French tax authorities using AI software have found thousands of undeclared private swimming pools, landing the owners with bills totalling about €10m. The system, developed by Google and Capgemini, can identify pools on aerial images and cross-checks them with land registry databases. Launched as an experiment a year ago in nine French departments, it has uncovered 20,356 pools, the tax office said on Monday, and will be extended across the country.(Snip)The tax office–or le fisc, as it is known–says it is now looking at using the system to spot undeclared annexes, extensions and verandas including permanent pergolas. “We are particularly targeting house extensions like verandas,

Instead of cheating on their taxes they should vote for better people who won't tax everything imaginable. A tax on pools and verandas? Wow.... They should spend more time building local power plants to free themselves from their insane dependence on Putin and a lot less finding "illegal" pools.

the exact same thing happened a couple of years ago in the town of riverhead ny (on long island) - interesting case - am told that finished basements and pools generate the lowest return on investment for a house. the best are supposedly bath and kitchen improvements - but these cannot be seen from drones.

A growing number of Americans are using 'buy now, pay later' services to purchase basic goods such as groceries, raising concerns about consumers taking on more debt. Installment-pay services such as Klarna and Afterpay offer interest-free short-term loans to cover purchases, but the fines for late payments can be steep, and critics fear their ease of use could lure shoppers into dangerous debt.(Snip)Chipotle is one of the restaurant chains that partners with Zip, allowing hungry Americans to put 25 percent down on a burrito and pay off the remaining installments over six weeks. Charging electric vehicles in Britain soon will be more expensive than filling up gasoline-powered cars thanks to soaring electricity costs—an economic switcheroo that could be a harbinger of shrinking financial benefits for Americans who go green. British energy regulators told electricity consumers to expect to pay 80% more beginning Oct. 1. The national price cap on residential electricity will send the average bill from about $190 per month to an estimated $343 per month, or more than $4,000 per year. The shocking price hike stems from the nation’s limited reserves and Russia’s cutoff of one of the region’s major sources of electricity generation: natural gas.

Philip Klotzbach, a forecaster at Colorado State University specializing in Atlantic basin hurricanes, wrote on Twitter on Tuesday that "for the first time since 1941, the Atlantic has had no named storm (e.g., tropical storm or [hurricane]) activity from July 3rd-August 30th." Klotzbach further pointed out that August of this year could finish as the only August since 1997 to have no named hurricanes.

It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the—I’m going to say something—it’s semi-fascism.” Now, Democratic politicians painting half of Americans as beneath contempt is old hat.
