Dozens of people have been killed after a plane with 72 people on board crashed near an airport in central Nepal.
The Yeti Airlines flight from Kathmandu to the tourist town of Pokhara crashed on landing before catching fire.
Videos posted on social media show an aircraft flying low over a populated area before banking sharply.
At least 68 people are confirmed to have died, officials said. Several critically injured survivors were taken to hospital, unconfirmed reports said. Local resident Deeveta Kal told the BBC how she rushed to the crash site after seeing the aircraft plunge from the sky shortly after 11:00am local time (05:15

I'll be honest, my first thought was...Did the pilot suddenly die?

Near the Himalayas airports can be treacherous. Weather conditions can make flying impossible, approaches to runways can be challenging, and runways themselves tend to be short, requiring operator precision. The pilots must pay attention to everything. It's not clear what caused this crash. If the problem wasn't mechanical, did something happen to the pilot?
Pokhara is not far south of Dhaulagiri and southwest of Annapurna, the seventh and tenth highest points on earth. The over 100 mile around Annapurna trek, the trail rising to over 18,000 feet elevation--dangerous to trekkers--goes through Pokhara. Poon Hill, the best vantage point to see Dhaulagiri's 4,000 meter high (and unclimbable: too dangerous) south face, is just north of Pokhara. Central Nepal has some of the most beautiful landscapes and mountainscapes on earth. Dhaulagiri (26,895 feet) is the highest mountain on earth that is completely in one country (Nepal); the six higher peaks are all on borders. Annapurna (26,545 feet) is only some twenty miles east of Dhaulagiri, but the world's deepest gorge, the Kali Gandaki Gorge, separate the two peaks and all their sister peaks in the Dhaulagiri massif and the Annapurna massif, nearly as impressive as the highest two.

This is very sad. Such a large loss of life must be investigated and no one should be spared

Anyone flying in this area of the world on the local airlines is literally taking their lives in their hands. Very mountainous terrain with very bad weather conditions for flying, poor and outdated equipment at the airports, and mountains blocking radar over large areas, and finally questionable pilot skills and equally third world maintenance standards on aircraft and navigational equipment.
No, thanks.
A friend flew into Kathmandu around 15-20 years ago, and there was the burned our hulk of another airliner laying beside the runway. The airlines name had been painted over, but the wreckage stayed there for some time because it was not easy for them to move the wreckage in such a remote area with such primitive equipment available.
I'd take alternate means of transportation, regardless of the time and effort required if I had to get to someplace around there.

Sorry for your loss. If you watch the ten second video in the article, it looked like normal aircraft attitude then a sudden bank left directly into the ground. Did these pilots get vaccinated or suffer a medical issue? The ATRs have been removed from service here in the US.

Pilots are very busy during final. Add to that the remote location and challenging runways and it's surprising this doesn't happen more often in that area. When I say busy, I mean it. Anything goes wrong and the trouble is huge, given the terrain. Sad.
I'm a good enough pilot to know that I'm not good enough to do that job. Takes steel nerves.

Posters are correct. A very dangerous area for aviation. We don't know what happened yet...sudden stall caused by pilot error? Some sort of equipment failure, but that seems unlikely. Commercial aviation in the US is very safe, but there are places elsewhere I would never fly to, beautiful as they may be. My brother made several trips to Russia and said he was terrified the whole time he was on a Russian airliner. Very casual attitudes about safety.
