The Pentagon must cut $50B of waste —
put this weapon on the chopping block

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced plans this week to move up to $50 billion of the Pentagon’s budget from “low-impact and low-priority programs” to ones that align with President Trump’s defense strategy — an excellent first step to get the department ready for the threats America faces from China and other adversaries.
But not even cutting every last DEI program and burdensome administrative process will yield anywhere close to $50 billion.
The only way to find that kind of money is to cut weapons programs that no longer meet America’s needs.

I'd like to see something like the old war surplus stores from when I was a kid. You could buy all manner of excess military equipment from tools to tents to uniforms or anything else. I bought a cool gas mask from WW2 when I was a kid. Wore it all over. As an added plus they could sell unneeded guns and ammunition too.

I question the suggestion's validity.
There is a lot of trash, fraud, and graft that can be cut first. I get the impression the author is invested in something and used this opportunity to attack a program he thinks threatens his own favorites. His references to leftist fantasies like Dr. Strangelove, just cement that suspicion in my mind. Very clumsy.
If the US hypersonic cruise missile is part of that "unnecessary" waste, it would make me even more suspicious, and start probing in to who is paying his mortgage...

This should not be hard. Stop funding the Ukraine war and stop leaving our war fighting equipment to the terrorists (Afghanistan). Worked for DoD for 25 years. No one wants their systems or programs to be deleted. Even if these programs are obsolete. Start looking at killing some useless programs. They are out there.

Nukes and all delivery systems are necessary as a deterrent because Russia and China understand that a nuclear first strike would mean the end of civilization. Our submarines terrify them and they are not detectable under most conditions. As for cutting programs, who needs a Mach 6 Blackbird? Drones are the spy planes of the future. Keep AI out of the mix until it has advanced far above its primitive state. The human race has enough lunatics willing to start a nuclear war without some machine doing it.

Let's let DOGE have a go at the Pentagon. I'd love to see the justification for some of those legendary 500 dollar screwdrivers or 750 dollar pliers.

MILSPEC is one reason for 600$ toilet seats. Another reason is that the DOD will request a handful of custom built products.
A lot of costs could be lowered if off the shelf products could be used. I've often thought that we should have a supply corps instead of every branch having their own.
Then there is the end of the year spedapalooza where every dollar in the budget net yet spent, will be spent. Often on superfluous stuff.

I'm with #2. It sounds like RADM Montgomery has a personal beef to settle with the Air Force. The Foundation for Defense of Democracies? Who foots the bill for that beltway think tank?

Well folks...President Eisenhower warned US about the Industrial Military complex....think back to when President Eisenhower was in office....YEARS ago...and he was already worried about an out of control Pentagon....this mess WE called the obama/biden years....for 12 years has done it's dirty work by hiding ole Joe and moving Iranians into the White House....in their quest to RULE over America....but deep in every heart...Americans said..."Oh yeah...says who?"

How about closing most US bases in other countries? Especially in the EU. Excepting a few sub bases, like Spain and Scotland. That would save much more than scrapping the air-dropped nukes. In fact do both.

And The Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR)
By the time a threat is identified, countermeasures designed and prototype tested, then the required competition is completed with all FAR satisfied the end product no longer meets the need and must be modified. The real money is in Change Orders. The requirements for almost every military project will change dozens of times before the end product is deployed.
In WWII the design to deployment of a weapons system was months on budget. Today it is more like 5 years with outrageous cost over-runs.

50b is a pittance for any agency that cannot pass an audit. it is patently inadequate for this perfumed palace.
when do we get audits of the budget-and of the crooks who helped themselves?
