USA Today: Stop Using ‘Culturally Sensitive

Greetings such as “aloha” and “shalom” are “culturally sensitive” and their use could “come off as mockery,” according to a recent USA Today piece demanding people “consider the cultural implications” before using such terms. In an essay published in USA Today on Friday, titled “Is it time to stop saying ‘aloha’ and other culturally sensitive words out of context?” reporter David Oliver argues, “just because you can say something doesn’t mean it’s always appropriate.” Claiming that “aloha” has a “deeper meaning” than just hello or goodbye, the author states, “If you’re not Hawaiian and you say it, it could come off as mockery.”

Soooo, like if you're not Italian, you should not sing opera? If you're not black, you should not fist bump and high five? Or say, "You go, girl." How about, "Gesundheit "? That list is going to be miles long. Fools.

On the up side, maybe mindless news readers will finally stop pronouncing foreign place names like they think native speakers do. It’s a wonder they don’t break their tongues trying to roll their Rs. They should be embarrassed, but I think they lack the requisite self-awareness.

Once upon a time, school children were taught that America’s Greatness was in no small part the great melting pot. That immigrants came here not to be taken care of by the state, but for the opportunity to work , to succeed and to be free. And their cultural traditions meshed and influenced other immigrants and their traditions . And here we are.

I was taught that English is an inclusive language. We have more words because we accept foreign words. It has many more words than other languages. For example French has a board that determines what are French words, thus limiting their language. Aloha is a good word meaning hello and goodbye. There is nothing wrong using a word from a different language if it is used appropriately. Who made them the word police anyway?

"Culturally sensitive" -it's all in YOUR head; not in the mind of the person you heard. You CANNOT know what is in the mind of someone else. It is all your assumption. Even more laughable is being a third party and assuming you know that one person is offending and that the other feels offended. (This is how we ended up with "Latinx.") Everyone should be culturally sensitive in what the say and culturally thick-skinned in what they say. Instead, we are the opposite. Ponder this.

When did Moderna start developing its COVID-19 vaccine? Moderna’s CEO Stephane Bancel already made headlines at World Economic Forum’s (WEF) elitist Davos 2023 conference by saying he wants an mRNA vaccine factory on every continent and by confirming his negotiations with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to bring Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccines to China. But there’s more: Bancel admitted on CNBC at Davos that Moderna was already working on a COVID-19 vaccine in January 2020 before the virus had reached most countries and before it even had a specific name. Bancel went on CNBC at Davos to discuss a new Moderna RSV vaccine. But something far more interesting slipped out.

Britain’s top food watchdog recently warned that bringing cake to the office is comparable to subjecting coworkers to second-hand cigarette smoke. Professor Susan Jebb, chair of the UK’s Food Standards Agency, told The Times Health commission, “We all like to think we’re rational, intelligent, educated people who make informed choices the whole time and we undervalue the impact of the environment,” adding that “If nobody brought in cakes into the office, I would not eat cakes in the day, but because people do bring cakes in, I eat them. Now, OK, I have made a choice, but people were making a choice to go into a smoky pub.”

We saw that in the acceptance speech of Ke Huy Quan when he won Best Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes. We saw it from Brendan Fraser at the Critics Choice Awards. They were both so grateful and happy that after a long time “in the wilderness,” they were given a chance to act again and prove themselves in the roles in which they shined. But Richard Dreyfuss is showing us something else again with his quest. Maybe that’s because even though he worked in Hollywood,

As California emerges from a two-week bout of deadly atmospheric rivers, a number of climate researchers say the recent storms appear to be typical of the intense, periodic rains the state has experienced throughout its history and not the result of global warming. Although scientists are still studying the size and severity of storms that killed 19 people and caused up to $1 billion in damage, initial assessments suggest the destruction had more to do with California's historic drought-to-deluge cycles, mountainous topography and aging flood infrastructure than it did with climate-altering greenhouse gasses.
