A Florida man has been declared missing after allegedly attempting to jet ski from south Florida to the Bahamas.
Charles Walker, 52, was last seen on Pompano Beach around 5 p.m. on Sept. 23, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office. Walker’s family said he was planning on jet skiing from the beach to Bimini in the Bahamas, a distance of around 115 miles.
While in the water, Walker’s last known location was 15 nautical miles off the coast of West Palm Beach, per the Coast Guard.
He is 5 feet and 9 inches tall, weighs 190 pounds and has gray hair and green eyes,
So, he took off for the Bahamas sometime after 5 PM.

To be on the ocean beyond sight of land is pretty scary. On a jetski must be terrifying. At night...
There are currents. Strong winds. Sharks. Some people hold their own lives mighty cheap.

It’s a laugh they described this guy so well. If found out in the middle of the ocean on a jet ski, he can’t possibly be mistaken for anyone else!

Not as crazy as you think.. it's been done before. But like #2 said, once you're out of sight of land it's all the same and your phone won't make calls, although your GPS should work.

Anyone who tries to jet ski from Pompano Beach to Bimini is much bolder than I would ever be. Getting yourself lost in the Bermuda Triangle on a sixty foot cabin cruiser is one thing--disappearing on a jet ski in the middle of an angry ocean isn't my idea of fun. Neither this fellow nor his jet ski will ever be seen again. What a way to go. Florida Man!

Back in the 1960s, a young woman appeared on the Johnny Carson show, and talked about her journey across the Atlantic Ocean, beginning the next day.
This was the plan.
She would enter the ocean at Montauk Point, and swim all day each day, resting on her tender boat each night, start swimming the next morning, until she reached Europe. Sponsor money, she said, would provide for her daughter. The swimmer was a single mother.
The next day, she entered the waters off Montauk Point and was eaten by sharks.
I thought of her when I read this article.

Although this feat is entirely possible it is not recommended. Why a 5:00 pm start, was he drinking all day? His IQ is not listed in his physical stats.

Barring some elaborate plot to fake his own disappearance/death, we can be confident that this man lands somewhere on the left fringe of the IQ bell curve.

Most men have at least one child by the age of 52, making him ineligible for a true Darwin Award. Article just mentions “family” with no further description.

Re #2, I'd have to disagree that "To be on the ocean beyond sight of land is pretty scary." In a jetski.....you have a point. It is a stupid stunt.
I've done it many times, in boats from 18 feet to 36 feet, and on board a number of ships. In any reasonably sized and capable boat, if you have some navigational sense and skills, it isn't much of a deal. Not a jetski.
One passage from the Bahamas back to Florida in a 36 foot sailboat was a bit "interesting" in a Force 8 gale with 18-25 foot seas for about 8 hours, but I worked the foredeck, setting and reefing our one sail the entire time and rather enjoyed the ride. Stand on the bow, toes over the tip and at the bottom of the trough, feet a foot into the water. As we rode up the wave and crested it, hanging in the air 25 feet or more over the next trough, then rushing steeply down the other side. I thought it was great fun. But after 8 hours and one rogue wave which smacked us pretty hard on the beam, we tired of it. Some on board had serious seasickness, which is unpleasant, I hear. I don't ever get motion sick, thankfully, which is why I was working the deck while others were either green or tending that way.

Probably just a poor decision, as others have said. But, the thought did occur, without knowing all of the circumstances, that leaving so late, & disappearing on the ocean at night on a jet ski, might be good cover to fake death by having someone pick you and your jet ski up in a boat & deliver you to a desired location.
