The New York Police department is looking for a gang of thieves who have been tearing around the Bronx and Manhattan and snatching thousands of dollars in jewelry off of unsuspecting pedestrians.
Five crimes fitting the same description occurred across the two boroughs in broad daylight between March 18 and April 17. The first crime happened on March 18 at 12:38pm in the afternoon. A pair of men on a black motor scooter rode up to a 47-year-old male on East Fordham Road in Fordham Heights in the Bronx. The thieves snagged an $8,000 gold chain from the victim's neck before riding off, according to police.

With apologies to Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden, Adolph Green and Fyodor Dostoevsky,

Hey, I'm going to walk the streets of NYC. Wait. I forgot to put on my gold chains.

And if the police catch these thieves, they'll be back on the street without bail before the cops can finish their paperwork.

I remember this happening in NYC during the Carter administration when the price of gold skyrocketed due to insane inflation, gas lines and mortgage interest rates in the teens. The only difference is that back then, they didn’t use scooters - they used bicycles.

Anyone who wears gold chains in today's NYC is an obvious Darwin candidate.

Sorry. but the mayor is busy with sartorial engagements and yelling for the right of dames to kill an unborn child till the day of delivery. Well, soon they may change that law. Let's kill the kid after it's born. The dame may want to go out and get pregnant again and does not have time to bother with a newborn!

Since the glory days of the Medellin and Cali cartels, the worst criminals have been known to strike in pairs on one motor scooter. If you're in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central or South America and see two riders on a moto, beware. They might be either robbers or killers. Pablo Escobar, especially, liked employing assassins on motos.

Connect a thin aircraft strength cable to pole nearby and set them up. When they grab the Gold chain the wire will tighten on their wrist and as they speed away pull their arm clear off the body. Captured convicted and punished all in one!

Don't think I'm blaming the victims here but I don't know anyone who wears 5 figure jewelry anywhere, much less NYC.

Why are the police looking for them? If they find them the DA will just let them go. Why bother?

Do people really walk around the streets of NYC wearing gold chains around their necks, chains worth ripping off?

Scooters, huh? Well, that means you're going to have to lead them a little bit before putting them down.

Re #10, not all these things actually have spokes. Some have nearly solid wheels. But some have sort of "mag wheels", a piece of rebar might do the job. Of course, applied across the forehead would work well, too.

That was my thought, #17. I used to shoot a lot of skeet. Make sure you have a proper lead and keep swinging as you fire.
Seriously, as other posters have remarked, why would you make yourself a target by wearing bling on the streets of NYC?

USA slips and slides proudly into Third Worldism. Here, the scooter gangs commonplace in Londonistan lend a bit more international flavor to the sidewalks of the Rotten Apple. Don't worry; Celebrity Mayor Adams remains perfectly safe with his armed security detail.
