Two of the criminal defense attorneys representing Kilmar Abrego Garcia in his federal human smuggling case in Tennessee did not respond to Thursday press inquiries from The Tennessee Star, which sought to confirm that Abrego Garcia reviewed and rejected a plea deal that would have seen him ultimately deported to Costa Rica.
Neither Rascoe Dean of the Nashville-based Sherrard Roe Voight & Harbison, nor Sean Hecker of the New York law firm, Hecker & Fink, replied to the Thursday morning request from The Star to clarify their Saturday filing, which revealed the existence of the plea deal for the first time.
Vanderbilt University on Friday confirmed it is investigating the video published by Townhall, which appears to show a staff member describing an intentional effort to conceal its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs and events in a bid to avoid federal scrutiny under the Trump administration, while simultaneously disparaging U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN).

“An Obama-appointed activist judge issued an order to block ICE from apprehending Kilmar Abrego Garcia upon his release on bail,” wrote Blackburn in a post to the social media platform X. “You can’t make this up. We must pass the Judicial Relief Clarification Act and end this insanity.
State Representative Justin Jones (D-Nashville) on Monday filed legislation that would establish a new criminal offense for law enforcement officers, including federal agents at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), to wear face masks when dealing with the public.
Titled the Stop American Gestapo Act (SAGA), the Democrat’s House Bill (HB) 1442 would make it a Class C misdemeanor in Tennessee for law enforcement officers, including federal agents, to “wear a mask, face covering, or personal disguise while interacting with the public in the performance of the law enforcement officer’s official duties.”

Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville) on Thursday called for Nashville Mayor Freddie O’Connell to rescind the executive order, which he recently modified, mandating Metro Nashville employees report all contacts with federal immigration officials to O’Connell and the Office of New Americans.

A California woman illegally registered her dog to vote and cast two ballots under the canine’s name, according to officials.
Laura Lee Yourex, 62, of Costa Mesa, faces five felony charges, including perjury, procuring or offering a false or forged document to be filed, casting a ballot when not entitled to vote and registering a non-existent person to vote, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Yourex submitted mail-in ballots under her dog’s name, Maya Jean Yourex, during the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary, the District Attorney’s Office said.
The recall ballot was counted, but the primary ballot was rejected.
