Trump’s Second Term Resets Washington’s Playbook

Remember the good old days when the FBI would hang out in the parking lots of Catholic churches where the traditional Latin Mass was celebrated? The Bureau claimed that such churches were a breeding ground for what the Biden administration called “domestic extremism” and offered plenty of scope for what the FBI called “mitigation opportunities.” Hence, they jotted down the license plate numbers of the parishioners who just got done reciting really dangerous things like “Sanguis Christi custodiat me in vitam aeternam.” “See? See? They’re talking about blood!”

Notice that during the first Trump term that Trump, new to DC, took counsel from the establishment Republicans and where did that get him, a lot of DC establishment figures that he had to dump after short periods of time. But now during the second Trump term he has not hired very many DC establishment Republicans, instead he has hired almost all outsiders to fill positions in his administration. There has to be a good reason for that!

Fight the rise of political violence —
by calling out victim culture

There was a time in America when political violence provoked near-universal horror and condemnation. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan was a deeply polarizing figure — but when he was shot, his surgeon famously said, “Today, Mr. President, we are all Republicans.” That principle is fading, as we saw last month after the murder of Charlie Kirk. In a Manhattan store, I overheard a customer discussing that news: “I agree he was evil, but I do not think he could’ve been shot by anyone more evil.” “Trump will get worse now,” the cashier replied. Their tone was casual, as if they were talking about the weather.

What the shutdown meme war says about
both parties

We don’t know how the government shutdown will end. We do know what its defining image in Washington will be: A computer-generated sombrero, plopped onto the heads of prominent Democrats, accompanied by an equally cartoonish Pancho Villa mustache. The sombrero meme started with pro-Trump social media accounts and quickly jumped to the president himself, who shared an AI-generated video of Democratic leaders with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wearing the stereotypical costume. Reporters in the Brady Room earlier this week were greeted by the meme on a loop; the vice president, addressing them on the shutdown, laughed at Democrats who were offended by the trope.
The shutdown exposes 3 critical weaknesses

Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer says that there’s only one party that wants to shut the government down. He’s right: it’s only Democrats who won’t allow the Senate a few more weeks at current spending levels to agree on a new budget. The shutdown highlights three weaknesses undermining the Democrat Party as we head toward next year’s midterm elections. First, the left wing of the party is running the show. Schumer is terrified of being primaried by New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC); his obstinance is a matter of survival, not conscience.

Staffers with the Small Business Administration who were placed on furlough set up automatic response emails pinning blame on Democrats for the shutdown, which they said already has affected hundreds of businesses from accessing millions in funding. "I am out of office for the foreseeable future because Senate Democrats voted to block a clean federal funding bill (H.R. 5371), leading to a government shutdown that is preventing the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) from serving America’s 36 million small businesses," an automatic response from a furloughed SBA employee received by Fox News Digtal reads.

Freshman Arizona GOP Rep. Abe Hamadeh said that he was one of three Republicans who was targeted by former President Joe Biden under the “Quiet Skies” program, which was shut down under the Trump administration. Earlier this week, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee held a meeting to examine allegations that the Biden administration abused the Quiet Skies program. The program started in 2010 under the Transportation Security Administration in order to monitor travelers based on behaviors to look out for security risks of those not on a watchlist.

Following the end of World War II in 1945, a defeated Germany was divided into four occupation zones, controlled by the Allied powers: the United States, France, Great Britain and the Soviet Union. In 1949, two states emerged: the democratic Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) in the West, and the socialist German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the East, with the latter being under Soviet control. From that point on, Germany was divided. Citizens of East Germany were only allowed to travel to the West under strict conditions. The GDR's borders were heavily guarded, and a massive wall was built around West Berlin

They can’t stop it. They’re powerless. And we don’t care if you’re upset. The memes will continue until the government reopens. It’s asymmetrical warfare—I love it. The Democrats never expected to be hit like this during the Schumer shutdown, and it shows. They are seething over President Trump’s trolling of Democrats over their little show here. Liberals want $1.5 trillion for illegal alien health care and NPR funding. That’s the crux of why they decided to shut down DC. When talks failed, Trump posted a video of Hakeem Jeffries, K-Mart Obama, standing next to Chuck Schumer with a moustache and a sombrero, where the latter rattled off reasons

As the federal government shutdown continues, a clip from the 2019 Democratic presidential primary went viral when the candidates were asked if they support providing healthcare to those in the country illegally. "Is JD Vance a liar or just woefully ignorant when claiming that Democrats want to give health benefits to undocumented immigrants?" disgraced ex-Democratic Minnesota Sen. Al Franken posted to X on Wednesday, leading to the clip being posted in the comments by one user. "Raise your hand if your government plan would provide coverage for undocumented immigrants," NBC News anchor Savannah Guthrie asked while moderating the June 2019 debate followed by all ten Democrats on stage raising their hands.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a blunt message to military leaders from around the globe this week: Get fit, get on board with the Trump agenda or get out. It marked the first time generals from around the world had been summoned to convene with the secretary, and many had expected closed-door announcements on trimming the general officer corps, drawing down forces in the Middle East and Europe or cutting civilian and contractor roles. Instead, what they got was a televised address from Hegseth and President Donald Trump. The secretary pushed a populist message of handing decision-making back to the warfighter, requiring senior leadership to perform physical training in line

Not to mention fattening her own wallet. The paper clip, she likes to explain to anyone who will listen — mostly on MSNBC — symbolizes a Norwegian protest against Adolf Hitler in World War II.

Her Grace Chelsea Clinton — Queen of the Nepo-Babies, Heir to the Neoliberal Throne — has announced a brand-new podcast in which she resurrects the long-discredited “fact-check” scam in order to counter MAHA “misinformation.” (Chelsea’s new podcast coincidentally happens to be the exact same in mission and scope as her failed previous podcast, “In Fact with Chelsea Clinton,” which lasted less than a year.) Aside from (mis)informing listeners about all manner of health issues, the stated goal of the podcast is to help stand up an army of liberal talking-point robots programmed to “debunk misinformation over coffee, cocktails or wherever it might come up.”

A federal judge in Oregon temporarily blocked the Trump administration’s plan to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops to Portland — the same day federal agents unleashed tear gas and mace on anti-ICE agitators after more than 100 straight days of unrest. US District Judge Karin Immergut, a Trump nominee, ruled Saturday that deploying active-duty troops to secure the “war ravaged” Oregon city would violate the US Constitution and federal law barring military involvement in domestic law enforcement. “The relationship between the federal government and the states, between the military and domestic law enforcement, and the balance of powers between the executive,

It was number one — it politicizes more the military, which is what you don’t want to do. As someone who has sat in briefings of that nature, it really tells you what’s happening. You know, it’s definitely clear that the Secretary of Defense is trying to compensate for something.

Updated figures this week indicate that Republican ballot returns have surpassed Democrats for the first time in the 2025 cycle, reflecting a shift that has intensified challenges for Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s campaign against former state lawmaker Jack Ciattarelli. According to election analyst Michael Pruser, 18.6 percent of all mail-in ballots returned so far are from Republican voters, compared to 16.6 percent from Democrats and 9.3 percent from other parties.

His tax increases would raise the top New York City personal income tax rate by a little over 5 percent and the top New York City corporate income tax rate by around 45 percent. If NYC implements the Mamdani-proposed tax increases, a wealthy NYC resident would face a total federal, state and city tax burden of a whopping 53.836 percent.
