those subsidies are gone now, and so a bunch of people who worked on vehicles and batteries are finding themselves out of work.

The Washington Post first reported the firings. A White House official told the newspaper that new members who were more aligned with Trump’s "America First" policies would be named to the commission.
