Actress Dame Patricia Routledge, known for playing Hyacinth Bucket in classic TV sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, has died at the age of 96. She also starred in Alan Bennett's TV monologues and played BBC One's amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp, while also enjoying an acclaimed stage career. Her agent told the PA news agency on Friday that she died "peacefully in her sleep this morning surrounded by love". The BBC's director of comedy was among those paying tribute, saying she "made millions laugh and left a legacy that will always be remembered with gratitude and admiration".

Comments:

Rest in peace, Hyacinth, and thank you for the laughs over the years. BTW, she was also in the movie, To Sir With Love with Sidney Poitier, which is where I first saw her act.

I love that show! I have all the episodes on DVD. Hyacinth, her husband Richard Bucket, her sisters Daisy, Rose, and Violet ("the one with a swimming pool and room for a pony"), her neighbor Elizabeth (who was forever nervous around Hyacinth when invited over for tea and biscuits, spilling her tea because she was so anxious not to offend Hyacinth), and Elizabeth's brother Emmet. Not to forget Daisy's hilarious husband Onslow! My family and I watched that show over and over, knowing what the coming jokes were, but laughing deliriously when the jokes arrived. Completely hilarious! What a delightful show! I also enjoyed the comedy about the World War II French resistance, "Allo, Allo." Genuine, delightful humor!

Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) called Secretary of War Pete Hegseth a “laughing stock.” Host Jake Tapper said, “You’re a veteran, so I would be remiss if I didn’t ask you what you thought of Secretary Hegseth and President Trump’s discussion before the generals at Quantico?” Gallego said, “I think it’s absolutely ridiculous. It was number one — it politicizes more the military, which is what you don’t want to do. As someone who has sat in briefings of that nature, it really tells you what’s happening. You know, it’s definitely clear that the Secretary of Defense is trying to compensate for something.

A Build-A-Bear Workshop employee in Tukwila, Washington, allegedly refused to allow a 16-year-old girl to name her stuffed bear after slain conservative icon Charlie Kirk, crumpling up the commemorative birth certificate that comes with each teddy and tossing it in the trash. Evi McCormick, 16, visited the Build-A-Bear store at Southcenter Mall with friends on Friday to create a special teddy bear in memory of Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was tragically assassinated on September 10 while speaking at Utah Valley University. Kirk had inspired McCormick for years,

My Mom, a child of the Depression and a young adult during World War 2, even in the Reagan era, was not a fan of the legacy media, then, pretty much the only media. She didn't trust them too much, and she was fond of an (apocryphal) quote from WW2, from U.S. Navy Admiral William "Bull" Halsey, who, when asked by an aide what he should tell the press about an upcoming operation, replied, "Tell them nothing. When it's over, tell them who won." That's how military communications should be carried out. There's a level of security that should be taken for granted, and that means, in certain cases,

Democrats are dead-set, for now, in voting against the GOP’s clean seven-week continuing resolution, which has spending levels maintained at Biden-era levels, and with no Republican initiatives. Democrats supported everything funded in this CR before, (Snip) So, with the works still gummed up, the meme game has never been more elite. In the movie “As Good As It Gets,” Jack Nicholson was asked how he writes female characters so well. His answer, hilariously, was, “I think of man, and then I take away reason and accountability.” That is exactly what it is like to talk with a Democrat. They honestly live on a different planet, which is fine. The problem comes in when they try to force everyone else to live in that world – normal people aren’t interested in pretending there’s no difference between boys and girls, as none of us would be here without that difference, and we’re big fans of that difference –

When Logan’s father Dean heard the boy’s screams and tried to rescue him, Exantus stabbed Dean, too, threw him ten or more feet, and stomped on his head. The Schumer Shutdown is dragging into the weekend, with neither side budging. Republicans pushed for a straightforward continuing resolution to keep the government funded through November, but Democrats chose to hold the line for their wish list of radical spending priorities—billions and billions of dollars’ worth—and in doing so, shut the government down. The media has focused on their demand for free health care for illegal immigrants, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a lot more buried in this standoff that isn’t getting the attention it deserves. Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.) took to the Senate floor this week and laid out, in his trademark blunt and hilarious fashion,

On the latest episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, the HBO host torched Kamala Harris’s newly released memoir 107 Days, calling it a self-pitying exercise in blame-shifting and delusion. Maher mocked both the tone and the premise of the book, which recounts Harris’s disastrous 2024 presidential campaign. “Kamala Harris’s new memoir of the ‘24 election is called 107 Days,” Maher began, “but it should have been called Everyone Sucks But Me.” He added that 107 Days was “a victim’s title because, get it, she only had 107 days to win.” Then, with his trademark sarcasm, Maher reminded the audience that Harris hardly entered the race as an underdog.

Pope Leo XIV continues to make thinly veiled jibes against the Trump administration’s stance against illegal immigration. Speaking in front of thousands of pilgrims at St. Peter’s Square on Sunday, Leo warned that migrants must not be treated with “the coldness of indifference or the stigma of discrimination.” Without singling out any country in particular, Leo said that Catholics should “open our arms and hearts to them, welcoming them as brothers and sisters, and being for them a presence of consolation and hope.” Leo explained that the church was living through a “new missionary age” that tasked its members with providing “hospitality and welcome, compassion and solidarity” to migrants coming to the West.

The $8 billion Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children, also known as WIC, provides vouchers to buy infant formula as well as fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat milk and other healthy staples that are often out of financial reach for low-income households. The shutdown, which began Wednesday, coincided with the beginning of a new fiscal year, meaning programs like WIC,

Generally speaking, the people of Gaza are barbarians. That’s not true to a person, but it’s true as a people. Their education level is extremely low, even in comparison to the education levels in Democrat-controlled big cities in America. They live in abject poverty. Their economy is primitive and much of it is barter-based. Their currency, to the extent they use one, is the Israeli shekel but U.S. dollars and Jordanian dinars are in regular circulation as well. Their unemployment rate is thought to be around 80%, though figures are hard to come by. There’s scarcely any industry. There are few stores, and their shelves are empty. Most of this squalor is endemic.

Fusion energy skeptics consistently scoff at the notion that the technology required to create unlimited pollution-free power by superheating hydrogen atoms in a pressurized containment vessel is always "ten years away." There is no question that the requirements to create a sustained fusion reaction are daunting – and expensive. Yet the nation that solves the challenge will have access to infinite power that will allow it to dominate the globe, and apply it cleanly and limitlessly to literally everything and anything that requires electricity. The fusion skeptics are not only short-sighted but may also be absent an appreciation of how successful, strategic investments are made.
