An unlikely friendship has formed between a nine-year-old Louisiana boy and a multimillionaire businessman after the child confused him for a homeless man and offered him his only dollar. (snip) That was when Kelvin Ellis Jr. wandered by and saw Busbice standing in the corner with his eyes closed. (snip) Ellis Jr. unfurled his clenched fist to unveil a $1 bill he had gotten from his father for earning good grades. “And I go, ‘What?'” Busbice told host Steve Hartman. “‘If you’re homeless, here’s a dollar,'” Ellis Jr. recalled telling Busbice. “I always wanted to help a homeless person, and I finally had the opportunity,” the boy said.

Both sides of that random encounter exhibited something refreshingly positive about human nature. A most welcome post to run across in a week that has had some of the worst aspects of human nature on display. God bless both Ellis and Busbice there, and whomever was so effective cultivating that charitable spirit in the boy.

fta: “If you give, you’re actually going to get more out of that,” Busbice said. “I couldn’t grasp that as a kid. And if we can spread that around, everything changes.” Although he was happy to receive the gifts, the nine-year-old said he was not searching for a reward when he tried to give away his dollar to someone in need. “Joy, because I helped someone,” Ellis Jr. said of how he felt. “Give something away, and you feel like you’ve got a lot of things from it.” -- So true. What an excellent young man. Dad should be proud.

California lawmakers are considering a bill that would give preference to African American applicants seeking occupational licenses, for such professions as teaching, nursing, counseling, electrical work and others, especially those who are descendants of slaves. (snip) Under current law, only veterans are eligible for such prioritization. Mr. Gipson argued in the analysis that if such priority can be granted to veterans, similar standards should be applicable to African-American applicants. (snip) The bill, which will now be heard in the Assembly’s Appropriations Committee, passed the Assembly’s Business and Professions Committee on a 13–2 vote last week.

Five middle school female athletes forfeited their positions at a track meet in April after they were informed that they would have to compete against a biological male, prompting the school district to allegedly bar the girls from future competitions, according to WDTV News. The vote also reportedly repealed a ban on same-sex marriages, allowing clergymen to perform LGBTQ wedding ceremonies without repercussions.

The Supreme Court heard arguments Tuesday morning in the case of Fischer v. United States, one of the many criminal cases arising out of the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Like defendants in a large subset of those cases, Joseph Fischer was charged, among other offenses, with obstruction of an official proceeding under 18 U.S.C. 1512(c)(2). Fischer’s case in the Supreme Court challenges whether the events of that day can be prosecuted using this obstruction statute. Most of the justices seemed dubious, or at a minimum concerned, about the Department of Justice’s very broad interpretation of the statute

A new study by researchers at the University of Arkansas and the University of Buckingham, which analyzed 57 international studies, concluded that religious schools are far more effective at teaching children to become engaged citizens than secular public schools — resulting in students who model political tolerance, knowledge, and skills better than their publicly educated peers. The study found that receiving a private, faith-based education increased political tolerance and knowledge by 12 percent of a standard deviation. In turn, receiving such an education also resulted in increased volunteering and community engagement — all positive traits for a healthy society.

However, the method has become controversial among liberal death penalty opponents. After being convicted of killing three men during a 1999 workplace shooting, Miller was set to die by lethal injection.

I think these participants are not representative of a majority of students or voters and that the weak responses of some universities bode ill for their futures. Moreover.
