The Longest Reign, and a Sudden End

Just after 6.30pm Buckingham Palace announced: The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. That is how swiftly the transition happens: The Queen is dead; long live the King. So the man and woman who arrived at a Scottish castle as Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall will depart just hours later as "the King and the Queen Consort". Just forty-eight hours ago, the Queen was pictured with her newest prime minister, having invited her to form "a government in my name"

Comments:

Despite the plalin vanilla beginning, this piece is an eloquent tribute to and description of the late queen. Mark shows the importance of her life, and her qualities that we will not see in present or future heads of state.

Watching King Charles III return to Buckingham Palace with thousands cheering his arrival, I'm struck by the fact that Charles just lost his mother, and people are cheering and smiling, and he's expected to smile as well. Anyone whose lost their mother or father knows smiling just isn't possible for quite some time. I suppose this sort of behavior is expected in England. The stiff upper lip and carry-on sort of demeaner that is a British trait. Still, when I lost both of my parents, I didn't want to see anyone, or talk to anyone. I just wanted to be alone.

Memento mori. I am reminded of a vignette told about Charles de Gaulle, when attending a funeral of some highly placed politician. His companion remarked on how it was a shame that such an indispensable man would pass on. De Gaulle replied that, "The cemeteries are full of indispensable men." It would be well for us all to remember, "As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more. But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all." Psalm 103.

England may not know it yet, but Charles his whole life, has been a loose cannon, and will cause misery to his kingdom. He is a whacky environmentalist, along the lines of Algore, and unlike his mother, he will not accept his role as monarch which requires him to speak what is written for him by the controlling party, but will try to be independent. It could be a bit of a sticky wicket to keep him on the throne. It will be fun to watch.

It is suggested that she would not have been Queen if Edward VIII had not abdicated but he had no children and as next in line she would have taken the crown upon his death in 1972.

Re the comment at #5. For what it's worth, Edward the Seventh had a reputation as an unserious party animal and collector of mistresses, and when Victoria died, more than a few people worried about what kind of king he would make. Fortunately, Edward was up to the job. Let's hope Charles can grow into it as well.

#7 a consort is the spouse of a king or queen. Charles is known to be rather "prickly" and is a known opinionated and outspoken progressive. I don't see him becoming a beloved king. This is probably the beginning of the end for the monarchy.

Why doctors aren't speaking out 36 replies

Dear Steve, You ask why doctors are silent. The electronic medical records (EMRs) are a ball and chain to physicians. We are tracked through them. When I wrote a prescription for Ivermectin for a patient, with informed consent (she was vaccinated), I received 5 letters threatening my medical license, my hospital privileges, and my insurance contracts. I would not have received 5 letters if I killed someone in negligence or malpractice. If I have my license pulled, I will no longer be able to help my patients. I speak to patients on a one-on-one basis, but speaking out would destroy my family.

What do you do when there's an earthquake? Well, the safety rules all depend on where you are. If you're in a car, stop the car and stay inside. If you're outside, find an open spot, far from power lines. If you're inside, and your building is damaged, get outside right away, in case it collapses on you... Unless you're in China, under lockdown, that is. Then the safety rules don't apply. Case in point: The politburo in Beijing dictated last week that Chengdu go into lockdown — maybe just for a few days, they said. we'll see how it goes. Then, on Monday, there was an earthquake in the area

A recent top-secret cable sent by CIA Headquarters to its field stations apparently warned in stark terms of the loss of a substantial number of assets. In particular, the message focused on issues with the secure handling of sources and apparent errors made by CIA case officers that had led to the compromise of their sources. If true, this news ought to alarm every American, and drastic, corrective action ought to be taken immediately. CIA is taking a lot of hits these days. It should. Its leadership has gone dangerously astray and gotten involved in domestic political matters which should never be the province of a foreign intelligence organization.

Gorbachev, who we last heard from when MTV still played music videos, exited this mortal coil yesterday and went to the Great Politburo in the Sky. While I generally consider myself to be well informed I have to admit that I thought Gorby checked out at least twenty years ago. That’s probably because he was a mere footnote to the demise of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Of course, commie-loving American leftists don’t see it that way. It’s one of the most famous moments in sports history, or 20th Century American history, period. Jackie Robinson, the first player to break the pro baseball color barrier, took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers on the road against the Cincinnati Reds. A hostile racist crowd poured abuse down onto him. But then, Robinson’s teammate Harold “Pee Wee” Reese shamed and quieted the crowd by walking over to Robinson and putting his arm around him in a gesture of support. It’s a moment immortalized in film, in children’s books, and even in bronze. But as the Wall Street Journal revealed in a recent article, the whole episode never happened:
How Dick Cheney created Anthony Fauci 3 replies

Few people in America today are as powerful and polarising as Anthony Fauci. For the Left, Fauci is a consummate cool-headed scientist, emblematic of the essential role of government. On the Right, he is a Deep State operative who destroyed the lives of countless people to serve a hidden agenda, all while mysteriously taking home a bigger paycheck than any other of the country’s two million federal employees (including their collective boss, the President). The reality is that both narratives fundamentally misunderstand the position Fauci occupies in American government. Far from being a public health expert, Fauci sits at the very top of America’s biodefence infrastructure.

First, for those of you who haven’t read all of the previous columns in this space, a definition. What is Weaponized Governmental Failure? Simply put, it’s the process by which urban socialist Democrats intentionally muck up the basic tasks of municipal governance and create such soul-crushing environments that middle-class taxpayers and voters decamp for the suburbs, thus leaving an electorate incapable of throwing off the political machine. My theory is that Weaponized Governmental Failure, or WGF for short, was arrived upon serendipitously. At some point in the 1990s, Democrats noticed that some of their worst mayors — like Washington, D.C.’s Marion Barry — were simply unbeatable despite dismal performances.

NEW YORK — Payment processor Visa Inc. said Saturday that it plans to start separately categorizing sales at gun shops, a major win for gun control advocates who say it will help better track suspicious surges of gun sales that could be a prelude to a mass shooting. But the decision by Visa, the world’s largest payment processor, will likely provoke the ire of gun rights advocates and gun lobbyists, who have argued that categorizing gun sales would unfairly flag an industry when most sales do not lead to mass shootings. It joins Mastercard and American Express, which also said they plan to move forward with categorizing gun shop sales.

Former first lady Hillary Clinton was put on the spot when Bravo host Andy Cohen asked what she’d want to ask Melania Trump, who moved into the White House 16 years after Clinton and her husband moved out. In a “Watch What Happens Live” segment called “Host Talkative,” Cohen began by showing a photo of the 45th president’s wife. Clinton was asked to ask the first thing that came to mind. “Ummm... How’s your summer going?” Clinton asked. The quick reply got a chuckle from the show’s host as well as the former Secretary of State Clinton’s daughter Chelsea, who was also on stage in the show that aired Thursday.

Merchant category codes are made up of four digits and are used across all sorts of industries as a means to classify retailers, while not revealing individual product purchases. Credit card companies currently lump firearm retailers in with other outlets, classifying them as either “5999: Miscellaneous retail stores” or “5941: Sporting Goods Stores.”
