The federal government will pay the family of Ashli Babbitt $5 million for her wrongful death at the hands of a police officer during the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol Building.
This comes after the news broke that the White House had reached an undisclosed settlement as a result of a lawsuit the family filed against the federal government in 2024. Under the Biden administration, the government was fighting the suit, but this was reversed after President Donald Trump took office.
From The Washington Post:
Two people briefed on the matter said the Justice Department has agreed in principle to pay just under $5 million to Babbitt’s family,

Now, put Byrd in prison for 30 years for at least manslaughter.

They won't get Ashli back.
$5 million nowhere near enough Her parents should have hired Ben Crump...
Byrd should be serving life without parole.

"A congressional investigation found that the Capitol Police officer who carried out the only killing on January 6th, 2021 had a long history of disciplinary actions against him due to negligence and other shortcomings."
"“This Subcommittee is dedicated to ensuring USCP has autonomy from political pressures so it can make operational and personnel decisions,” said Loudermilk in the letter. “However, based on the information obtained by the Subcommittee regarding USCP’s handling of Captain Byrd following January 6, 2021, and his significant disciplinary history, I have concerns about USCP’s decision to promote him to the rank of Captain.”
"Perhaps the most infamous pre-J6 incident in Byrd’s career since he came to public light was when he left his service weapon, loaded and unattended, in a public bathroom on Capitol Hill in 2019. For this, he was given a 33-day suspension. Shortly after the events of January 6th, Byrd failed a background check while attempting to purchase a shotgun; when he tried to receive a department-issued shotgun instead, he failed the training."
"In 2004, Byrd fired his weapon repeatedly at a stolen vehicle as it was being driven out of the neighborhood in which he lived. And in 2015, a complaint was filed against Byrd for “conduct unbecoming an officer” after an off-duty Byrd confronted a fellow officer while the officer in question was working at a high school football game; the officer who filed the complaint said that the language used by Byrd, who is black, had racial overtones against the officer he harassed."

"Michael Byrd, who fatally shot rioter Ashli Babbitt as she tried to break into the Speaker’s Lobby, will be promoted to captain, according to an internal announcement reviewed by CQ Roll Call that lists more than 30 employees moving up the ranks on Sunday."

Now strip Byrd for every penny he's got or will ever have. Yes, and provide him plenty of time in the joint to think about it.

Now that it has been acknowledged that it was a great injustice when a Capitol cop shot Ashli Babbitt in the back, it would be nice if this cop was prosecuted and the people responsible for promoting him afterwards are fired.

Byrd is a disgraced failure and seems to have disappeared. To anybody with a dim light of awareness that would be punishment enough. Lock him up anyway, he panicked and fired for no reason.

While I DO agree (a fair amount) about the cop having to remunerate for deeds done, I'd much rather that more than the majority of such remuneration be placed on the chain of command (& others) directly involved in the process that led to such an outrageous (IMHO) response to the the J6 rally in the first place. Our elected & bureaucratic officials have for too long a time period escaped accountability for such instigations. The (so called) 'Left' talks about their railing against hate and retribution when it seems to me that they are the ones that carry those types of flags, at least in these days. That's certainly NOT meant to excuse anyone for similar actions on the so called 'other side', but, to me, it appears the only way to get ppl to stop is to hit the pocketbook. Legally and not through some 'lawfare' mechanism (which seems like simply (yet) another version of hate and such).

This is recompense, not justicet
The $5M is taxpayer money. Taxpayers pay for government malfeasance.
This will continue until actual justice/punishment (not just removal from office/employment) is meted out to the perpetrator(s).

Better than nothing but George Floyd had two funerals.... And once again, the US taxpayer is stuck footing the bill for government employees malfeasance.

WE have lots to be thankful for...WE have common sense in the White House....and Ashli's family will be compensated...NOW let's get her buried in Arlington Cemetery where she belongs....biden's thugs refused her a spot in history...but now...WE can put her to rest where she belongs...she was a combat veteran...and she deserves all the respect WE can give and her family....biden's thugs are not happy about this...but I really don't care...even with the cancer diagnosis...you are still slim in my book.....

Apparently "Captain" Byrd's FB page was rife with BLM messaging and anti-Trump/anti-MAGA rants before he deleted all of it post-January 6th.
