The white-collar class derided mass layoffs
among the blue-collar workers. It’s
about to feel their pain

In “The True Believer,” Eric Hoffer wrote, “Nothing is so unsettling to a social order as the presence of a mass of scribes without suitable employment and an acknowledged status.” We’re about to find out just how right he was. From the 1970s to roughly now, offshoring and automation gobbled up blue-collar factory-type jobs. Auto companies laid off workers by the thousands and sent factories to Canada and Mexico. In 1977, on what Salena Zito calls “the day that destroyed the working class,” Youngstown Sheet and Tube laid off 5,000 workers. Within months U.S. Steel had shut down 16 plants and Jones & Laughlin laid off further thousands. This went on for decades

The auto industry has already perfected the process of building a car with robots and few actual human workers. It's going on right now in South America. Additionally, any outside firms that provide parts for these car companies are located adjacent to the auto plants in order to eliminate shipping costs. Unfortunately for the blue-collar workers in our country, this is the future of auto manufacturing.

I remember a period in the '70's or '80's when GM was closing plants and laying off workers, it seems incredible now, but I seem to recall layoffs of 100,000 at a time.

Being laid off used to be an incentive to getting another job when other positions opened up. The government "fixed" that by paying huge unemployment amounts so the idle workers could stay home indefinitely, thus correcting a problem usually caused by the government.

1st hand knowledge on unemployment The max allowed in Michigan is 362 a week, for 20 weeks.. If you are living on 900 a week, paying for ca and house insurance etc.. and the sole earner in the home- you now meet Federal Poverty Income level- Which then means You qualify for Govt Assistance- Food Medicaid Emergency Relief So, maybe the intent of government is to create more dependency…which leads to more control..

I personally would like to see a lot of the behind the scenes government employees, who actually write the regulations that cause many of these job losses, lose their jobs, with the much needed downsizing of the federal bureaucracy! They need to experience the feeling!

I guess you could call me a white-collar worker. I'm a software engineer in Silicon Valley. It seems that what jobs companies don't ship overseas, they import mostly Asian workers to fill (especially Indians). Fortunately, I saved and invested, and had massive amounts of luck investing so I don't need to work, but I still want one last job. I feel sorry for the white male who isn't ready to retire but can't get work because Asian H1-Bs undercut him (and that happened to me) to the point he can't find work.

Global Positioning System (GPS) disturbances detected across NATO member Poland on Tuesday have sparked speculation of Russian involvement, following a similar incident in the region this month. Polish news outlet Radio Zet portal reported "over northern and central Poland, the GPS signal was again jammed," with Warsaw, Łódź, Tricity and Olsztyn among cities affected and that Swedish military intelligence agency MUST was investigating the cause. Other Polish news outlets reported disturbances and an interference map available on the gpsjam.org website showed the extent of GPS problems across much of Poland, with a high level of interference over Kaliningrad, the Russian enclave that borders the country.

The House passed a short-term spending bill on Thursday, sending the legislation to Joe Biden’s desk with just two days left before government funding runs out. The House approved the bill in a vote of 314 to 108, with 107 Republicans and 207 Democrats supporting the proposal. The House speaker, Republican Mike Johnson, took up the bill under suspension of the rules, so he needed two-thirds of the chamber to support the legislation to get it passed. In a potentially worrisome sign for Johnson, 106 Republicans opposed the bill as hard-right members of the conference called for steeper spending cuts.

