The world's best big wave surfers are descending on California to catch the biggest storm swells the US West Coast has seen in years. Surfers from Brazil, France and Portugal have arrived at Mavericks, a famous wave south of San Francisco, to ride the giant walls of water. Waves up to 70ft (21 meters) have been ridden, as even larger waves pass by. Officials have warned onlookers to stay away from the shore after people were injured by huge rogue waves. Chris Cuvelier, who runs the Maverick Surf Awards competition and can see the rolling swells from his kitchen, told BBC News

The ground shakes...you can hear the waves from miles away. I used to live just north of there, I was out trying it on for size just before christmas in 1994, had heard about it , and had talked to some friends that had ridden it, It was very hard to get to the outside(this was before people started towing out behind jet skis, and long before people started using them to tow into the wave for takeoffs) I had ridden big waves in California, and even bigger waves in Hawaii, but Mavricks is a whole different monster, huge, rough, cold, gnarly, with nearly a mile of 15ft-30ft whitewater between it and the shore...once into the lineup on the outside the ONLY way in is to try to ride it. For the 1st time in my life I was truly SCARED by water. I finally took one...proned it instead of trying to stand up, made it to shore after a severe beating by a dozen subsequent waves. Lost ALL interest in big wave surfing that day. Mark Foo...one of the worlds best surfers was killed there the next day.

Wow, #1, thanks for the first hand sharing about something most of us will never do. I have often wondered what kind of guts it takes to be atop one of those giant waves looking down, down, way way down there and then live through it!

Watch the videos linked in the reports. Amazing, but they need jet skis to get outside in this surf. Impressive riders. I was never a surfer, but did a good bit of body surfing and boogey board surfing north of San Diego with a good friend back 25 or 30 years ago. Black's Beach which has the added attraction of naked women, on top of a good day boogey boarding.

"I have often wondered what kind of guts it takes to be atop one of those giant waves looking down, down, way way down there and then live through it!" Looking down isn't as scary as being down and looking UP! The waves are 3-5 stories tall, weigh as much as a 3-5 story building and are coming at you VERY fast, when they pass under you it is exhilarating, you are just lifted up and over the top..where you then see the next monstrous line coming at you...but then there is one bigger than all the rest, and it begins breaking before it gets to you, even if it doesn't land on you, you can duck dive through it and out the back...it has carried you inshore enough that the next one DOES land right on you. It holds you down while rolling you helplessly around, there are rocks on the bottom the size of cars also rolling around, when on the ragged edge of your last breath you claw back to the surface to gasp another one? A Following Wave is right there breaking down upon you again. In most big wave spots there is open, calmer water around you can get to...at Mavricks there is not, not for a loooong way away from the breaks. And the shore is even further away, very steep or very rocky.

#1...my kid brother used to surf Mavericks at Half Moon Bay/Pillar Point. But he got married and moved to Poughkeepsie, NY. He says he sure misses those really big waves. He claims he wants to be the first to surf the Hudson River but lacks the technique.

With elections on and Joe Biden hovering at around a 40% public approval rating, everyone can see that Joe Biden's starting to get desperate over his polls. Vying for issue number one among voters is an out-of-control open border with illegal immigration now hitting record highs as hundreds of thousands pour in. Cities are going bankrupt with the onslaught. Border Patrol agents are shutting down legitimate trade to "process" migrants. Hospitals are flooded with diseased and injured migrants, and schools are overwhelmed with indigent pupils speaking more than a hundred languages. Instead of change his policies to match what's written in law, Biden has sent his men down to Mexico

The illegal migrant inflow is hitting record highs at Eagle Pass, Texas, and it's out of control at entries across the southern border. Anyone ask what Mexico is doing about it? We know they're trying to keep them from flooding Tijuana by building a border fence in that area. But in that, they aren't stopping the migrants. (Snip) In reality, the Mexicans are helping the migrants cross into the U.S. for the exact same reasons that red border states are busing and flying illegal border crossers into their sanctuary cities of choice. They don't want this problem.

