State Farm will no longer take new homeowner insurance applications in California, a move the state government is blaming on climate change. The insurance company cited the high cost of construction in the state and the growing threat of catastrophes including wildfires in its Friday announcement. The California Department of Insurance (CDI) told Axios climate change was driving the issue, making it beyond the state’s control.

If your mindset is that the issue is beyond state control, then the issue will continue. If the issue is broken down into its contributive parts…then there are steps that state could take….such as reducing the risk of wildfires; removing restrictive barriers to housing construction, esp. for housing that construction folks can afford; reducing fees and delays in reconstruction projects; incentivizing reinsurance competition for state insurers ( that the covid risk is gone))

California doesn’t blame it on “climate change”. The California Department of Insurance is. And interestingly enough, they are telling that to left-wing Axios.

It must be nice to be a democrat, nothing is ever your fault. It is either climate change, systemic racism, insufficient funding (taxes too low), or Trump’s fault.

So, we have an elected Insurance Commissioner here in CA (yes - like every other statewide elected officeholder, he's a democrat) whose job it is to protect consumers and all he can do is chalk it up to climate change. Must be hoping for a Cabinet position under President Brylcreem.

The reason they are not insuring new homes is that the plunder and terrorisms that is going on can not be forecast into their actuarial tables. After all, they are in business not a charity. Californians had better get their sill act together and cleanup their state.

State Farm is already long gone from Florida, refusing to insure coastal real estate, even for extortionate rates (which is what it costs now from other companies). During voir dire on a civil case at the courthouse my closest friend once got excluded from jury duty--his intention--by telling one of the attorneys, "State Farm don't pay." He was immediately dismissed.

I doubt that "claimate change" is a factor in State Farm's calculation of actuarial tables, or in any other insurance company. California Insurance Department lives in fantasyland.

So, State Farm won't write a policy on a house in a subdivision far from the nearest forest with a metal fireproof roof and a fire hydrant in front. There should be an opening for another company.

Becerra in 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a California law requiring the pregnancy centers to post information about where to obtain abortions.