Trump is facing RICO charges brought by Willis in Georgia, a move that has left some legal scholars scratching their heads. One of Willis' underlings then shot back by playing the race card. The recent tense exchange unfolded in a group email thread that includes prosecutors and defense lawyers in the case. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a veiled rebuke to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday night, pushing back against Blinken’s claim that Israel could not defeat Hamas in Gaza, and that it should accept a Palestinian state. Without naming Blinken specifically, Netanyahu criticized those who, he said wanted to tie Israel’s hands and said that Israel could not win. On Wednesday, reports emerged that Blinken had told Netanyahu last week that Israel would not succeed in destroying Hamas’s military capabilities — an assertion at odds with Israel’s ongoing military success, and strong Israeli public support for the war. Blinken and the Biden administration also want Israel to accept

The Senate on Thursday passed a two-step stopgap to keep the government funded into March, as lawmakers try to quickly tie up their funding work ahead of a looming shutdown deadline and forecasts of inclement weather on Friday. The Senate voted 77-18 to pass the bill on Thursday afternoon, sending the legislation to the House, which is expected to vote later in the day. As part of the previous stopgap measure passed in November, Congress faces a Jan. 19 deadline to extend funding for agencies that fall under four of the 12 annual funding bills or risk a partial government shutdown.

A hearing will take place in Georgia next month over accusations that Fulton County District attorney Fani Willis and her lead prosecutor on the county’s election-interference case against former president Donald Trump had an improper relationship and mishandled taxpayer funds. The hearing is scheduled for February 15, according to an order from Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee. The judge gave Willis until February 2 to respond to the allegations, which were first reported in a legal filing from one of Trump’s co-defendants, former campaign aide Mike Roman. On "America's Newsroom" Thursday, Texas Lt. Gov. DAN PATRICK: They know they're wrong. They were down here a month ago or so with a civil rights charge, with the FBI saying our boats were running over illegal immigrants. They watched the tape, and the next day the FBI apologized. They were wrong.

Ron DeSantis has chalked up another policy victory in Florida. The state's Board of Education, which was appointed by the governor, formally moved to ban DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) in all state schools. The new rule was the follow-through on a law DeSantis signed last May which mandated that funding be denied to any state school that has DEI programs. "The rule adopted by the Board defined, for the first time, DEI and affirmatively prohibits FCS institutions from using state or federal funds to administer programs that categorize individuals based on race or sex for the purpose of differential or preferential treatment,"

Washoe County’s capital is Reno, NV. The invocation was provided by the founder of Reno Satanic. On the one hand, the invocation is utterly banal in the sense that most of them are. Sticking an invocation at the beginning of a meeting of government bureaucrats is an anachronism, given that government bureaucracy is about as driven by moral purpose as casinos are. Gov. Abbott spent 2023 unsuccessfully pushing for a voucher program and is now targeting state House Republicans in the March primary who thwarted his agenda. Abbott accepted the $6 million donation — dated Dec. 18 — in a little-used account, suggesting he was setting it aside from funds raised for his reelection campaign. Yass is a billionaire from Pennsylvania who is co-founder and managing director of the Philadelphia-based investment firm Susquehanna International Group.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week that Israel cannot defeat Hamas — that there is no “military solution,” and that Israel will have to accept a Palestinian state. Netanyahu reportedly rejected the idea. NBC News reported Wednesday that Blinken, and Biden, are therefore trying to work around Netanyahu — the democratically-elected leader of Israel — in a departure from the Biden administration’s posture as the supposed defender of democratic ideals: Blinken told Netanyahu that ultimately there is no military solution to Hamas, according to the officials, and that the Israeli leader needs to recognize that or history will repeat itself and violence will continue. 'Diverse historical and contemporary scientists, intellectuals, and chemical discoveries will inform personal reflections and proposals for addressing inequities in chemistry and chemical education,' it read. China used to boast that this would be its century, but will there even be a China at the end of this century? The numbers are not promising. China’s population fell for the second year in a row in 2023, as deaths outpaced births in what was once the world’s most populous country. Chinese authorities see the declining population as an existential threat to its economic future. In 2022, China saw its first population decline since the 1960s, though it still had a population of 1.41175 billion people. China’s population declined for a second consecutive year in 2023, dropping by about 2.08 million to 1.409 billion people, the country’s National Bureau of Statistics announced Wednesday.

Once a “scrappy outsider”, CNN has been slow to respond to the reality of its primary television business shrinking, Thompson said in his memo. “There’s currently too little innovation and risk-taking,” Thompson said in the memo.
