The family of Luigi Mangione, the Ivy League graduate charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, said they were “devastated” by his arrest — as it was revealed the 26-year-old alleged gunman spiraled after undergoing “traumatic” back surgery.
“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” the family said in a statement shared by his cousin Nino Mangione, a Republican Baltimore County delegate, late Monday.
“We offer our prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved. We are devastated by this news,” the Mangione family said.

So, what did United Health Care have to do with this?

He's from a wealthy family. Even if he had been shafted by a health insurance company, his family could cover the expenses. I don't see what he was upset about.

Notice how they only mention the political party of only ONE member of the family--a cousin who is a Republican? I wonder how much digging they had to do to find that out?

I had a friend many years ago. Semi pro basketball player, Mr. Fitness, super healthy diet. Great guy all around. Kind and friendly to everyone. Had some minor surgery and had to go under general anesthetic. Became severely bi-polar shortly thereafter. Something happened that just destroyed him.

Thank the Good Lord I have never had back issues but if I had or ever do the last place you would find me is on a surfboard.
This young man was diagnosed with pretty serious back issues IN CHILDHOOD and should have never been on a surfboard. Even in calmer waters and on a good day, the tumbles surfers have can be devastating if they are not educated or able to wipe out safely. He obviously lifted weights and was physically fit from the pictures. Why take the risk of doing even further damage to your spine with such a dangerous sport?
And why United Healthcare? I am thinking he is very mentally unstable. Sane people do not write "manifestos."

Not an excuse for the hideous thing he did, but a plausible explanation for his state of mind.
Some wondeered about trhe Monopoly money in his backpack. UHC and CEO Thompson hafe been under fire for crearing a monopoly in the health insurancee business. That is certainly true. They not only have their own insurance but under various names "manage" the ativities of other smaller companies. It is these UHC "managers" who determine what treatments will be aithorized or not.

His GoodReads choices were a significant number of books on chronic pain.
Question for nprevious poster: What back ailment did he have in childhood?

He has had this condition in he L5 vertebra since childhood. Recenrtly had an operation to try to repair as the vertebra was significantly out of line. Not an excuse, but an explanatiion of his state of mind.
"Spondylolysis and Spondylolisthesis
Spondylolysis (spon-dee-low-lye-sis) and spondylolisthesis (spon-dee-low-lis-thee-sis) are common causes of low back pain in children and adolescents.
Spondylolysis is a weakness or stress fracture in one of the vertebrae, the small bones that make up the spinal column. This condition or weakness can occur in up to 5% of children as young as age 6 with no known injury. A stress fracture can occur in adolescents who participate in sports that involve repeated stress on the lower back, such as gymnastics, football, and weightlifting.
In some cases, the stress fracture weakens the bone so much that it is unable to maintain its proper position in the spine — and the vertebra starts to shift or slip out of place. This condition is called spondylolisthesis."

#8, I have coverage through Blue Cross/Blue Shield. If UHC is a monopoly, or even trying to be, how is it that Blue Cross/Blue Shield provide this coverage?

FTA: “It looked heinous, with just giant screws going into his spine,” he said. The X-ray picture of Luigi Mangione's lumbar spine--I would like to see another angle--shows four titanium screws, about three inches long. He's had a lumbar fusion operation, no fun at any age. But if that's all he's got, my sympathy is limited. I've had much worse myself.
In mid-August 2018, eleven years after a footfirst fall down a long flight of stairs (the fall arrested with my butt two-thirds of the way down instead of breaking both legs a split second later when I hit the lower floor full gravity force with my feet), I had two spinal fusion operations--eight 3" screws--followed in August 2020 by another fusion operation in my cervical (lower neck) spine--six 3" screws, making fourteen screws in all. The first two operations sent me to a nursing home for a month, but gave me back my ability to walk and stand. Recovery included nine months, thirty minutes a day, in a radiation belt so the cadaveral material would grow over the titanium. The third fusion operation gave me back the use of my right arm. But during all the pain of recovery, I never thought about hurting anyone else. If you can help it, don't ever damage your spine.
The article doesn't make it clear whether the assassin took surfing lessons before or after his back surgery. Surfing is beaucoup fun, but in large enough surf, you can get royally smashed. If there's metal in your spine, you probably shouldn't surf at all, especially in Hawaii where the waves can be world class. After my surgery, I decided to cease playing golf to minimize my pain as I pass age 70, and I'm a professional golfer. A realistic one. I've had my day, and am content. Unfortunately for him, Luigi Mangione, valedictorian from a very wealthy family, has had his day, too. Once convicted of first degree murder, he'll never see the outside again. He got radicalized and went evil. Sayonara.

I have a friend who is a pharmacist. She’s had a couple of surgeries and is allergic to a specific medicine in some anesthesia. A couple of times after surgery, she has left her family for a week until her body metabolizes the medicine.
The article mentioned his family had reported him missing in mid-November.
I’m not one for excuses. But if you read the article and understand back surgery and medicines, this might explain his irrational behavior.
A sad ending to a bright young man.

Luigi "Eyebrows" Mangione. His parents must be so very proud of him.
If he has such a bad back, how did he ride a bicycle in New York City and go on the run for hundreds of miles? It also appears that he had access to funds (his or his family's) to pay for back surgery even if the insurance claim for it was denied.

Time for normal people to create guidelines for the so-called experts in psychological health.
Right now the inmates are running the asylum. That needs to stop, because instead of harming merely themselves they are reaching out and harming and twisting normal people into their image using their so-called expertise in the field to create madness, were there should be healing. Any 'therapy' that reinforces or promotes a human being announcing their psychological self-image differs from their physical reality should result in the institutionalization of that 'expert' and the close evaluation of their patients and students.
Enough is enough.

His life did not turn out as he hoped and he wanted to blame someone, aka, stick it to the Man.
Now his life is truly over, and he is only 26.
