Nairobi, Kenya — Marathon world record-holder Kelvin Kiptum, who was set to be a superstar of long-distance running and was a top contender for gold at the Olympics in Paris this year, was killed along with his coach in a car crash in Kenya. Their vehicle was the only one involved in the crash late Sunday and Kiptum was driving when it veered off a road and into a ditch before hitting a tree, police said. Kiptum was 24 and one of the most exciting prospects to emerge in road running in years, having broken the world record in only his third appearance in an elite marathon. His record,

Comments:

Kiptum, who set a world record in the marathon last year with a time of 2:00:35 was set to become the first to run an official sub two hour marathon. I follow track and field, and had been paying attention to this great runner. And now he's gone at an early age like Steve Prefontaine. How terrible.

There have been multiple road accidents that have injured or killed Kenyan runners, some of them the best in the world in their events, like Kelvin Kiptum, or like David Rudisha, 800 meter world record holder since 2012, who was fortunately only injured in his road accident. Distance runners like training at altitude, and western Kenya has the altitudes. Although the article only hints at the problem, getting to proper training ground probably involves traveling over some terrible roads with no margin for error. Kiptum, who was driving, apparently made a mistake where he couldn't make one. It's a terrible loss. Here is Rudisha setting the 800 meter world record in the 2012 London Olympics: 1:40.91 for two laps of the track. His record has not been seriously challenged since he ran it. Breaking 1:40 in the 800 meters is something I do not expect to live to see. Rudisha's record is fairly safe. Who could break it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKEOjWEzVGs (Rudisha, world record, 800m)

If you've ever been in a third-world country and seen how they drive, you only wonder why there are not more fatal accidents.

Per OP, Prefontaine redux. For those who have never run a marathon (and even those of us who have), sub-two hours is inconceivable. That's running a mile in 4 minutes and 35 seconds - and then doing it 25 more times.

Asleep or drunk, most likely. Late night driving when either sleepy or drinking has killed many people. Life is all about choices.

Although I would not necessarily assume that alcohol was involved in Kiptum's crash, competitive distance runners have been known to pack in the carbohydrates during training and, especially, before races (pasta, the day before). One way to load up on carbs in training is to drink beer. Steve Prefontaine's car rolled over and came to rest on top of him. At the autopsy, his BAC was 0.16, which would be twice the current legal level of intoxication. There hasn't been a description of the road conditions where Kiptum crashed, but I would imagine that they were terrible, with no room in some places for hanging a wheel off the right of way. Losing this promising young runner so early in his career is hard on track fans who had hoped to see him run 26 miles, 385 yards in less than two hours, perhaps as soon as sometime this year. Tomorrow is promised to no one. RIP, Kelvin and coach.

#5 is right. The most frightening experience in a car that I’ve ever had was in Istanbul, Turkey. We were in a taxi and I was literally curled up on the floor in the backseat footwell. We lost a good friend in Pakistan when his car was hit by a bus.

Are the wheels really beginning to come off the Democrat’s chances of keeping the Presidency in 2024, or is it a ruse? It appears they are behind the eight-ball as to having a winning presidential candidate, but are they really? Do Not Be Fooled. For this discussion, I’m leaving out the possibility of voting irregularities and assuming the race will be fair. (I know, I know…) It became apparent three years ago that Biden would not be able to run in 2024 due to age-related issues. It was even doubtful that he would finish his one term. The not-so-funny joke is that his protective ace card in the hole was Kamala Harris,

News out today that Joe Biden will not take a cognitive test at his upcoming annual physical exam. That will surely reassure everyone. A number of observers suggested last week that Biden’s petulant declaration that “My memory is fine” appears set to take its place beside “I am not a crook,” “There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe,” and “I did not have sexual relations with that woman” in the annals of regrettable and possibly fatal presidential statements. But there’s one other Watergate parallel that has been less remarked: the non-denial denial. Gerard Baker observes in the Wall Street Journal this morning: "The surest testimony

Anybody who is firmly in the "Yeah, the Democrats have to dump Biden before the election" camp might want to pay attention to the number of stories in the mainstream media that are devoted to running interference for our clearly demented president. The Democrats' flying monkeys in the mainstream media have been operating in a truth-free environment for so long that they have no problem telling you that it's your eyes that are lying and not them. The leftist radicals who are running Biden's allegedly A-OK brain have their perfect puppet in place and have no plans whatsoever to usher him off of the political stage.

