Whole Foods opened its 64,000+ square foot “flagship” store in downtown San Francisco in March of 2022. On Monday, the grocery giant announced it was shuttering that location — at least for now. “We are closing our Trinity location only for the time being,” a Whole Foods spokesperson said in a statement. “If we feel we can ensure the safety of our team members in the store, we will evaluate a reopening of our Trinity location.” A City Hall source told The Standard the company cited deteriorating street conditions around drug use and crime near the grocery store as a reason for its closure. Pro-criminal prosecutors and City Hall have hung San Franciscans out to dry. As one who is in the city a good bit, a common phrase I've heard is criminal tourists. Thieves come into San Francisco to steal because they know they will get a slap on the wrist.

It is unsafe for Whole Foods workers, either in the store, going to work, or leaving. It is also dangerous for customers. This is not just in San Francisco, but Chicago, Austin, Portland, Seattle, etc. Chicago's "Magnificent Mile" isn't magnificent anymore. It's sad.

Why the U.S. didn’t notice leaked documents

A trove of leaked Pentagon documents were circulating online for months without being discovered by the U.S. government — raising questions about how the administration missed them. Images of the classified documents that circulated on social media in recent days were posted to a popular messaging website as far back as January. But they appear to have only caught the government’s attention around the time they were first reported in the media in early April. “No one in the U.S. government knew they were out there,” one U.S. official said. As to why they didn’t: “We cannot answer that just yet,”

Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina launched an exploratory committee for a 2024 presidential campaign on Wednesday, taking a major step toward a Republican primary arena that former President Donald Trump has dominated so far. "This is personal to me," Scott, 57, said in a video announcing the committee. "I will never back down in defense of the conservative values that makes America exceptional. And that's why I'm announcing my exploratory committee for president of the United States." Scott's move toward a White House run puts him on track to collide with fellow South Carolina Republican Nikki Haley, the former governor and United Nations ambassador who launched

You’re not going to have more goods and services produced immediately that can sop up that money.” Co-host Joe Kernen asked, “What I was trying to figure out, Warren, is, in your long life, where you’ve seen a lot of different business cycles and you’ve seen hyperinflation and you’ve seen secular disinflation last forever,

We keep seeing Joe Biden deteriorating right in front of us. He wasn’t a shining light to start with, even years ago, but he just keeps getting worse. That became readily apparent in Northern Ireland on Wednesday. Confusion and disaster seem to follow him wherever he goes, and it permeates the operations of all his people as well. Biden is visiting the country to commemorate the Good Friday Agreement — a peace deal that the U.S. was instrumental in helping to broker. Biden brought along his son, Hunter, who has been under investigation for years regarding Biden family foreign business dealings. Is that a vacation and are they reimbursing the government for that?

I’ve written about Bryan Griffin before, and no doubt I will again. Griffin is the quarterback of DeSantis’ media team as his press secretary, having taken over from one of my heroes, Christina Pushaw. Pushaw works the outside game now doing rapid response, and Griffin the inside, having to deal with the media on a day-to-day basis. As the media point person within the Governor’s team he gets all sorts of ridiculous media requests, and what’s great about his approach is that he provides the rest of the world with a front-seat view of how the media treats politicians it wants to destroy. He doesn’t just describe his interactions.

The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday sketched a bleak picture of what’s in store for the global economy, estimating that growth will slow more than expected this year. The IMF said the “anemic outlook” reflects the higher interest rates needed to bring down persistent inflation, the deterioration of financial conditions amid banking turmoil, the war in Ukraine and growing geoeconomic fragmentation. “Below the surface ... turbulence is building, and the situation is quite fragile, as the recent bout of banking instability reminded us,” IMF director of research Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas said in the opening to the institution’s World Economic Outlook. President Joe Biden signed legislation Monday to end the national emergency for Covid-19, the White House said, in a move that will not affect the end of the separate public health emergency scheduled for May 11. The bill to end the national emergency cleared the Senate last month in a bipartisan 68-23 vote and passed the House earlier this year with 11 Democrats crossing party lines to vote for the joint resolution. The Biden administration unveiled the most aggressive tailpipe emissions ever crafted as part of its sweeping climate agenda and efforts to push Americans to buy electric vehicles (EV). The vehicle pollution standards, proposed Wednesday by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and announced by the White House, will impact car model years 2027 through 2032. The White House said the regulations would "protect public health" by achieving carbon emission reductions of nearly 10 billion tons by 2055 and would save consumers an average of $12,000 over the lifetime of vehicles. "Cars and truck manufacturers have made clear that the future of transportation is electric," the White House stated in a fact sheet.

History may someday record today as the beginning of the end of the internal combustion engine – and of individual liberty in the U.S. According to news reports, the EPA is scheduled to release proposed auto emissions standards today on new car sales so stringent that the only way for automakers to meet them would be to shift two-thirds of their fleet to electric. But wait. How can a regulatory agency do that? Consumers aren’t demanding electric cars. Lawmakers didn’t vote to force them on the public. The Environmental Protection Agency knows better, though, and, unless it’s neutered, plans to force EVs on you – for your own good.

Americans are fleeing blue states, and especially blue cities, in historic numbers. Can things possibly get worse? They can, indeed they can. Take San Francisco. Things are so bad there that Whole Foods, an iconic liberal company, has shut its flagship store in that city after just one year of operation, due to rampant crime and drug use that, the company said, made it impossible to assure the safety of its employees. But when it comes to commercial real estate, San Francisco, while very bad, is not the bottom of the barrel. John Phelan reports on a series of corporate departures from Minneapolis and St. Paul.
