Here's What Happened After a Man Went
Overboard on a Cruise Ship

It’s a survival story that appears to be made for the movies. The Carnival cruise ship Valor reported on Thanksgiving day that a passenger had gone overboard. His sister reported him missing around 8 a.m. but hadn’t seen him since he left a bar to use the restroom around 11 p.m. the previous evening. At that point, the U.S. Coast Guard got involved. The ship turned around and retraced its route hoping to find the unidentified man. Eventually, Valor continued on its way with no sign of the man. The Coast Guard conducted an intensive search, alerting all vessels in the area to the emergency. The Coast Guard resources included

I'm happy for him and his family- he has just gotten a second chance at life, literally. But when I first heard this story my mind started to write the background deets - his evil beeyotch of a wife pushed him over the railing because he was worth a whole lot more dead than alive. Down he falls, and she goes back to their room certain that she pulled off the perfect crime ( he was drinking a lot, you know). And then, after 22 hours, he's rescued. OMG!!!!!! He's baaaack!!!!! Smile. Keep smiling. Maybe he won't remember. Or maybe he will...

You wonder how someone falls off of a ship. A "hold my beer" moment when he wanted to see if he could urinate into the ocean from the liner, and climbed up on the rail to do it? Or was he "helped" by a person who wanted him dead? Doesn't seem like walking on the deck, no matter how drunk could get you over the rail without some sort of "assistance", either climbing the rail or a malevolent shove. He's very lucky to have survived. 70F water sounds nice and warm, but I can assure you that after diving and swimming in Florida springs which run 68-70F, even on warm sunny days in summer will get you thoroughly chilled in a hour or two. He must have had some significant clothing on to help him stay warm in the water, and also been a decent swimmer to not have tired to the point of drowning. Just surviving the impact with the water is a lucky thing. I'd guess that many who fall that far (40 feet? 60 feet?) are knocked out by the impact with the water and drown before they can gather their wits and start swimming.

All the stories say he could have been in the water as long as 15 hours. So, what's the minimum amount of time he could have been in the water? Just because he was last seen at 11:00 pm, fifteen + hours before he was rescued, doesn't mean that's when he fell overboard. It's probably too good a story as-is to ask any follow-up questions, but some inquiring minds would like to know.

In the Lifesaving merit badge program at Scout camp, one of the most useful techniques they taught was "drownproofing," which involves floating, facedown in the water, holding one's breath for somewhat longer than normal, then lifting one's face out of the water to breathe, and repeating until help arrives. Some people have "drownproofed" for up to a day if the water is warm enough not to kill them with hypothermia. During the peak of hurricane season the Gulf of Mexico is usually in the upper eighties. Hypothermia takes up to a day in water of this temperature. But we're in late November now. The Gulf is below eighty now, and so this blessed fellow might have had some angelic help to have lasted 22 hours in seventy-five degree water. He had to be numb. I would suggest that he never try this again. He was discovered three hours after dark. The odds were impossible, but he beat them.

The “warm glow” that people feel when imbibing alcoholic beverages is a result of vasodilation. This causes the body to lose warmth naturally and would be an additional risk factor during submersion in ocean water at the depths and the location the man was found. The body needs a temperature approaching ≈96-99 degrees to stay alive long term. Immersion in water temperatures of even 80 degrees for several hours would be debilitating and potentially deadly. Bundling up with street clothes or outerwear would not help. Not only would they be useless for warmth when saturated but their water-weight would tend to pull a human body downward. There is a school of thought that believes bottomed jeans were developed for sailors for easy removal in the water as a safety precaution. I suspect this man was, shall we say, well padded due to a healthy appetite and very, very lucky.

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., threw cold water on President Biden's hopes to pass an assault weapons ban during the lame duck Congress on Sunday. Murphy argued that the votes for such a bill are "probably not" there for Democrats, despite the president's push to enact a ban following a spate of shootings in recent weeks. The 50-50 split in Congress means Democrats would need 10 Republicans to defect and vote for the ban in order to overcome a filibuster. "I’m glad that President Biden is gonna be pushing us to take a vote on an assault weapons ban," he told CNN’s Dana Bash. "The House has already passed it.

Advocates of wind and solar energy have argued that the cost of those energy sources would decline over time as they are more widely adopted. That never made any sense, and it has not proved true. In fact, the cost of both wind and solar energy is destined to continue rising sharply as the massive quantities of materials they require become more expensive as a result of increasing demand, driven by ill-advised (the politest adjective I can think of) government mandates and subsidies. In fact, the cost of electricity generated by wind and solar is already skyrocketing. My colleague Isaac Orr reproduced this chart at American Experiment.

American consumers and virtually all industries could take a hit at the beginning of the holiday season if workers do strike as soon as Dec. 5. Congress could intervene and impose contract terms on railroad workers, which is what Mr. Biden is urging them to do. Thanks to the Railway Labor Act, passed in 1926, Congress can force workers back to their stations with a congressional resolution.
