The mayor of one of Ecuador’s main Pacific ports was assassinated a month ahead of presidential elections as skyrocketing crime overwhelms the authorities, making the formerly peaceful nation as violent as Mexico and Colombia. The mayor of Manta, Agustin Intriago, 38, was gunned down during a public event on Sunday, in the second deadly attack on a politician in a week. A woman also lost her life in the attack, while two of the attackers were wounded and are in custody in a hospital, according to Interior Minister Juan Zapata.

Comments:

The world is going to hell for your pleasure. Stop Using Smuggled Cocaine. Murder blood rape mayhem it is really and truly your fault

We need to stop pretending that the narco wars are "a police matter", and start using the military. Locate a major drug overlord, say in Mexico, and like in "Clear and Present Danger", the Clancy novel....take them out. Locate a fentanyl factory in some country....ANY country....and level it with a few cruise missiles. This "we'll use police, and only in our country" is a loser approach. They are literally destroying the world. Kill them.

This is sad and yet another set back for Ecuador who I know has been trying very hard to stem drug violence. Just as in Mexico, being a good guy gets you dead. The problem with the military "war" option is that we would have to use our military openly in other countries (not that we aren't to some degree already using them covertly and have been for half a century).... is that a precedent you want to perpetuate? Do you want Russian or Chinese forces operating without prior expressed consent on US soil like bounty hunters arresting or even eliminating US citizens? I don't. I am all for eliminating this "clear and present danger" with unlimited force with the consent of the governments of those countries but the geopolitical repercussions of unilateral open force, MOST ESPECIALLY when those governments are active participants in the production and distribution of the drugs as we know China is with fentanyl, could mean WWIII. In the end the only solution to drugs is Darwinian. Our government is too lax and too kind.

Re #2, did I say I wanted Russian bounty hunters in the USA? I did not, and that has literally nothing to do with dropping a cruise missile on a drug kingpin or drug factory.

#1.. I was simply pointing out that maybe those in favor of unilateral military action on foreign soil might think differently were it to happen right here in the US. When Russia drops a cruise missile on US soil even to murder an accused drug kingpin or human trafficer or you name it? How does that differ from us dropping bombs on foreign soil without the consent of the local sovereign governing powers? People went apoplectic, and rightfully so, when China sent some "weather balloons" over our nation. Imagine a cruise missile.

You might have noticed a media narrative taking shape the last few days about how Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ presidential campaign has “stalled.” [...] Perhaps what we’re seeing is less about him and still less about 2024 or the upcoming GOP primary scrum, and more about what happened in 2020. Put bluntly, maybe what we’re seeing now is an early sign that what Democrats, Big Tech, and corporate media did in 2020 was inject poison into our political system, and the 2024 election cycle is going to show us just how deadly that poison is.

For a casual observer of Chile, the election result might have come as a shock. A country that just a year ago seemed to be undergoing a progressive transformation, with a tattooed, thirty-something president taking office and an expansive new Constitution apparently on the way, now seems to be lurching in the opposite direction. ... While reasons vary somewhat by country, the insatiable appetite for drugs in both traditional consumer markets like Europe and the U.S., and increasingly within the region itself, is an obvious common thread.

Romney issued his call in a Wall Street Journal op-ed published Monday. He said that the donor class needs to pressure candidates with no path to drop out by February of next year at the very latest.“Despite Donald Trump’s apparent inevitability, a baker’s dozen Republicans are hoping to become the party’s 2024 nominee for president,” he wrote. “That is possible for any of them if the field narrows to a two-person race before Mr. Trump has the nomination sewn up.”

A majority of Americans - and an overwhelming number of Democrats - no longer support First Amendment protections for free speech. The government should restrict “false” information online, even if doing so blocks people from “publishing or accessing information,” 55 percent of Americans said in a large poll released Thursday. Only 42 percent disagreed. The antipathy to free speech represents a sea change in attitudes in just five years. It is driven by a powerful new hostility to First Amendment rights on the left. In an identically worded poll five years ago, Democrats and Republicans favored free speech online by roughly 3 to 2 margins. Today
