Public schools are failing all over the country. States like Illinois and Maryland have barely any students performing at grade level.
Schools seem more concerned with pushing woke garbage about ‘equity’ than teaching basic skills.
Despite all of these problems, far left crank Bernie Sanders is demanding more money for teachers. He wants a minimum salary of 60K for all teachers.
The Hill reports: Sanders calls for minimum salary of $60,000 for public school teachers

Yeah, hey, sure.... let's just go ahead and reward incompetence. Shoot, why not make it 70 or 80k minimum. I mean, they work hard turning kids into incompetent drones, right?

Teaching...Where else can you produce nothing and get good pay and benefits all year while "working " only 9 months a year, get guaranteed pay increases, retirement and be totally incompetent? You could be in the US Congress as a Senator or Congressman.

The small town where I lived in rural Oregon just raised the minimum teacher's salary to $60,000. Just read it yesterday. What's going on? They just lost their ambulance service due to lack of money?

Good grief. I’d go for it if there was a yardstick that showed the kids could actually read, write and do math. But were paying for a lot for nothing as it is now.

Let's see...... majored in graduating from college with no discernible skills for the real world. Spend only 9 month's a year actually working, lifetime union benefits and retirement, unable to be fired after achieving tenure (10 years on the job), accountable to no one and failing the children nationwide.
Yep. Sounds like $60,000 of taxpayer money well spent.

Pretty smart as campaign promises go, draw the votes of hundreds of teachers' unions and millions of teachers, force the taxpayers to cover it all. This is far better than paying off college loans because there are far fewer deadbeats and students out there who chose stupid majors that will never result in employment. Got to hand it to the old Communist. I am reviewing the Communist Manifesto and old Bern could be the reincarnation of Karl Marx. How long will $60K be enough? Burger flippers are already bored with $15 per hour and are again refusing to go to work. Sales going on now at the burger places are advertising sale prices that were too high just two years ago.

My liberal niece teaches in the Bronx. She loves Bernie.
She has had to dummy down her teaching ambitions to survival tactics.
Kids are not taught to think and learn....and most don't care.
The school administration is very set in their ways....which most likely is not in the best interest of the students.

First, nearly all school funding is local property taxes.
So if you don't have a good property tax base, you will be hard-pressed to get that type of funding to support such salary level.
Most teachers have zero authority to do anything any more. They actually get into more trouble if they intervene, which is a problem their unions have not addressed, and most work in hostile work environments.

One size does not fit all. Cost of living is radically different if you live in Arkadelphia, Ar compared to Philadelphia, Pa. Not to mention the appalling lack of education produced by a majority of 'teachers' in heavily democrat cities and their government schools.

The money is already there...but they hire 2 administrators for every new teacher. Fire half of the admins,
But...truth be told Bernie wants all of THEM to get the same pay....or more.
There was a story recently that at Stanford, teachers and staff out numbered students 1.3 to every student, admins already outnumbered teachers. Pubic schools in some places are very similar..
Perhaps Bernie et all had Baltimore students do the Maths for this one...where not a single student in 58 schools met even the minimum standard when tested.

Poor Bernie, no one pays attention to him anymore, so he has to try to find a popular cause.
That said, I work in a Lutheran (LCMS) Christian private Classical school, where we actually teach children the Bible, reading, writing, arithmetic, actual American and world history, (true) science, geography, etc., and do so with a small, but very dedicated staff (I, personally, act as Preschool Director, but also teach vocabulary and math classes for some of the older grades). We make less than public school teachers, for sure, and I bet you Bernie isn't worried about us. We are, of course, some of those dangerous, radical, extremist, conservative Christians. Of course, we aren't unionized, because we don't do the job for the money, but rather because we actually care about the students and want to do what we can to develop citizens of character, knowledge, and Christian virtue. It is a true ministry. And I would not trade it for any public school cesspool.

If the beginning wage is $60K that will bump up the whole pay scale. A teacher currently making $58K will want $70K, etc...

Ya "Might" be able to do that if seats were full, but no NEW schools were needing to be built. Average elementary/Middle school is 528 students. Biden/Bernie/Dems are allowing that many NEW school age kids cross our southern border every single week(sometimes every day)...and guaranteeing them a desk...and requiring local school districts/property owners to pay for and provide that desk. Meanwhile every new schools costs Millions if not 10's of millions, design costs are ridiculous, and construction costs even worse...4 times residential costs, and more than double commercial costs. Let alone siting, land acquisition issues.

Soon enough the government schools will be steadily shrinking in size in states where vouchers are the law. We need to get this in all states.
If your mechanic cannot fix your car....you go to a different mechanic. Incompetence in any service industry is met with a loss of customers, and eventual bankruptcy. Except in government schools where they are paid from funds coerced by force from everyone, and if a family would like to use a different school, they must PAY FOR BOTH the government school, which they reject as incompetent, and the actual school that they choose.
This totally broken system needs to end. School funds should follow the child to whatever school the parents choose. Government propaganda centers for children need to be closed.

I have a pet idea that I would like to see tried. For every 10% that taxes being paid by and getting raised for people not getting income from taxing entities. taxes on people getting those paychecks from that taxing entity should go up double. These leaches think there is an endless supply of tax money to draw from, they need to have some real skin in the game and feel some of the hurt.
