Voting is underway to elect the President of the United Federation of Teachers in New York City. Michael Mulgrew, who has held the position since 2009, is expecting he can sleepwalk into another term. However, under his watch schools are requiring less and less of pupils, to the point where attendance is essentially optional and almost everyone is handed a passing grade. Brooklyn-based Social Studies teacher Mike Dowd writes why it’s time for a change and for basic discipline to be brought back. Officials love to brag about the 84% graduation rate for New York City public-school students.

Isn't this typical modern liberalism? Throw out all the wisdom of the past, because, well, because it's from the past and people have forgotten WHY we do things the way we do them. They find a couple of poster child failures and condemn the whole system. The locals are making a mess of things so we impose liberal federal control over things and drown out local wisdom. Then, things start falling apart. Small problems build up, fundamental principles fall, everything goes to heck, and people start to notice and complain. Then an essential component of liberalism kicks in. Liberals can NEVER, EVER be held accountable for their actions. So, we are not spending enough, we have failure of individuals NOT the policies, we aren't implementing the policies purely enough in accordance with liberal principles, and every other possible obfuscation that can be used. By now, things have fallen apart and people forget that they actually worked much better before the liberal Carpetbaggers got their hands on it. It's also hard to restore structure and discipline and fixed principles to a freewheeling system. People aren't sure what to do. It will take a HUGE effort to turn things around and to do so will require fighting liberals who will be kicking and screaming all the way to the exit doors. Sound familiar?

Were Democrats honest, they would admit that government schools, especially those in NYC, are housing and indoctrination centers to churn out little dissidents, not educated students. When you lower the bar that much, as has been done since the days of "affirmative action" and now DEI, you fail these people and the country, making them less competent and thus less able to support themselves and to serve others competently.

The NYC cesspool rapidly rises while the electorate sheep, Baa Baa, operate their smartphones while paying no attention to the sinking of the educational scenario. Watching reruns of the Kardashians gives them pleasure and hope that questions will be asked about them during a job interview. Baa Baa.

Public schools in many places are just older-child daycare centers where momma and daddy (if they have one) can send them to and now worry about most of the day.

In 2014, Marine veteran J.J. Hanson was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and given four months left to live. Around the four-month mark of his diagnosis, “Hanson had plunged into a deep depression,” according to the Times Union. He lost his ability to read, write, talk and walk and was suffering seizures. Miraculously, experimental treatment and surgery gave Hanson an additional three years of life, during which he and his wife welcomed two sons. But had Hanson have had access to lethal prescriptions to end his own life during those first few months — he may have taken them, so says his wife Kristen.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy unveiled a plan Thursday to revamp the nation’s failing air traffic control system by 2028 — following a deadly plane crash outside Washington, DC and thousands of radar and communications outages that have spooked officials, lawmakers and passengers alike. “This is bold, this is gonna be challenging, but we absolutely can do it,” Duffy declared of his plan, which calls for at least six new air traffic control centers replacing 1960s-era facilities; swapping out old-fashioned copper wiring for fiber-optic, wireless and satellite technology at 4,600 locations; and replacing 25,000 radios and more than 600 radar installations.

In this allegorical scenario, Honey and Hank moved into a cozy home in a small community in New England 30 years ago. The next day, their neighbor, Irene, brings over a hot, homemade casserole to welcome them to the neighborhood. Within minutes, Honey and Irene “connect” in a phenomenon known as human chemistry. They just seem to “get” each other. And as their relationship evolves, they learn that they are on the same page on just about everything: raising kids, favorite foods, must-see TV programs, Mommy-and-Me classes, even the crocheting and knitting that their grandmothers taught them.

Our southernmost continent is, we’ve been told, the suffocating canary in the global coal mine. The more ice loss in Antarctica, the greater trouble we’re in. So what do we make of a study which found that between 2021 and 2023, there was a record-breaking increase in the Antarctic Ice Sheet? We mark it down as another in a long line of misses from the global warming zealots. “Notably, four major glaciers in the Wilkes Land–Queen Mary Land region of East Antarctica reversed their previous pattern of accelerated mass loss from 2011 to 2020 and instead showed significant mass gain during the 2021 to 2023 period,”

The Catholic Church has issued a warning to its clergy in Washington state: Any priest who complies with a new law requiring the reporting of child abuse confessions to authorities will be excommunicated. The new law, which will take effect on July 27, eliminates the long-standing confidentiality of the confessional, forcing Catholic leaders and lawmakers into a highly charged standoff over religious liberty and child protection. However, the Archdiocese of Seattle and several bishops argue that the law not only contravenes church doctrine but crosses constitutional lines, while supporters maintain it is a crucial step to protect minors from abuse.

It’s a sad day in America when the chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court ignores the basic framework of the Constitution he’s supposed to interpret. That’s what happened on Wednesday, when Chief Justice John Roberts took it upon himself to subtly thumb his nose at President Trump and conservatives (snip) … the judiciary is a co-equal branch of government, separate from the others, with the authority to interpret the Constitution as law and strike down, obviously, acts of Congress or acts of the president. That innovation doesn’t work if … the judiciary’s not independent. Its job is to, obviously, decide cases, but in the course of that, check the excesses
