And since the ultimate goal of the protests was not just preventing legislation from being passed but to topple the government, it’s far from clear whether the prime minister can long stay in power after this humiliation

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The death penalty could be abolished in Ohio under upcoming bipartisan legislation announced Tuesday--the latest in what has been years of effort to end capital punishment in the state. (Snip) The Ohio Prosecuting Attorneys Association opposes the legislation, calling it “dangerous” and saying it would cut Ohio’s “worst criminals” a break. Republican Attorney General Dave Yost, a supporter of the death penalty, said in a statement that the bill provides a platform to discuss a needed overhaul of Ohio’s capital punishment system, calling it “a farce and a broken promise of justice.”

The former Republican congressman from Wadsworth argued last week that the system, under which voters can change their political party affiliation whenever they cast a ballot in a primary election, had been “abused” by Democrats and Republicans who switch parties to meddle in the affairs of the opposition party. “This is called primary ‘raiding,’ and it’s no way to run elections,” Renacci wrote in a guest column published in the Akron Beacon Journal. Does that happen? Probably, but not at the scale Renacci seems to believe.
