The Unfortunate Partisanship of the Prosecutor’s Office

The indictment of Donald Trump in New York City has been portrayed as everything from the beginning of long-awaited accountability for the former president to a partisan effort to interfere in the 2024 election. Pundits have dissected it from every possible legal and political angle. Much of this commentary has been predictable, which is to say that for the most part liberal Democrats have defended it while conservative Republicans have decried it. From the standpoint of a political independent, however, what emerges from all this impassioned discourse is a more sober conclusion: Prosecutors should not carry partisan labels. We didn’t really need a Trump indictment to assert that point. There’s never

In New York City, if the newcomers aren't put up at the luxury cruise terminal that served the QE2, they could get $700-a-night midtown hotel accommodations with iconic Manhattan views. In Chicago, they found themselves whisked to suburban lodgings. In Denver, officials refer to them discreetly as “guests” and you needn’t bother inquiring about their inns or addresses. The people enjoying these free digs aren’t privacy-conscious jet-setters, but the secrecy surrounding them might be comparable: They’re some of the millions of migrants who have illegally crossed into the U.S. since the Biden administration relaxed most border controls.  No one knows exactly how many people have poured across

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has laid out the devastating results of runaway government spending on the middle class and why it’s so important to claw back lost ground for the average American, who has “received a pay cut for 24 consecutive months … as inflation has persisted.” He also noted the average American family has lost the equivalent of more than $7,000 in annual income. There is a direct link between spending, borrowing and printing trillions of dollars, and these disastrous results for Americans. President Biden has spent trillions of dollars the nation didn’t have. These unchecked costs drove the deficit to record highs and pushed the debt over $31 trillion.

New York Times opinionista Michelle Goldberg complained bitterly this week that she had trekked all the way to Wilmington, Del., at the brutal hour of 7 a.m. to watch the Dominion-vs.-Fox News defamation trial, only for the parties to settle before the show began. “Deeply disappointing” was her reaction. But here’s a thought. All the disappointed media operatives huddled at Wilmington’s Superior Court, like Goldberg and CNN’s crestfallen Oliver Darcy, could make themselves useful in the president’s hometown. They could investigate a story that is bigger than Watergate but which they have shamefully avoided or downplayed for almost three years: Biden family corruption and the associated coverup

Nashville Controversy Reveals Liberals'

In the last two years, the defense of democracy has been central to the Democratic Party's attempt to portray itself as the last line of defense against Republicans' alleged authoritarianism. But as recent events in Nashville showed, Democrats' alleged fealty to democracy and abhorrence for agitators and mobs seeking to disrupt the legislative branch of government is more a matter of situational ethics than actual principle. As the career of a new Democratic idol, Tennessee State Rep. Justin Jones, demonstrates, they're only against anti-democratic rioters when they're seeking to silence Republicans. Jones became a national celebrity when, along with two other Democrats—Reps. Justin Pearson and Gloria Johnson—he disrupted

An IRS Criminal Supervisory Agent seeking whistleblower protection claims the investigation into Hunter Biden is being mishandled by the Biden administration. In a letter dated April 19, 2023, attorney Mark D. Lytle of the Washington, D.C.-based law firm Nixon Peabody LLP tells members of the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate that his client has been overseeing the "ongoing and sensitive investigation of a high-profile, controversial subject since early 2020 and would like to make protected whistleblower disclosures to Congress."

A confession: When House Republicans announced plans for a New York hearing to showcase rampant crime, I didn’t need to curb my enthusiasm. I assumed the worst, that the hearing would bring New Yorkers bad news they already know and that Democrats and their media shills would dismiss the event as theater designed to embarrass Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. I was right. The hearing, partly because of its timing, smelled like payback for Bragg’s flimsy indictment of Donald Trump, giving Dems and the media the ammunition to repeatedly ridicule it as a partisan dog and pony show. But I was also wrong in a major way: I underestimated how clueless

2024 presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy angered "CNN This Morning" host Don Lemon during a debate on gun rights for Black Americans while on-air. In the heated exchange, Lemon took offense to Ramaswamy’s recent statements at an NRA conference last week about Democrats in the south instituting gun laws to prevent African Americans from protecting their newfound rights in the post-Civil War era. Lemon reduced Ramaswamy’s point to a declaration that the Civil War was fought merely to give Black people gun rights and berated him for it, telling him the statement "insulted" him as a Black American.

With GOP House members saying their probe of the Biden family’s financial dealings has now spread to nine family members, it appears that troubled son Hunter’s entanglements may only be the beginning of the investigation. The question now is whether the House Oversight Committee will expose anything that rises to a level that would interest Department of Justice criminal investigators, or if their probe will just shine light on a world of access, favors, and self-dealing that while unsavory is probably not illegal. The committee’s chairman, Representative James Comer, disclosed that “six additional members” of the president’s family “may have benefited” from deals that could pose a “national security threat.”

Clarence Thomas is an unconquered American. He refused to let the segregation and poverty into which he was born define his life. He wouldn’t let racists impose limits on him. He also wouldn’t let leftists claim ownership of his mind or allegiance simply because they opposed segregation. They were enemies of freedom, too, only from another direction. Liberals have never forgiven him for refusing their patronage and their leash. They knew they could not count on him to support their view of abortion rights when George H.W. Bush nominated him to the Supreme Court in 1991. So they tried to stop his confirmation at any cost, using sexual allegations against him when questions

It is perhaps no surprise that Emmanuel Macron is in the middle of another big international row. France’s president likes to stir things up. It is his penchant, his trademark foible. Re-elected in 2022 despite a disappointing first term, he has four years left to make a difference. After that, political oblivion beckons – and Macron will still be under 50 in April 2027. Maybe this ticking clock helps explain why he courts danger like a bare-chested surfer riding the waves on the beach at Biarritz. At home, Macron has caused uproar in recent months by pushing through controversial pension reforms opposed by two-thirds of the population.

But all food is not created equal. The vast majority of food that is contributing to our emission crises lies in meat and dairy products,” Adams said.“According to new data released by the city, 20% of the Big Apple’s greenhouse gas emissions come from food production and consumption.

Dr Phil on Tuesday warned an economics professor's plan for $350,000 in reparations to 40 million descendants of slaves would be 'an absolute disaster', arguing that giving a lump sum was not the best way to help anyone. The television host on Tuesday invited on his show Duke University's William Darity, who co-authored the book 'From Here to Equality: Reparations for Black Americans in the Twenty-First Century'. Darity suggested the US government issue the funds in much the same way it sent out checks to millions of Americans during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, at a cost of $14 trillion.

An unknown number of American citizens remain trapped in Sudan, and it may already be too late to get them out. The civil war in Sudan between two wanna-be warlords reached the capital of Khartoum almost a week ago, and yet no one apparently had thought to extract US diplomatic personnel and private citizens from the country. The embassy sent out an alert that it’s already too late for any normal exit: The airport, located in central Khartoum, is closed but would be inoperable even if it reopened due to damage from bombardment and fighting. The roughly 70 U.S. staff at the embassy have no options to leave Sudan on their own

Gov. Gavin Newsom promised two years ago to appoint a Black woman to replace Sen. Dianne Feinstein if she resigned. If he merely appointed a temporary “caretaker” would that honor his pledge? I wouldn’t think so. It wouldn’t be in keeping with the spirit of his promise. The governor seemed to be swearing that if given the opportunity, he would fill a glaring Senate void and make sure there was at least one Black woman member of America’s most prestigious and powerful legislative body. She’d be a full-fledged senator, not a temp. She would follow in the footsteps of California’s