Is embattled Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas leaking to Axios now? That's my opinion, but more about that in a minute. Axios reports that Joe Biden's White House was a complete clown show on the matter of the border crisis, with Joe himself blowing up at staff over impossible things, staff oozily doing all they could to cravenly pass the problem onto some other guy, and some of them with decision-making power flamingly ignorant and incompetent. The idiocy worsened the border crisis, Axios argued. The title of their piece is "How Biden Botched the Border." It's an exclusive scoop, and it starts like this: "Aboard Air Force One en route to tour the southern border

After months of fighting, Hamas had been forced to fall back to its stronghold in Rafah on the Egyptian border. And the pressure on Israel not to go into Rafah intensified. Not only AOC and Bernie Sanders, but Biden warned Israel not go in because of the “humanitarian impact”. Israel went in and brought out two hostages. The IDF said it launched several airstrikes in Rafah as a diversion for the rescue operation. The rescue unit breached the building at 1:49 a.m. The force came down from the roof and detonated a bomb to breach a door on the second floor, eliminated the Hamas guards and picked up the two hostages.

Late last week President Biden dispatched administration officials to conciliate offended opponents of Israel’s war on Hamas. They were sent — where else? — to America’s jihad capital (i.e., Dearborn). The delegation included deputy national security adviser Jon Finer and USAID administrator Samantha Power. Their object was to smooth relations with the locals. Readers with a long memory may recall Samantha Power as the author of “A Problem From Hell“ and an Israel hater who served in the Obama administration. Power now serves as the administrator of the United States Agency for International Development. She and her friends are themselves a problem from hell. The New York Times

Hamas supporters in Michigan have rallied to warn that they will not vote for Biden unless he stops Israel from bombing their terror group. After a previous delegation came and was rejected, Biden dispatched a high-level delegation led by Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer. Whom did Finer meet with? Hamas and Hezbollah supporters in the most literal and direct sense of the word. Osama A. Siblani, the influential publisher of The Arab American News, a Dearborn newspaper, had meetings with both Ms. Chávez Rodríguez and Mr. Finer’s delegation. He said Arab American voters in Michigan felt betrayed after backing Mr. Biden in large numbers in 2020, arguing that they had “received nothing”

Predictably, the Special Counsel refrained from recommending charges, but the rest of his report was quite damning when it comes to the issue of Biden’s age and cognitive problems. Democrat Jon Tester just got some added competition in his bid for a fourth term in the U.S. Senate. Republican Matt Rosendale, who represents Montana's Second Congressional District, announced on Friday that he plans to run for the Senate in 2024. Should he win the nomination, he'd face a rematch against Tester, who bested him by 3.5 points in 2018. Since then, Rosendale successfully ran for the at-large U.S. House seat vacated by Greg Gianforte (R), who opted to run for governor in 2020. In that race, Rosendale was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and won a six-way Republican primary before facing and defeating Democrat Kathleen Williams.

New York City could soon ban Tide PODS and other laundry-detergent packs under the latest “green” push from lawmakers. The “Pods are Plastic Bill,” introduced by City Councilman James Gennaro last week, would make it illegal to sell any pods and laundry sheets if they’re made with polyvinyl alcohol. Fines for selling the pods would start at $400, double for a second violation and top off at $1,200 for flouting the rules more than twice, if the bill becomes law. The bill would also require education and outreach to businesses on the ban for the first year. The law wouldn’t take effect until Jan. 1, 2026, if passed.
