South Carolina has set a date for its first death row execution since renovating its Death Chamber to accommodate inmates who choose execution by firing squad.
The state’s Department of Corrections (SCDC) announced Thursday that Richard Bernard Moore, 57, is scheduled to be executed on April 29, which would be the state’s first execution in over ten years. Moore was convicted of killing James Mahoney, a convenience store clerk, in Spartenburg and has spent over 20 years on death row, the Associated Press (AP) reported. He will choose between the available execution methods of either death by electric chair or death by firing squad.

I like this, except for one thing.
One of several rifles should fire a blank, so that no one bears any chance of guilt for the actual execution.
I expect that this law will wind up being challenged for the next 3 decades or so.

Nice to have options! I’d like to to see the menu of choices, I’m sure they have the pros and cons of each method listed on a cartoon chart. This is Monty Python territory.

Like the guard who throws the switch on the electric chair, the guards firing the guns will have to live with their actions for the rest of their lives. I couldn't do it.

You know when you fire a blank, #1. There's a difference in kick. Besides, it wouldn't be too hard to find 6 "volunteers" who are experts in firearms to take part in this adventure. Being an executioner has to fall on someone's shoulders, so why not 6 or more?
My problem with this is that the firing squad used to be for executing those of more "noble" character, like military men, not for thugs and vile criminals. The rope was reserved for murderers and horse thieves.

#1 standard for civil executions IS at least one rifle does have a blank. If I remember right military is only one has a loaded bullet.

Only agree if they get Biden, Pelosi, Schumer, Austin, Garland. Milley... and the rest of traitors to attend and stand before the firing squad, for treason.

I hope this catches on, especially now that electricity is becoming more expensive and will be in heavy demand to run all of our cars. Next we have to work on putting these animals away on a timely basis and not keeping them in the zoo for twenty years before we make up our minds.

I will believe it will happen when I actually see it on the news or read about it. Bleeding heart libs will see that it doesn't happen.

Sorry, #1, but a blank in a rifle is easily distinguished by the shooter from a live round by the recoil. A blank has essentially zero recoil, and any real rifle cartridge has significant recoil.
Perhaps if the shooters had never fired a gun before they might be fooled, but no experienced shooter (which is what you want on the squad) would be fooled. Now everyone could CLAIM that "I had a blank" if they were uncomfortable with the deal, and that may assuage some consciences, but nobody would be actually unable to tell if they fired a live round versus a blank. Really obvious.

#1 and #7: About the only state that allowed for execution by firing squad was Utah. Their last execution was Gary Gilmore in 1977. They used several rifles, all of them pre-sighted and bolted to a bench. One rifle was loaded with a blank cartridge; the weight of the bench diminished the perception of recoil. There was one civilian on the firing squad, chosen by a lottery from names of volunteers. About 25,000 Utah residents volunteered.
If my state ever allowed civilian volunteers for a firing squad execution (fat chance, given the leftist squishes who moved here and elected a Democrat governor), I’d put my name in. I view it as similar to jury duty...

If they ever start prosecuting for treason, sign me up for firing squad detail. Yes, I know it will be a full time job, but I'll do it as long as they meet my salary demands: $1/year.

Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth, agreed, but the victim did not get to choose which method they died! So why should their murder! The death penalty should be more states and they shouldn't wait so long to get it done. It costs the taxpayers millions to keep them there so long with all the perks they get while they wait. People should take a look at what prisoners get on our dime. It's ridiculous a lot of people can't afford that stuff for themselves. Most even have web pages. They also shouldn't be allowed conjugal visits. They're there to be punished! Why are they getting rewarded?
