This is not a news article but a list/recommendation of several excellent books. I have read Isaac's Storm - will read it again, it's that good. This post may not stay up - do copy off the list as I have done.

Ive heard about the Great Storm of 1900 all my life, living as I do not but 50-60 miles from Galveston. That storm is the reason why there is a sea wall, although the way the businesses have now turned it into a tourist set and allowed the space between the jetties to get built up with sand so people can lay out in the sun. In fact the east end of the Seawall is now a mere 'curb' one steps off to get to Stewart beach. I dont understand why theyve allowed this: it feels like another Great Storm disaster in the making somewhere down the line. Galveston has been doing massive things to bring more tourists to town with the ports now standing as cruise line ports, but its starting to lose some of its charm. I really worry about the sublimation of that sea wall...

In a third major reshuffling, 2024 hopeful Ron Desantis has replaced his campaign manager Generra Peck amid a lukewarm campaign performance and threats by donors to cut off funding. James Uthmeier, who served as chief of staff in Mr. DeSantis’ governor’s office, will be taking over, according to the announcement Tuesday. Ms. Peck will handle the duties of chief strategist moving forward. “James Uthmeier has been one of Governor DeSantis’ top advisors for years and he is needed where it matters most:

President Joe Biden’s administration concedes that there is no scientific evidence to support an apparent recommendation to receive as many as six COVID-19 booster shots in a year. After Health Secretary Xavier Becerra, a Biden appointee, wrote in a social media post on Nov. 29, 2022, that people should get vaccinated “if it’s been over 2 months since your last dose,” the Functional Government Initiative (FGI) filed a Freedom of Information Act request for documents supporting the statements. The watchdog organization then sued after the administration didn’t comply with timelines laid out in the law. FGI asked for, among other documents: “Any scientific support relied on by Secretary Becerra when approving or issuing

Florida District Judge Aileen Cannon denied a DOJ request to keep evidence sealed in the Mar-a-Lago documents case against President Donald J Trump. Additionally, Cannon has demanded that Special Counsel Jack Smith explain why he is using an out of district grand jury to construct additional charges against the defendant. [2-page ruling pdf here] Cannon has presided over the document issues even before the indictment against Donald Trump was unsealed. As a result, she has a good frame of reference for the Lawfare tactics the Special Counsel is attempting to deploy. (Image-order)

Former President Donald Trump’s attorney said Sunday that he welcomes former Vice President Mike Pence’s testimony and expects it could be key in proving Mr. Trump’s innocence in a case over whether the former president committed crimes in connection with efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 election. Attorney John Lauro said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that Mr. Trump’s defense team believes Mr. Pence’s court testimony could be crucial in exonerating the former president of any wrongdoing in the so-called Jan. 6 case.

The story about the chef’s death changed more often than the days of the week. The Obamas weren’t there, then they were. The daughters may or may not have been there. Ginormous toxic hammerhead worms - which can grow up to 15 inches - have invaded DC backyards as the slithering creatures shock residents and have scientists warning about getting too close. Americans are being advised to avoid touching the foot-long flatworms, which feast on slugs, snails and earthworms by paralyzing them with the same potent neurotoxin found in deadly puffer fish. Punchbowl News reported the Ukraine aid battle will resume when Congress returns from recess. The incoming request, which could be “north of $10 billion,” follows as Ukraine continues its slow-moving counteroffensive against Russia, and America and other NATO countries have pledged support for Ukraine. The Army’s acquisition chief told reporters on Monday that the Department of Defense was working on a funding package for lawmakers to consider. The package would be used to replenish American weapon stockpiles which have been depleted after providing munitions to Ukraine’s protracted conflict with Russia.
