Hong Kong — An American politician has been arrested in Hong Kong for carrying a gun into the city, according to a charge sheet seen by CNN, in what he has called an “honest mistake.”
Washington state senator Jeff Wilson was arrested on Saturday at Hong Kong International Airport and charged with possession of a firearm without a license, the charge sheet states, an offense punishable by up to 14 years in prison and a fine of more than $12,000.
Wilson appeared in the Sha Tin Magistrates’ Court on Monday and was granted bail, according to public broadcaster RTHK. The Republican state senator, whose full name is Stephen J. Wilson,

How stupid can you be?
And, if he was not a politician, I doubt he'd be getting the same treatment from the authorities there.

Well, he does belong to the stupid party. He might want to find out who packed his bag, or who had access to his bag. Seems like a trick some scum of the earth demoslut might pull.

Yes, pretty dumb. That said, I once almost carried a meat cleaver on a flight. Even worse I was going to NYC on the anniversary on 9-11. Boy, I would have had some explaining to do. Lucky for me, I happened to slip my hand into the outside pocket of briefcase while still in the car at the parking lot.

Any non-military person carrying a gun into a foreign country is nuts.

Extremely stupid move, as #1 has said. I have traveled extensively around the world, and NO PLACE outside of the USA is even remotely free for private citizens to carry guns. In South Africa, you used to be OK to carry concealed handguns after you went through the big paperwork exercise to bring the handgun into the country. I think that has been rescinded since the Communists took over. No other place in the world that I am aware of is going to let foreigners carry a handgun without a HUGE amount of paperwork, at minimum, and most are just "NO! not under any circumstances."

How did he get a gun INTO Hong Kong? I don’t think he could have acquired one there…

It was an unloaded revolver, and it was in his briefcase...carry on. How was it missed prior to departure at the TSA screen line? Was he allowed to bypass the mandatory machines?
I get it , to an extent.
I wear a gun just about as often as I wear shoes...and generally I wear shoes except when actually going into water, or getting into a bed. But I WEAR them, not carry them in a separate bag or case. For a number of years I had a credential to carry on planes, and everywhere else, even earlier it was common to just hand the gun and holster over to the ticket agent, the pilot would keep it in the cockpit, and return it to me after landing, often while still on the plane. I would just deplane last, or nearly last.
As far as foreign countries...at the southern border it required a mere "Gratuity" to cross into mexico with firearms, generally for hunting trips. There was no hassle on the Texas side coming back .While sailing, and entering/exiting many countries they would be surrendered to the Port Captain on arrival, and retrieved when filing exit papers prior to departure.(or secreted aboard if the majority of my stay was going to be in remote locales) I actually threw some overboard before returning to the US mainland because they had been purchased in central america for personal/ship defense and weren't "The kind of things" California allowed.
Though not long after 9/11 I was leaving upstate NY for the midwest after an extended dog training summer/ Fall hunting season, and had over a dozen guns of various types, though mainly shotguns...80/90 was under construction with major delays and I made a spur of the moment decision to just cross into canada at Buffalo, follow their nice clear clean low traffic highway west to windsor and cross back over in Detroit...when arriving they merely asked about citizenship and reason for the visit, I told them I was just by passing the hwy construction, would be driving straight through, exiting to Detroit..they didn't ask any other questions, just welcomed me and waved me through. It wasn't until I was a couple of hundred miles along that I heard on the canadian radio that there were delays at the US border and all vehicles being searched that it dawned on me there "Might" be an issue with having guns, let alone a lot of them and trying to get back into the USA(home of the free). Luckily when arriving at Detroit, again they only asked if I was a citizen, how long I had been in Canada(approx 6 hrs), was I bringing any fruits/vegetables/agri products back?(no) Did I make any Purchases while there?(only fuel and snacks)...and they waved me right in.

How did the crack TSA team in San Fransisco miss this. They are the ones who should be fired.

Sam Kinison told a joke (which might not have been a joke) about a vindictive girlfriend packing a gun into his luggage, knowing he would get in trouble at the airport. Either that happened here, or Mr. Wilson is a particularly stupid member of the Stupid Party. So the second replier is correct. I cannot imagine why anyone would carry a gun overseas, unless he's a Navy SEAL on active duty. And he wouldn't be flying commercial anyway.

"Honest mistake"? Bunk! In this day and age, who brings a gun to the airport??
I see stories in my local paper maybe four times a year about some idiot who gets caught with a gun at security. They make me cringe, frighten me.
