Maryland State Police see ‘increased’

The Maryland State Police saw a spike in interest for concealed carry permits after Gov. Larry Hogan ordered the agency to drop the restriction that applicants show a “good and substantial reason” to carry a pistol. MSP spokesperson Elena Russo told The Washington Times Wednesday that “there’s been an increase in phone calls and applications” for concealed carry permits since the U.S. Supreme Court last month struck down “good cause” type provisions in eight “may issue” states, such as Maryland. “The Maryland State Police Licensing Division reminds citizens a wear and carry permit is still required before you can legally carry a regulated firearm on your person,” Ms. Russo said

Comments:

Maryland is reacting sanely, as opposed to NY's hysterical legislative tantrum. NY will be straightened up by the courts, AGAIN, and Maryland will discover that only good things happen when honest citizens can legally be armed for self defense.

It is required that a $75 dollar registration fee be sent in with the applications. So whether or not the permit is granted Maryland gets the 75 bucks.

Still lots of oppressive crap, but at least not "not a chance in Hell you are getting a permit, so stop bothering us", which was the way it was. 16 hours training ininitially, and then 8 hours every renewal....both very over the top oppressive, and INTENDED to be an additional barrier to you exercising your "shall not be infringed" Constitutional RIGHT.

Maryland state government is a master at this game. Has there been a commensurate uptick in the issuance of these licenses? The State Police will slo- or no-walk these applications, claiming lack of resources to do the necessary checks prior to issuance. That way the legislature, convening in January '23, will be able to act to make the eye of the needle narrower, somehow keeping within the recent decision.

About 15 years ago, someone I know who shot expert in the Army, was an NRA certified instructor in both rifle and handguns, applied for a Maryland concealed carry permit. His application was rejected. Reason? He typed the application, instead of filling it in by hand. The real reason they rejected it? Because they can.

They need the same sort of a "no BS, I mean it" federal judge as they got in Illinois. He said the entire statute was unconstitutional, and that meant that there were NO restrictions on anyone carrying a gun, starting NOW. Then, he stayed his own order for 90 days, and made it very clear that there would be NO extensions, and that anything but a clear, reasonable objective standards law would be immediately struck down with no stay. Built a real fire under them, and they came up with a pretty reasonable law. But it took a no BS judge giving them zero wiggle room. I waiting for the case on the new HissyFit Against Guns law that NY state just passed to get judged. It will probably be a lot of fun, but not for NY state.

Most of us would agree with many of the aspects of Western leftists’ utopian objectives: A world at peace, disease, and starvation eradicated, and humanity living in harmony with Mother Nature. It all sounds wonderful, no doubt. Just about every person on the planet would love to see an end to war, though once established utopia may look very different depending on one’s views on religion and governments’ roles. Seeing an end to global hunger and sickness has been a common goal of societies for all of human history [snip] For each of these aspirations, a key difference between leftists and non-leftists tends to be a fundamental understanding of human nature.

We can never allow people to erase Thomas Jefferson from American history. Thousands of years from now, his masterpiece — the Declaration of Independence — will be held up as a turning point in human history. The first two phrases alone changed the world. A 34-year-old Colorado man is recovering after he was gored by a bison Monday at Yellowstone National Park. According to park officials, he was walking on a boardwalk with his family near the Old Faithful geyser. The group reportedly did not leave the area when a bison charged at them. The bull bison continued to charge and gored the man, causing injury to his arm. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital. Park officials say the matter is under investigation, but language in the news release suggests the man was too close to the bison.

How many lives do European coal plants have? Nobody knows. But by now, most of the world understands that Europe’s reliance on coal is no longer deniable. In a time of global energy instability featuring an embargo on Russian energy, the EU’s wealthiest nations have embraced coal as a savior like the Peanuts character Linus grasping his blanket. Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands are planning to utilize their coal plants to make up for a shortage in power from gas plants. Although many gas drilling projects have been resurrected around Europe, electricity from gas plants is set to decrease due to the Russian ban.

Believe it or not, overturning Roe v. Wade may not be the Supreme Court’s most dramatic decision this year. Instead, its ruling on West Virginia v. the Environmental Protection Agency could prove far more consequential. It could literally upend how our government works. For the better. West Virginia vs. the EPA asks whether important policies that impact the lives of all Americans should be made by unelected D.C. bureaucrats or by Congress. This SCOTUS could well decide that ruling by executive agency fiat is no longer acceptable.
