Full disclosure: I despise Steven Spielberg movies and dislike both Romeo and Juliet and the 1961 West Side Story (WSS) movie. For that reason, I take particular delight in noting that Steven Spielberg's remake of WSS may have enthralled critics, but no one is rushing to see it. And no wonder, given that it's so darn woke that parts of it are in a language most Americans don't speak, but Spielberg refused to include subtitles. Let me quickly get through my biases. I hate Steven Spielberg movies because I find them overblown, predictable, and incredibly boring. I also dislike the way he presents children.

Delightful to read how Americans' feet vote against woke indoctrination. (QV the woke Salvation Army donation debacle.) I expect they'll make high school kids watch this drivel soon enough. We had to suffer through the original WSS in a high school assembly back in the '70's. We responded with weeks of non-stop finger snapping, driving the teachers nuts.

Let's not overthink this.you've got Leonard Bernstein, Steven Sondheim. it's a beautiful show. try to enjoy it.
People that work in the world of fantasy tend to bring the same fantasy to their politics. big deal, get over it.

When part of the movie is in another language (Spanish), I want to know what they are saying. Speilberg's woke respect for Spanish and no subtitles did not help. He could have had Dpanish subtitles during the English parts if he wa to to be Equitable.

Naturally, the amalgam of leftists at IMDB give it an 8 out of 10 rating, which seldom happens. The word 'genius' is 'liberally' spread throughout. I have no intention of wasting any time or money on this anti-American garbage.

Isn't it strange that Spielberg rose to fame making movies that resonated with large audiences even as the Hollywood elite shunned him -- and now he himself is an elitist wokester who receives critical acclaim while the moviegoing public largely ignores his work?

In 1961, at 15, I saw that movie. I vaguely remember the big scenes, and Natalie Wood (major crush) stood out the most. That red-headed guy doing the over-the-bar pull-up inspired me to work out to do the same. I thought it was a fun movie, since I was too clueless to get the message about the race thing. To me, it was just two street gangs going at each other.

When I heard he deliberately didn't include subtitles because we are a "bilingual" country(?), I decided I deliberately wouldn't see it. I take whatever small stand I can against wokeness.

Another prime example how left destroys everything it touches. No, I will not be going to see this. I did love the original and spent many hours in the theater as a kid singing along. My friend and I would ride the bus to the theater all alone and watch the move and then ride back home. That was a wonderful time when kids were safe and movies were worth watching. It was a great time to grow up and sadly, one that kids today will never experience.

As a general rule, I love musicals, but WSS didn't do much for me, and still doesn't. I guess urban youths in gangs didn't appeal much to me as a girl growing up in a small southern town. It might as well been about a colony on Mars. It has some nice tunes, but I prefer Lerner and Lowe or Cole Porter.

As if anyone was sitting around thinking, "Gee, what we we really need right now is a remake of 'West Side Story.'" Nobody was asking for this. It's just more evidence that the so-called Entertainment Industry is completely out of ideas so all they can do is rehash what has already be done.

I agree with everything she says. I never liked West Side Story and I won't see this one. Why do a remake? Hollywood is running out of stories and writers so they do remakes. Then the remakes are full of nudity and violence and wokeness which after a while becomes boring. Old movies had plots and characters, not political messages. in Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, the two young people were caught up in the political hatred of two opposing sides. The Friar who mistakenly thought he was helping them, made things worse. It was not a play of romance; it was a play about love and hate and good intentions gone bad.

No surprise here that Steven Thunberg mounts (okay, he never left) his woke-steed. It's sad to see someone prey on the spoils of past glories. The best thing about the prior movie is Bernstein's magnificent score. Largely due to that---as well as Sondheim's lyrics, and Jerome Robbins choreography---I rank it as a truly American musical theater landmark, of the greatness of 'Showboat' or 'Oklahoma'.

The original WSS won 10 Oscars. There was no category in which a remake could be better. No one was wondering if a new version could improve the original. People are sick of remakes, especially ones that are already classics.
The woke casting didn't work, either. Those who complained about the original are still complaining that this version isn't woke enough. Gee, complainers like to complain. Whodathunkit?
There's no star power to garner interest on that front. The male lead has a reputation as a very creepy perv for the folks who do follow celebs, and the female lead likes to post how much she hates America. That's not exactly a big draw.
The lack of subtitles was the biggie, though. The typical watcher who doesn't follow celeb stupidity and such found themselves in a movie they couldn't follow. That's going to be the word-of-mouth on this - not that it looked pretty, or that the songs were okay, or anything like that. It's going to be, "I have no idea what was being said."

Well in fairness 2 movies I still enjoy Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and Treasure of the Sierra Madre have Spanish only portions but they aren’t in your face about it. BTW I wonder how good Obama’s Spanish is years after telling us we need to learn it.

#1 - Also in the early 70's WWS made its TV premier with a two-night presentation. During lunch the day after the first night, the senior and junior boys recreated/mocked the opening dance number between the Jets and the Sharks in front of the gym. They had worked out the routine during our morning "nutrition" break and it was well done and hilarious. Then the dufas science teacher thought it was real, broke it up and sent them all to the Dean of Discipline. Thankfully the Dean had a sense of humor and let the boys go.

