President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden met with patients at Children’s National Hospital in Washington on Friday, carrying on a longstanding tradition during the holiday season.
The first couple, sporting cloth masks, met with pediatric patients, their families and hospital staff, greeting leadership and emergency department workers. Dr. Biden read Ezra Jack Keats’ “The Snowy Day” before the Bidens visited with children and their families in the cardiac intensive care unit.
“Thanks for coming and listening to me read and have the president hold the book,” she said after reading, as Biden deadpanned, “It’s my job.”

Republican Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell attacked former President Donald Trump over the losses the GOP sustained during the 2022 midterm elections. The Senate GOP leader defended his decision to refuse to fund some GOP candidates in competitive races to NBC News Wednesday. McConnell said that Trump’s influence during the GOP primaries is to blame for their losses during the midterms and vowed to “actively look for quality candidates” in 2024 as he’s “less inclined to accept cards that may be dealt to us,” NBC reported. A nationwide shoplifting epidemic is crippling the finances of brick-and-mortar retailers, which warn that they may be forced to raise prices or even shutter stores in order to offset tens of billions of dollars in lost inventory.
The National Retail Foundation is estimating that it lost $94.5 billion last year due to “shrink” — an industry term that means lost inventory — which is being blamed primarily on shoplifting, according to the Wall Street Journal.

On Thursday, in her final press conference on Capitol Hill as a leader in Congress, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took a swipe at former President Donald Trump while reflecting on her legacy.
“I was speaker and minority leader under President Bush, under President Obama, under what’s-his-name,” Pelosi said, referring to Trump. “The hardest thing that I had to do is when we had a Democratic president and we were in the minority, as minority leader, was to sustain a presidential veto. Because the Republicans would roll out stuff that sounded like a chocolate sundae, but it’s more like doggy doo.”

Social media users were not buying President Biden’s call for unity during his Christmas address Thursday afternoon.
The White House promoted the event as Biden planning to "deliver a Christmas address focused on what unites us as Americans, his optimism for the year ahead, and wishing Americans joy in the coming year." The theme of "what unites us" continued throughout his speech as he called for Americans to look past political differences.
"So, my hope this Christmas season is that we take a few moments of quiet reflection, find that stillness at the heart of Christmas, and look really look at each other, not as Democrats or Republicans,

It’s simple: In a head-to-head matchup, Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis might be able to take down former President Donald Trump in 2024. In a crowded field, Trump will win easily.
This isn’t just my opinion. It’s what Trump’s own inner circle believes. In a story published Thursday, the Washington Examiner collected anonymous statements from more than half a dozen Trump insiders, and the consensus was clear:
“Though DeSantis currently matches or beats Trump head to head in many national polls, Trumpworld predicts the Florida governor will fizzle as former Vice President Mike Pence, Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Tim Scott (R-SC),

“Our country is under invasion” by illegal migrants who are being aided by President Joe Biden, former president Donald Trump declared in a short video released on Wednesday.
He continued:
Far more illegal immigrants have entered the United States in the last two years than at any time in American history — and by a massive margin. We’ve never seen anything like it. Our country is under invasion.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky kicked off his whirlwind visit to Washington Wednesday — his first trip outside his country since Russia invaded 300 days ago — by presenting President Biden with a medal previously given to a Ukrainian military officer.
“I’m delighted you could make the trip,” Biden, 80, told the 44-year-old Zelensky as the leaders began their bilateral meeting in the Oval Office — referring to his Ukrainian counterpart as “the man of the year” in reference to Time magazine awarding Zelensky that honor earlier this month.

“Entrenched systemic racism” is a significant risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia in non-white Americans, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) claimed in its 2022 update on how to fight the disease.
The HHS’ “National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease” said black, Hispanic and low-income populations are more likely to face health-related risk factors that contribute to Alzheimer’s and said this disparity is due to “structural inequities” that are the result of racism.

WASHINGTON D.C. – Fox News spoke to Americans who say they were forced to save cash and buy fewer holiday gifts this year as congressional leaders push a $1.7 trillion spending package, which critics warn could fuel ongoing inflation.
"I have saved to be able to do Christmas with the kids," Irene, from Arizona, told Fox News. "Things are a lot more expensive."
