Egypt has accused Netflix of misrepresenting history by casting a Black woman to play Cleopatra, its most famous historical figure, in a new series. “Queen Cleopatra,” which is released May 10, features Adele James in the lead role, a casting decision that the streaming giant says is “a nod to the centuries-long conversation about the ruler’s race” but which officials in Cairo have dismissed as “blatant historical fallacy.” The government statement issued Thursday marked an escalation in a feud that has sparked demands for the show's cancellation, amid a broader debate over representation in popular culture. The eight-episode docu-drama is

Protesters smeared black and red paint on the case and pedestal of Edgar Degas’s “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen” sculpture at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. on Thursday to bring attention to the climate crisis and demand that President Biden declare a climate emergency. The protesters — a man and a woman, dressed in black suits — slathered their hands, then crouched down to paint the pedestal on which the ballerina sculpture is displayed. They then stood up and smeared their hands across the clear case protecting the artwork. Police removed the two people in handcuffs and ushered out

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland is about to be one of the first cities in the U.S. with blocks dedicated as a zero-emission delivery zone, thanks to a $2 million grant the city received. The Portland Bureau of Transportation announced Tuesday that the money will support creating a 16-block area in downtown where all deliveries must be made using zero-emission vehicles. These vehicles can include electric vans and trucks, cargo bikes or hydrogen-fueled vehicles. The goal is to reduce traffic from heavy trucks in the downtown area. According to PBOT, the pilot program of the zero-emission delivery zone will be located near

I love my electric car. I really do. I love how I never have to buy gas. I love how it glides quietly up the street. I love that it has so much pickup that I can easily blow past gas-powered muscle cars if I want to. I love having stickers that allow me to drive solo in the HOV lanes. I love that routine maintenance consists of little more than rotating the tires. But after three years, I am thinking seriously of trading it in for the gas-powered hybrid plug-in version. Why? Because as much as I love my

Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Sunday after a years-long decline in sales doomed the home goods retailer. In a statement on Sunday, the company said its Bed Bath & Beyond and buybuy BABY stores will remain open "as the Company begins its efforts to effectuate the closure of its retail locations." Sixth Street will provide the company with $240 million in debtor-in-possession financing, which will allow the company to continue operations during its wind-down process. When Ryan Shanahan, 41, decided to buy a house in Portland, Oregon, he knew from the start that he wanted his future home to be "net zero." To be net zero is to cut greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible, with any remaining emissions reabsorbed from the atmosphere, by oceans and forests, for instance, according to the United Nations. "My mantra is that the future is efficient, electric, and renewable," Shanahan tells CNBC Make It. He is a zero-energy retrofits manager at Birdsmouth, a zero-energy housing company. He advises clients on how to convert their existing

Sen. John Fetterman, D-Penn., on Thursday tweeted out a photo acknowledging 4/20, an unofficial holiday dedicated to smoking and celebrating marijuana. In the photo, the hoody-wearing senator is holding up a flag bearing the phrase, "It’s 420 somewhere." The "420" appears to resemble a marijuana joint. Marijuana leaves are scattered throughout the flag. (Snip) "You know what goes great with some weed? A Union," Fetterman wrote in response to a story about marijuana dispensary workers seeking to unionize. The origins of the 420 holiday are unknown, but many believe it originated in California in the 1970s when teenagers would ritualistically

Former first lady Michelle Obama revealed that she was not invited to the White House for the hanging of her official portrait, in a veiled swipe at former President Donald Trump. When asked whether she had returned to the White House, Michelle Obama said that "wasn’t invited" during an interview with late night show host Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday. (Snip) This is not the first time that Michelle Obama has targeted Trump, writing in her 2022 memoir, "The Light We Carry," that she felt shaken and hurt by his victory in the 2016 election. "It shook me profoundly to hear

Gov. Gavin Newsom promised two years ago to appoint a Black woman to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein if she resigned. If he merely appointed a temporary “caretaker” would that honor his pledge? I wouldn’t think so. It wouldn’t be in keeping with the spirit of his promise. The governor seemed to be swearing that if given the opportunity, he would fill a glaring Senate void and make sure there was at least one Black woman member of America’s most prestigious and powerful legislative body. She’d be a full-fledged senator, not a temp. She would follow in the footsteps of California’s

Some 41 percent of U.S. adults would not buy an electric car, according to an April 12 Gallup poll of a random sample of 1,009 people. This, if extrapolated to the wider population, would represent around 106 million Americans who are against a key plank of Joe Biden's vision of a green economy. While this comprises a sizeable minority, the survey, conducted between March 1-23, found that a majority of 55 percent either currently own or were considering owning an electric vehicle (EV). Those against buying an EV tended to be older, and 71 percent of those who identified as

American employers may need to fork out even bigger bucks to lure in workers. Employees' wage expectations have risen to a new high of $75,811 a year, according to the New York Fed's SCE Labor Market Survey in March. The reservation wage, or the lowest wage that someone would accept for a new role, is almost $2,100 higher than it was in November when the survey was last conducted, at which point the wage was $73,667. The survey asked respondents about the lowest wage or salary they would accept before taxes and other deductions if they were offered a job

At least three Republican senators have said they will not support a move to temporarily replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., on the Senate Judiciary Committee -- saying they wouldn't want to help Democrats advance President Joe Biden's agenda. On Monday afternoon, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who sits on the committee, became the most recent Republican to voice his opposition to temporarily replacing Feinstein while she recovers at home from having shingles, signaling an uphill battle Senate Democrats face in securing a replacement. "Never, not once, have we allowed temporary substitutes on committees, and now is not the time to start. Republicans
