ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The U.S. Army on Thursday identified the soldier who died this week of injuries sustained during a bear attack in a military training area in Alaska. The Army in a statement said Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant, 30, was pronounced dead at a hospital on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage following the mauling Tuesday. Another soldier received minor injuries in the attack in a training area west of the Anchorage landfill, according to the Army. Plant was from Saint Augustine, Florida, and had been at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson since July 2021, the Army said in a statement. He

A tragic way to die. It's believed the bear was protecting two cubs in a remote part of the military base.

A real tragedy. I remember hearing early in my military career that new assignees to Alaska were essentially briefed that, while outside, they now had to see themselves as part of the food chain.

I spent a year up there at a remote base and those things are terrifying. I had one roar maybe 20 yards from me and the sound wave pressure pushed my chest in. Another chased me off a bridge. Neither wanted to eat me or I'd have been eaten. They wanted the fish.

This should not happen to any American soldier. If they're in bear territory they should be well armed at all times while on duty.

When I hiked in Alaska, which was in the middle 70s, I carried a .44 handgun, except in the parks, where it was then illegal. Fortunately, now state laws apply inside the parks, and I go armed in Yellowstone and other parks with big bears. Sad that they apparently weren't armed to protect themselves against the real, but relatively rare, threat of bear attack.

Read a lot about the building of the Alaska Highway but never read of any bear attacks at all...of course, military folks were allowed to be armed back then.

Democrat Adam Frisch, who's hoping to run for the U.S. House of Representatives seat held by Rep. Lauren Boebert, said Thursday he wants to make amends with a Pueblo restaurant and other businesses that were affected by a "muck-up" during his kickoff election tour of Colorado. Frisch planned to stop at barbecue restaurants in towns and cities in Colorado District 3, which Boebert currently represents, on a 1,100-mile campaign tour last week. But poor communication and even worse research led to parts of the tour, including the Pueblo leg, being disastrous. Before the tour, Frisch was told that his campaign
