The fugitive parents of accused Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley broke down in court Saturday morning as their involuntary manslaughter charges were read aloud, and the judge set their bail at $500,000 each.James, 45, and Jennifer, 43, Crumbley were captured early Saturday in the basement of a building on the 1100 block of Bellevue Street in Detroit, less than half a mile from the Canadian border, police said. They were taken into custody after leading authorities on a large-scale manhunt. Both Crumbleys pled not guilty to all four charges of involuntary manslaughter - one for each high school student who was killed in the school shooting Tuesday.

I am not sure how I feel about this precedent being set. Just feels like an attack is being prepared against all responsible gun owners right now with this arrest. They might have been negligent about how they stored their weapons, but this story just feels off in some way or another. I don't believe we are being given the whole story at all.

There are a lot of things about this case that bother me. Were the parents aware of the bullying? Kids often don't tell their parents things. Nothing is more embarrassing than having your parents go to the school about what other students do to you. Liberal parents go into denial all the time about their little babies, some of whom also become school shooters. Some of whom become "school-shot" because they were the bullies the bullies. It doesn't justify the shooting or the shooter. But... the school seems to be sloughing off all the responsibility for this on the parents. That's not right, either. The parents should have searched his bag? Why didn't the school search his bag? Why didn't the school report the issues, including the bullying (if that's factual - kids lie about that, too). On school grounds, it is the school that has ultimate authority and responsibility to protect the students going there. It sounds like they failed, miserably. Just like the Florida shooting the left groans about constantly. At least there, the shooter was remanded for therapy - he just never showed up and no one did anything about it. Why do I suspect that these parents are going to be railroaded by a Soros-bought prosecutor? I can see why they ran! There is no justice in the U.S. anymore.

The headline is irresponsible, inappropriate and misleading as it tries to make the implication that the parents were about to flee to Canada. Their home is in a Detroit suburb; much of Detroit is within a mile of the Canadian border. So what?

Yes, a "mile from the Canadian Border", yet there is the little matter of the Detroit River that is about one-half mile wide at Detroit.

Headlines are changing...prior ones said their car was found "abandoned" and they were hiding in the nearby basement of a Warehouse. Their car was "parked", and they were in the adjacent Art Studio space. If they had wanted to be in Canada, they could have crossed the bridge, used the tunnel, gone a bit north and used the ferry. (Before Covid restrictions, I used to cross over into canada several times a year when I was in the Detroit area, grab lunch and some Cubans, no long lines, no waiting. It took less time than just trying to find a place to park near Downtown) The cops said they were "Fugitives", but their Lawyer had to hear about that on the Radio News. States that they were going to voluntarily appear for arraignment that morning. Law enforcement/media claim that them withdrawing money from an ATM was suspicious...yet...having funds in hand for "Bail/Bond, retainer for Representation" makes perfect sense.

They had been named in the news throughout Michigan, and you can bet Ontario, within the last few days as the controversial parents of the 15 year old school shooter who were being sought out by US law enforcement, so if they were to show up at a Canadian port of entry, they as any other US citizen that would have to state their reasons for entering Canada and would have had to present at least a U.S. passport card to identify themselves, and documents showing that they have been fully vaccinated for COVID at least 14 days earlier. Apparently both of those people have been convicted of DWI In the USA, and a criminal records check would have shown that. Based upon all the above information, chances are they both would have been denied entry to Canada with US law enforcement being notified of their presence at the Canadian port of entry. The parents may not have known all that, but in essence trying to enter Canada would be a no go for them.

Parents should not be held strictly responsible for actions of their children. I have seen a family (thankfully, not my own) where one child was a model person, one was pretty darned good, and one is a total loser. The total loser was a close friend and neighbor in 2nd through 6th grades, and then we moved away and I didn't see him until I was 9th grade, we hung around for a few years then, hunted together and then I moved away again, didn't see him until we were in our 30s. He never held a job very long, took drugs, always looking for "a great new idea", tried importing things from Ecuador to sell here, eventually lived there for years. Never amounted to anything, while his siblings on either side, age-wise, did well for themselves. Never seemed to go too far astray of the law, AFAIK, fortunately. Lived with his parents in his 60s....apparently no income or savings. Same parents, same genes, same upbringing......radically different outcomes. People are different, and while parenting is very important, it can't 'fix' everything, the classic "nature versus nurture" discussion. Blaming the parents for this sort of violence, is a stretch, a real stretch, and I don't think it is good for society, or even realistic.

They didn't flee from the law. They no doubt wanted to get away from the neighbors ... staying at home might have become untenable. I think I'd want to get out of town. As for being near the Canadian border, other commenters here have made the point that there's nothing at all unusual about that. As well, Canada's pretty unhinged about COVID and it's not that easy anymore to go to Windsor even without COVID. Now you need special identification along with vaccination cards. At one time, moving between Windsor and Detroit was routine. We used to go to lunch in Windsor all the time when I worked downtown.

This article is real garbage. It says a "Tipster led police to their abandoned car on the east side of Detroit, where they were found in a building early Saturday." You mean their parked car? There are dozens of industrial buildings converted to living and studio space near the Eastern Market, which is only blocks from downtown. No doubt they have a friend living there. Everything in Detroit proper is near the Canadian border. If they were within a mile of the Canadian border crossing, they weren't on the "east side." The east side is well outside of the downtown business district, nowhere near the tunnel or the bridge. I would add that Oxford is about 40 miles north of Detroit, not all that near. If they were fleeing to Canada, it would have made more sense to go across at Port Huron, only slightly further away in the opposite direction.

Read these comments and the parents are innocent. I'm still contemplating why the parents thought it a good idea giving their 15 year old son, with apparent anti-social tendencies, a gun for Christmas. And I'm very concerned the school didn't insist the kid be taken out of school for a proper medical evaluation.