First of all, the movie West Side Story is one of those films that didn't need a remake. Second, when more than half the characters in the movie speak Spanish and there are no English subtitles for the citizens of a country where English is the language of that country, I'm not surprised the movie is a flop. Did Spielberg make the movie for all the illegals coming into the country? Who agreed to make a movie speaking Spanish with no English subtitles? If I wanted to watch shows with characters speaking Spanish, I'd watch the more than half dozen Spanish language channels that I pay for each month on cable.

Excellent article and one more hollywood failure to gloat about. I wouldn't watch this piece of garbage or any other distraction that they have prepared to entertain me on Christmas Day, which is the reason for the holiday. Andrea is spot on concerning Spielberg. All of his movies are built up by hype, huge advertising, shorn up by special effects but come across as long, weak and boring. I would sooner watch a rerun of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, a low-budget slice of West Coast lunacy with a still-tolerable Sean Penn.
Puerto Rico has been a useless, expensive, constant thorn in our side since the fifties and is just another failure that America has adopted, like an abandoned pet. I spent over a year down there in the Navy and couldn't leave fast enough. They are all thieves, protesters, cutthroats and whiners.

FTA: "I dislike Romeo and Juliet because it's hard to imagine two more nincompoopish young people. "
As I remember, "Juliet" was supposed to be only 13 years old. That explains A LOT.
Also, if Spielberg is all in to honoring Spanish, then why are they singing the song, "America" in English? Isn't that Puerto Ricans singing to Puerto Ricans?
And when the US took over Puerto Rico in 1898, all natural-born Puerto Ricans became natural-born American citizens. PR was not a colony, it was a territory.

I had no interest in the movie when I read Spielberg refused to add English captions for the folks who don't speak Spanish. That right there was his biggest mistake. Agree with OP about how he presents kids in his movies. The Goonies was okay, but after that, it started getting a bit creepy.

Politics aside, this was a GREAT movie. The singing, acting and dancing were superb (special kudos to Justin Peck the Choreographer). The current movie explains some of the holes in the old script. The score was 99% original. I especially liked that the actors were age appropriate, the diction was perfect (quality not seen in current tv or movies). By the was, there were only a handful of scenes where Spanish was spoken and only 2-3 where the dialogue went on for over 2 pages. It was not hard to tell what they were saying if you followed along. Kind of rewarding to figure it out. . Spielberg makes some great movies and, like HOOK, everything he spent was up on the screen. Did I miss Natalie Wood...of course but as an example of a great mobile musical this one gets 5 stars.

Stories that are extremely "New York centric" like this have never been particularly interesting. I started to watch the old movie West Side Story once....didn't get too far into it. I just don't care what the criminal classes of NYC did or talked about in the 1950s. And my introduction to Spielberg was not a good experience.
IMO, Close Encounters of the Third Kind was the most ridiculous, stupid, embarrassingly bad movie that I ever made the mistake of paying to see. After that, I really tended to avoid Spielburg's movies. I had never heard of him before that, and when I found that he wrote and directed it....I know where the blame for the stupidity of the plot and actions properly should be.
I've never been impressed with this provincialism that NY folks have, thinking that they live in the center of the universe, and all that happens there must be of great interest to the rest of us. I have visited NYC many times, finding it to be a big, noisy, dangerous place where most of the people were somewhere between unfriendly and actively, intentionally rude.
Sorry, a story about NYC Puerto Rican criminals in the 1950s doesn't interest me, and I wasn't likely to see it anyway. The Spanish-without-subtitles part is just another layer of reasons not to waste my time or money.
Spielberg is WAY overrated, especially in his own mind.

English is the language of the Evil WHITE European Invaders. Of course, Spielberg would not want his musical opus to use the language of the oppressors. Better make it in the original language of the indigenous people of Puerto Rico: Spanish.
Oh, wait, the Spanish Conquistadors (Conquerors) were also Evil WHITE European Invaders! So, why didn't why didn't Spielberg film the movie in the indigenous Taino language of the Arawak natives?
Raysiss!

Why is it that, instead of coming up with new movies with entertaining story lines, all Holly-weird can seem to do these days is remake old movies?!?!?!?
Are they so lacking in talent that they can't come up with new ideas? Are they so weighted under the lie-beral mandate that all new movies be "politically correct" and "woke" that it is impossible to come up with anything that will actually entertain normal sane people? Do they like losing money by putting out movies that offend more than entertain, and drive most of the people who like going to good movies to stay home?
Coming next to a mostly empty theater near you, James Bond (ultimate suave and debonair ladies' man) becomes J Bond (transgender homosexual freakshow), and watch that franchise crash and burn (which, to be honest, it should have done before "wokeness" mostly destroyed the last few James Bond movies)!!!

Spielberg has made some good movie and some bad movies - not all of Hitchcock's movies were gems. I have no reason to see this latest version, he should have subtitled the whole movie English and Spanish.
He had it horrible wrong in close encounters, we would never communicate with aliens with music, how'd do they know they even had music?? We would communicate with math - 1 + 1 = 2 everyplace in the universe, a B-Flat is only B-Flat on earth.
