The Bronx, N.Y.—Hundreds of Bronx families signed up for free internet access and $11 laptops on Monday as part of a new federal program. More than 1,200 families at the Melrose Houses will have affordable internet access thanks to the Emergency Broadband Benefit program. The families lined up in the basketball courts on Courtland Avenue to sign up.(Snip)The program was made possible through Congress, which set aside $3.2 billion to the Federal Communications Commission to help low-income households pay for broadband and internet- connected devices. “Over 1,200 families can get free access to the internet. At first, then affordable after that.

Indeed, #1. My mother always pointed out that government "freebies" were never free, be it welfare, or anything else such as this. If you didn't earn it, you'll never appreciate it.
It galls me that my tax dollars are going to programs like this, but on the other hand, I'd rather pay what I pay for the services and products I use with the proceeds of my own labor. That's how I honor my mother's teachings...

Most of those kids probably have high-end Apples already, courtesy of their local stripped-out department store.

So that's where all the wasteful spending is going to. Leave it to demonrats to waste taxpayer money left and right. These so-called welfare recipients are making out big. I bet their welfare "income" exceeds that of workers by now.

Amazing economists, the Democrats. Used to cost them housing and food, and now they can purchase their slaves with a phone and lousy broadband.
Sad people do not realize the cost of free stuff. I guess if you care not a whit about dignity, then one can sell it cheaply.

Do not assume internet access is a net positive for "low income" households
As far as childhood academic accomplishment, IT'S THE EXACT OPPOSITE!
Academic study from Duke University:
https://files.eric.ed.gov/fulltext/ED511763.pdf
"North Carolina public school students...introduction of home computer technology is associated with modest but statistically significant and persistent negative impacts on student math and reading test scores. Further evidence suggests that providing universal access to home computers and high‐speed internet access would broaden, rather than narrow, math and reading achievement gaps"
The road to hell is paved with good intentions...

Considering that Web porn sites are one of the primary destinations for those surfing the Web, I'm sure this is greatly appreciated by the Democrat's base.

Free is very affordable. Americans pay the highest internet and telephone bills in the world in exchange for third world service, and atop that we provide free Dubyaphones (called Obamaphones in The Community and La Communidad) and broadband and freeish laptops to The Underserved, while at the same time being excoriated for our privilege. Where does the forced generosity end?
