Justice Department officials assume they can't rely on what former President Donald Trump's lawyers say given Trump's volatility as a client. That's according to The New York Times, which reported that department officials had been in communication with Trump's representatives for months while trying to recover hundreds of pages of government records that were improperly moved from the White House to Mar-a-Lago after Trump left office. The report cited Justice Department officials as saying they worked under the assumption that Trump's lawyers couldn't "speak with authority" for him because he could change his mind at the drop of a hat

Thursday, during an appearance on Hugh Hewitt’s nationally syndicated radio show, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) criticized President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness proposal.
The Florida governor said not only was it a policy “disaster” in that it threatened to make economic problems worse. He predicted it would be a political “disaster” because of the public’s reaction.
“Oh, I thought it was terrible,” he said. “One, it’s unconstitutional, which is obviously something important. I don’t think that that’s something Biden cares about, but he doesn’t have the authority to do this. Two, you’re going to be having farmers, people that have their own small businesses, waitresses, they’re going to be on the hook
Ben Domenech calls it “unconstitutional flimflammery.” Sounds about right. The proper authority to forgive student loan debt is the same authority that authorized the program in the first place: the United States Congress. But Biden — like the last four presidents — is ignoring Congress because it’s too damn slow, and besides, they talk too much.
This is true, but that doesn’t make it any more constitutional. “The president proposes; Congress disposes” is the old adage from my high school civics class. Biden is doing a lot of disposing of student loan debt with a fig leaf for justification.
