Chicago teachers’ union boss grilled

A Chicago teachers’ union boss stepped in it Tuesday during a CNN interview where she was grilled on hypocritically putting her son in a private school after calling school choice racist. You’ve likened in the past private schools of today to quote ‘segregation academies’ of the Jim Crow South,” CNN host Abby Phillip surprisingly told Chicago Teachers’ Union President Stacy Davis Gates. “Why then send your child to a private school after speaking out so publicly against them?” /snip/ she attempted to parse her words, asserting that she criticized school choice, not private schools. Which is a distinction without a difference.

Comments:

Saying one thing and doing another? Must be a lib Democrat.
Note that her 2 other children attend public school to retain her bona fides.

Maybe this is something she could have said: As a union boss, i make a lot of money, and I'm not about to send my child to the X-hole schools in this City. My job is to help the teachers obtain higher pay, benefits and pensions, not be concerned about the actual quality of education being provided.

She's the boss of the Teacher's Union not the Student Union. I would never expect her to care about the students. The Teacher's Union boss is the last place one should go to ask how to improve the schools.

Knew someone that was home schooling her son. She met with a number of public school teachers and was quite surprised to discover many of them were home schooling their own children as well. It's quite a statement when public school teachers have no confidence in their own school system.

Of course school choice is racist. My fondest dream is to sit in a classroom with a bunch of hooting monkeys who would rather do stunts atop the desks and keep the class entertained than learn how to do math or speak English.

Worse still...it is a CATHOLIC School, where the nuns don't get Union Wages, dress codes are "conservative", Abortion is seriously and actively "Frowned upon"(as in it's a mortal sin), twerking gets a swat on the offending appendage, and there are ONLY TWO sexes, thus ONLY TWO genders. Oh yeah...and there are Religious symbols EVERYWHERE, but nary a rainbow flag!

Jim Crow, Jim Schmo. Chicago is corrupt and so is Stacey Davis-Gates who earns >150K/year and probably a lot more through graft. According to WBEZ (NPR - Chicago) in 2020 the cost per student in Chicago Public schools was $17.8K. In 2013 it was $13.2K. In 2023 it is $29.4/student. Enrollment has dropped 11.7% since 2020. How do Catholic schools compare? I don’t know which school Ms. Gates sends her child to but as a comparison De LaSalle Institute, a Catholic high school on the south side of Chicago (Bronzeville, which is traditionally an African-American neighborhood) has a yearly tuition of $18K and 88% of graduates go on to four year colleges including schools like Cornell, U. of Illinois and U. Of Iowa and an additional 11% go to two year schools or trade schools. In Chicago Public Schools the number of graduates going to postsecondary schools is 60.1% according to Illinoispolicy.org. The Chicago branch of the American Federation of Teachers for which our Stacey works isn’t exactly doing a bang-up job but WTH? Her kids can always opt out. And tough luck to the other kids in her community.

Radical climate activist Greta Thunberg has reportedly been arrested and charged with disobeying the police for the second time in less than two months. Thunberg, 20, originally participated in a climate protest in the southern city of Malmo on June 19th. “The climate crisis is a matter of life and death for countless people. A month later, she was “fined 1,500 Swedish crowns ($134) by a Swedish court on July 24 for failing to leave [the] protest when ordered by police,” according to Reuters.

Johnson claimed his administration is “committed to advancing innovative, whole-of-government approaches to address these inequities.”

The reputation of “politician” precedes any civil servant, so right off the bat, I hold a less-than-flattering bias against those entering government (to put it mildly); it’s a “guilty until proven innocent” prejudice, but I will say, it’s evenly applied. Then last week, Michelle Wu, Boston’s hardcore leftist mayor, opened her big mouth and showed (again) just how right on the money one can be when you operate under the assumption that ineptitude and uselessness are shared traits amongst elected officials. On September 7th, Wu declared a “heat emergency” saying temperatures were expected to reach into the… ready for this? The nineties.

The order effectively banned carrying guns for 30 days in Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, using the excuse of a public health emergency in a blatantly unconstitutional move. Advertisement She probably thought that she would get votes with this, showing that she was "doing something" to deal with "gun violence." As she admitted in her press conference on the matter, she didn't even think this would stop criminals from committing gun crimes; it was about sending a "message," she said.
