BOSTON — A federal appeals court in Boston ruled on Friday that the Trump administration cannot withhold citizenship from children born to people in the country illegally or temporarily, adding to the mounting legal setbacks for the president’s birthright order. A three-judge panel of the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals became the fifth federal court since June to either issue or uphold orders blocking the president’s birthright order. The court concluded that the plaintiffs are likely to succeed on their claims that the children described in the order are entitled to birthright citizenship under the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment.

Nicholas Roske, the man who pleaded guilty to attempting to assassinate Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, has been sentenced to 97 months in prison, a fraction of the 30 years the Justice Department was seeking.
Roske, who now identifies as a transgender woman and goes by the name “Sophie,” was arrested outside Kavanaugh’s home in June 2022 carrying a pistol and burglary tools. He pled guilty in April to attempting to assassinate Kavanaugh.
Judge Deborah Boardman, a Biden appointee, threw out most of the terrorism enhancement that would have resulted in a harsher sentence, opting to hand Roske a sentence of just over eight years, the length of time Roske’s attorneys requested.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the U.S. military killed four “narco-terrorists” on a boat he said was carrying narcotics off the coast of Venezuela on Friday morning, the latest strike on “narco-trafficking” vessels in the Caribbean Sea.
Hegseth said a “kinetic” strike took out a boat affiliated with a designated terrorist organization in the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility.
No U.S. forces were injured during the operation.
“The strike was conducted in international waters just off the coast of Venezuela while the vessel was transporting substantial amounts of narcotics – headed to America to poison our people,”

A large fire erupted at a Los Angeles County refinery following an explosion on Thursday night.
Officers and firefighters responded to the Chevron refinery in El Segundo after receiving multiple reports of an explosion. The El Segundo Police Department is not aware of any immediate injuries or evacuations.
A witness said the explosion felt like a small earthquake.
The refinery has its own fire department. According to Chevron's website, the El Segundo refinery was constructed in 1911. The facility produces 276,000 barrels of crude oil every day and "is the largest producing oil refinery on the west coast,"

The S&P 500 moved up a slight 0.06 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 79 points, or 017 percent. The Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.4 percent.
Bond prices rose, pushing down yields. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell 0.019 percent to 4.087 percent and the yield on 30-year Treasuries dipped 0.022 percent to 4.693 percent. Two years were flat.

A group calling itself “Friends Against Fascism Organization” announced it would hold a “tailgate” party on the University of Virginia campus Friday evening to burn American flags while serving “burgers, dogs and refreshing beverages.” White House rapid response strategist Greg Price shared the group’s flyer on X. The Department of Energy canceled a $630.6 million Biden-era grant that would have funded green energy projects in California, and which Gov. Gavin Newsom (D.) praised as "critical" to the state, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.
According to internal agency documents, Trump Energy Department officials determined that the grant would have been used primarily to support new solar and wind energy projects. State leaders said they planned to use the funding to upgrade 100 miles of transmission lines to enable more green energy to come online as part of the California Energy Commission's so-called CHARGE 2T program.
