Florida Highway Patrol says a small airplane with five people from The Ohio State University's airport collided with a vehicle in Collier County on Friday afternoon creating a fiery debris field and closing Interstate 75. Collier County Sheriff's Office confirmed at least two people are dead. Naples-area resident Jinny Johnson happened upon the crash just minutes after it took place, heading north on I-75 around 3:20 p.m. "All of a sudden I saw a lot of black smoke," Johnson said. "It was pitch black. As I got closer, the smoke got a little lighter. And then I saw flames." Flames shot into the air, eating into the plane,

Other contributors to this article: "Naples Daily News and Fort Myers News-Press journalists Liz Freeman, Kendall Little, Bill Smith, Andrew West and Alex Martin and Jim Wilhelm of the Columbus Dispatch contributed to this report." Florida's Turnpike, as well as I-95 and I-75 are Florida's main three north-south routes, and are normally full of cars. If an airplane has to set down on a public roadway, you know that almost the worst has happened. This crash happened on a part of the highway known as the Alligator Alley, one of two main ways (north of the Tamiami Trail--Highway 41--that goes through the Everglades) that turn east from the southwest coast toward Dade and Broward counties.

If I remember correctly, every few miles or so, the interstates are required to be flat so aircraft can land in an emergency. It would seem pretty simple to install roadway “Stop” signs which could only be activated by ATC to help alleviate this kind of accident. Condolences to all.

Looks like a small jet. Would have very high minimum speed, and kinetic energy in a crash is proportional to the square of the speed. A Cessna landing at 40 mph compared to a jet landing at 120 mph.....9 times the energy for every lb of airplane at 120 mph. Even if the jet could slow to 80 mph (unlikely to stay in the air that slow), that's four times the energy per lb to be dissipated on something. That anyone made it out speaks to a pretty good job getting it down, sad that not everyone got out.

Bombardier Challenger-600 22 passenger corporate twin engine jet. Touchdown speed in a landing is 117 kts which is about 134 mph. WAY faster than traffic, so pretty much guaranteed to be hitting vehicles when putting down on an interstate in an emergency, going at least 50-60 mph faster than the fastest traffic. This model was last made in 1983, so at least 31 yeas old. Small jets like this are normally able to still climb pretty well on one engine. The rated single engine climb is over 400 ft/minute, not stellar, but a solidly positive rate of climb. Should have been able to continue to fly on one engine. So....twin engine failures? Those are exceedingly rare unless the fuel is contaminated in both tanks....water in refueling system at airport?

Democrat Jon Tester just got some added competition in his bid for a fourth term in the U.S. Senate. Republican Matt Rosendale, who represents Montana's Second Congressional District, announced on Friday that he plans to run for the Senate in 2024. Should he win the nomination, he'd face a rematch against Tester, who bested him by 3.5 points in 2018. Since then, Rosendale successfully ran for the at-large U.S. House seat vacated by Greg Gianforte (R), who opted to run for governor in 2020. In that race, Rosendale was endorsed by former President Donald Trump and won a six-way Republican primary before facing and defeating Democrat Kathleen Williams.

WASHINGTON — Special counsel Robert Hur has declined to prosecute President Joe Biden for his handling of classified documents, but said Biden’s practices “present serious risks to national security” and added that Biden portrayed himself as an “elderly man with a poor memory” who would be sympathetic to a jury. “Our investigation uncovered evidence that President Biden willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen,” the report said, but added that the evidence “does not establish Mr. Biden’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.” Biden said Thursday he was “pleased to see they reached

President Joe Biden on Wednesday twice referred to the late German chancellor Helmut Kohl instead of former Chancellor Angela Merkel while detailing a 2021 conversation at campaign events. It was the second time this week that Biden had recalled speaking with a European leader who had died years earlier. Biden's gaffes Wednesday came at a series of fundraisers in New York as he described conversations he said he had with European leaders at a meeting of the Group of Seven industrialized nations in the U.K. in 2021, months after the Jan. 6 riot. Biden said at both events that "Helmut Kohl," who died in 2017, had asked him how he

Protesters threw soup at the Mona Lisa on Sunday in the latest instance of deliberately shocking climate activism. While some consider disruptive antics such as this alienating to the public, research into social movements shows there is strategy behind it. By combining radical forms of civil disobedience with more mainstream actions, such as lobbying and state-sanctioned demonstrations, activists not only grab the public’s attention, they make less aggressive tactics more acceptable and possibly more successful. I study the role of disruptive politics and social movements in global climate policy and have chronicled the ebb, flow and dynamism of climate activism. With today’s political institutions largely focused on short-term desires over long-term

There's an old joke I've heard told about just about every industry in the world, but today I'll tell the version about the internet news business. "How do you make a small fortune providing news on the internet? "Start with a large fortune." That old joke has maybe never been truer than it is this week, when The Messenger news site went dark after blowing through $50 million in startup funds — and hadn't even been in business for a year. CEO and founder Jimmy Finkelstein promised investors that The Messenger's appeal to "a big, generic news audience," as Axios described it, would generate $100 million in the first year alone.

If you had made a list of all the actions a “president” could take to destroy the United States of America, it would include almost everything Joe Biden has done since moving into the White House. Biden’s “success” in wrecking this country is helped by a Republican party filled with too many RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) and not enough America First Patriots. Our republic’s Founding Fathers, all men of strong Christian faith who believed in Judeo-Christian values and limited government, would be aghast to see what has become of our country. Many political observers think 2024 is our last opportunity to save the republic. Bernie Marcus, Home Depot co-founder and a

We recognize that eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development.” This cliché-ridden pap begins the exposition of Agenda 2030, developed by the UN to introduce a world government devoid of the concepts of rights, liberty, life and happiness. [SNIP] The announcement set off panic. More than half of Gaza's 2.3 million people are packed into Rafah, which borders Egypt. Many fled there after following Israeli evacuation orders that now cover two-thirds of the territory following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that sparked the war. It's not clear where they could go next. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said any Israeli ground offensive on Rafah would have "disastrous consequences."
