Major automakers are removing AM radios from their new models in a move that heralds the end of an era, sparking outrage from listeners, station owners, and politicians alike who lament the potential loss of an iconic part of American culture and criticize the move as “tone deaf.” Mark Levin commented on the change, saying: “The automobile is essential to liberty. It’s freedom. So the control of the automobile is about the control of your freedom. They finally figured out how to attack conservative talk radio.”
The Washington Post reports that in a move that marks the end of an era, major automakers are disconnecting AM radios from their new models.

One can still have a small portable radio in the car. Quite frankly, since Rush has been gone, I haven't even turned on my AM radio.

Having an AM channel on a car radio adds only pennies to the manufacturing costs. But the claims that an AM 'receiver' interferes with car electronics is a bald-faced LIE.

It won't be a problem for long; pretty soon all the cars will be gone.

Ironically, all the AM stations that I can receive in my home region have dropped conservative talk radio, and gone to 'elevator' music, Mexican music, rap / hip-hop, or country music. the only station I can get Levin and his cohorts on is FM.

I listen to AM talk radio for many hours each and every day, both in the car and house. I absolutely love it and we are fortunate to have many great conservatives with shows there. This "problem" is an invented cover for an insidious agenda, as #2 points out. I'm sick and tired of the evil overlords who are obsessed with control, power, and ill-gotten wealth.

When real cars are outlawed and only crap EVs are sold, what difference does it make what their manufacturers include?
And phone apps + bluetooth connection can bring almost any broadcast content through our car's audio system, anyway.

Most radios have USB or WiFi inputs. An AM receiver that outputs to those is easy to mass produce. It should be about 10-30 dollars. If it's not already being produced it will be.

I just stream what I want on my phone. Haven't even listened to FM radio either for years. Most AM signals have so much static and interference around here, they are unlistenable anyway.

AM started to die when FM stereo became common. Talk radio has prolonged its life by a couple decades, but it was a foregone conclusion. FM has vastly superior sound quality, at the expense of distance. I still listen to AM when camping or away from other electrical interference, as there is a station a few states away I like. Even so it fades in and out and lightning sparks it.
In the car I listen almost exclusively to satellite. FM occasionally when I want local news and weather. AM never. Its in the category of short wave nowadays.

As mentioned above herein, most AM stations have a lot of static, but what is even worse are the endless commercials on both AM and FM stations. Nowadays, conservative view points can readily be found on daily podcasts from phone apps like Spotify. My 15 year old car does not have Bluetooth but it does have an AUX plug to hook up my phone. At the moment I am really enjoying Megyn Kelly's daily 90 minute podcast. She pulls no punches.

Keep AM radio and get rid of all that other "Mommy-Govt" crud such as: Engine shut-off at stoplights. Messages on dashboard to be careful, it may be icy -- or that you're driving too closely ---- or be sure and check the back seat before you exit., etc. Just let me drive.

AM (Amplitude Modulation) is impacted by electrical interference, which can cause static that completely drowns out the broadcast signal. Electrical transmission lines and electric motors are the worst offenders. EV cars are basically made up of electrical transmission lines and electrical motors, so I'm sure the automobile industry's move to EV cars is a driving reason for dropping AM radios -- they won't have to try to figure out how to shield the radio from the interference created by the car itself. If they don't put them in the EVs, it would follow in their reasoning to eliminate them from the new internal combustion engine cars as well.

Selected podcasts are the way I've gone. When in the car you can stream them to your audio system, and same in house.

the average car on the road is 12 years old. This won't matter for a long time.
AND look for the new cars, which have bluetooth and USB inputs, to be a great market for linkable or plug-in-abled AM radios.

They're not saying the radio interferes with the electronics.
It's the electronics that interfere with AM reception.
AM has always had problems with handling electrical noise, but there are measures that can be taken to prevent it.

Don't really have a stake in this, but so many of these 'concerned citizens' and 'activists' harassing corporate America to do things are turning out to be tied to our totalitarian government.

''come back Bernie she kept saying...BLETCH.

Almost all cars today allow a smart phone connection. Just download to your phone the stations you want to listen to and play them off the internet. If you have two cars with SiriusXM, cancel one and use the SiriusXM app from the other to return it to the second one. More than one way to skin a cat.

FWIW: I suspect the carmakers want to get rid of the cost of the AM antenna rather than the cost of the AM tuning. Routing the antenna through the car's body has to slightly affect body design.
Caveat: It has been decades since I did any radio work so my observation may be totally dated.

I remember when I was active-duty Navy and had a second job. It was the year 2002 and I was a heavy AM Talk radio listener. From the morning radio host who is a libertarian, to The Minister of the Church of the Painful Truth Neal Boortz, to the Great Maha Rushie, to the Black Avenger Ken Hamblin, to Dr. Michael Savage and then Laura Ingraham. It was a great time to listen. Now we have guys on like Brian Kilmeade, Clay Travis, Buck Sexton and Sean Hannity. Not worth listening too. Thankfully my car has not only AM radio but is Bluetooth capable with USB and AUX ports. Talk radio apps on a smart phone plus videos sites like Rumble come in handy. Plus, the family vehicle has Sirius XM radio that has not only Conservative talk but an 80s music station. What's not to love.

I have a 2006 4 runner that has an Auxiliary plug in that I plug my iPhone in to. I listen to one am station through "TUNEIN" application with Markley, Van Camp and Robins in the morning. (they also do a daily Podcast). For all others I listen to their Podcasts Using "Overcast" on my phone. I either listen through my auxiliary plug in the 4 Runner or through bluetooth headphones. Never really listen any more to the actual am stations anymore anyway. Podcasts are so much better. Don't have to listen to the Woke newscasts on the hour and half hour.