The political class has spent a lot of time obsessing about former President Donald Trump's lead in the Republican early-voting states of Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. There's been less time devoted to how Trump is doing in some bigger states that follow the first three. Michigan holds its primary just three days after South Carolina. It's one of the biggest states on the primary calendar. And now a new poll by the Washington Post and Monmouth University shows that Trump has a 50-point — yes, a 50-point — lead in the Republican race there. The poll showed that 63% of likely Republican primary voters

The director of Disney’s latest flop, The Marvels, Nia DaCosta, is blaming hateful sexist, misogynists for the massive box office failure. What is probably really upsetting Ms. DaCosta is that more men than women bought tickets to the film. Women, like me, are not at all interested in paying for a film starring macho women. No thanks, Disney. Real women like strong men, even fake ones portraying superheroes. The more I read about the antics of the hysterical Karens or view the sickening videos of moronic exhibitionists on TikTok, the more convinced that I am a female chauvinist.

Shakespeare would have had no use for President Joe Biden. If given the opportunity to dramatize his story, the Bard of Avon undoubtedly would have passed. His historical plays and tragedies were certainly partial to political leaders, and Biden has things in common with some of his most famous leading characters -- like Macbeth, he has political ambitions and a helpful spouse, and like King Lear, he has diminished abilities and problematic offspring -- but Shakespeare’s major characters were all deep and complex, prone to wander castle or moor emoting about an inner turmoil or bitter fate. Many Democrats, pointedly its ‘progressive’ left wing, enjoy thinking of themselves as ‘people-person’ trailblazers. This collective and persistent fiction chiefly works because their ‘novel’ efforts cancel out quietly or die in silence, as failures. The brilliant, new ‘initiative’ du jour becomes unworkable—either upon execution or, worse, is frankly untenable for America--eventually. The progressive voice is the loudest and most constant while the majority are barely heard. This progressive public bullying is a problem now owned, if not altogether liked, by the Democrat party; it is rooted in the stupidities of our failed education.

Does the Washington Post have any credibility at all? They censored this cartoon below after a few critics absurdly howled 'racism' -- all for depicting a Hamas spokesman accurately, and creating a thoughtful message that Hamas's howls about civilian attacks are disingenuous, given Hamas's war on Israeli civilians, including the 200-some hostages they hold. upposedly, they complained about the nose, expropriating from the complaints of caricatures directed against Jews done by anti-Semites. Yeah, sure. Did they want a little turned-up button nose on him? And is Ramirez supposed to depict a terrorist spokesman holding hostages flatteringly?

The deepening humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip is driving a wedge between Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley, two of the leading Republican presidential candidates, who deviated sharply on Sunday over whether the United States should help Palestinian refugees from the region ahead of an expected Israeli invasion. Tensions are increasing between President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. According to a new report at Axios, a frustrated Biden hung up on Netanyahu after a dispute about how to handle tax revenues the Israeli government collects for the Palestinian Authority. I wrote earlier this week about a report that Biden allegedly talked Netanyahu out of a "preemptive strike" on Hezbollah that Israel was reportedly planning in the wake of the Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas. That report comes at a time when Biden needs to be seen as more of a competent leader, and Netanyahu shot it down. Now we learn

The 2024 elections hold the potential for a trifecta: winning unified control of the federal government, including all its elected branches, for the first time in eight years. “Could” is the operative word, however. Republicans have an opportunity, but they must capitalize on it to bring their electoral dreams to fruition. The fact that it takes more than good poll numbers and flawed opponents to win in a polarized political climate can itself be summed up in one of the most futile phrases of the past few years: the “red wave.” Just two years ago, Republicans looked to have a chance

Why? Because he supports Israel. The counterattacks have come at the cost of tens of thousands of innocent Palestinian lives. Now, the coalition intends to expand the pressure campaign to all 50 states.
