A man living in Louisiana has been arrested on charges that he joined in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israeli civilians. Mahmoud Amin Ya’qub al-Muhtadi, 33, was charged with fighting alongside Hamas in the massacre that killed more than 1,200 Israelis, according to The New York Times. A complaint filed by the FBI said al-Muhtadi faces charges that include providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and visa fraud. The document said al-Muhtadi was a member of the Domestic Front of the Liberation of Palestine, which has been designated as a terrorist group. The complaint said that the resident of Lafayette, Louisiana, had been a top member of the group.

NBC News will be terminating 150 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) employees who are responsible for "Black, Latino, Asian and LGBTQ+" coverage in the newsroom. The Wrap, in an exclusive, reported that NBC News was firing its teams dedicated to issues affecting those communities. NBC News executive vice president of editorial, Catherine Kim, announced the cuts to staff on the morning of Oct. 15. Kim claimed that the layoffs made things a “difficult day for a lot of us,” the Wrap reported. The Wednesday newsroom massacre comes as NBC News splits from its sister news network, MSNBC. The court hearing for the man accused of stabbing a Ukrainian woman to death on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina, will not happen until next year. The suspect, Decarlos Brown Jr., is accused of brutally killing Iryna Zarutska in August while she was sitting in her seat on the train, WBTV reported Wednesday. Smartmatic — the company involved in a defamation lawsuit against Fox News over the latter’s reporting on the 2020 election — was indicted by a federal grand jury in Miami on Thursday for allegedly bribing a Philippine official in relation to the 2016 Philippine national elections. The indictment added the parent company of Smartmatic, SGO Corporation Ltd., as a defendant in the case already underway against three Smartmatic executives. The indictment charges that between 2015 and 2018, Smartmatic executives Roger Alejandro Piñate Martinez, Jorge Miguel Vasquez, and others “caused at least $1 million in bribes to be paid” to the former chairman of COMELEC, according to the Department of Justice.

Former Secretary of Education, Senator and university president, Lamar Alexander, declared in the Wall Street Journal that “Donald Trump Isn’t a University President.” The old-school political insider and prior university administrator, goes on to criticize President Trump’s “Compact for Higher Education,” which would establish a national board of trustees for the 6,000 universities and colleges across the United States. Senate Democrats voted Thursday to block the annual, full-year Defense appropriations bill, despite the measure passing out of committee with strong bipartisan support earlier this year. The vote is the latest sign of deteriorating bipartisan relations on Capitol Hill as the government shutdown drags into a third week.
