SEC warns of scammers impersonating the
federal government in messages, calls

The Securities and Exchange Commission is warning investors to beware of scammers impersonating government officials in phone calls and messages, marking the latest effort by fraudsters invoking the authority of the government in an effort to fleece ordinary Americans. The alert cites misleading emails, letters, phone calls and voicemails that appear to come from the market regulating agency. The messages purport to raise concerns about suspicious activity or unauthorized transactions in people’s checking or cryptocurrency accounts.(Snip)The SEC said anyone receiving an unsolicited message or call from someone claiming to be with the SEC may call the agency’s personnel locator to determine if the person is actually from the SEC.

Comments:

There's a mighty thin line between fraudsters invoking the authority of the government in an effort to fleece ordinary Americans and what the government has been doing to us for quite some time now.

The call we laugh the loudest about is the one where they warn that our Social Security account is being suspended and we have to call Right NOW! Erase the message, laughing.

OP is right it is getting very difficult to differentiate between scammers and government officials. Scammers typically cost you less.

That’s what most people do but they aren’t looking for us. They are looking for the 1 percent who are old and starting to lose their faculties. Losing their SS is probably the worst thing that they can imagine. I would cheerfully put a bullet in the head of these scammers. By targeting vulnerable old people they are worse than bank robbers.

hey folks - just register your number on the "do not call" list to prevent these calls coming to you. s/ on a related note, ohio apparently is going to make it illegal to "spoof" calls - which transmit a false originating phone number. have no idea if they have any plans to bring penalties to bear on these people because no such activity takes place with violations of the DNC list.

A troupe of Morris dancers have ditched their 500-year-old blackface tradition amid a racism row and have performed for the first time while painted green today. Silurian Border Morrismen had voted to scrap the black face paint for their Boxing Day Tour to avoid causing offence in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement. The group today performed their English folk dance routine to crowds of onlookers in Ledbury, Herefordshire, with their faces painted dark green instead.(Snip)It is believed black soot was historically worn by the English folk dancers as a disguise so they could beg for money without getting in trouble with the law.

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is continuing to criticize the NFL’s and the country’s handling of COVID-19, saying in an interview Tuesday that it had become unscientific dogma. In the interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the football star noted that his resistance to vaccine mandates had become a cause and produced social-media calls for his silencing or punishment by the league or Silicon Valley. “If science can’t be questioned, it’s not science anymore; it’s propaganda and that’s the truth,” he said. Rodgers noted that many NFL teams are quietly experimenting with various treatments unannounced. “When did science become this blind agreement and then not having any debate

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene denounced Kwanzaa as a “fake religion” just as millions of Black people start to celebrate the weeklong holiday. The far-right Georgia lawmaker berated the national College Republicans for “pandering and BS” after the GOP group tweeted a seemingly innocuous happy holiday message. “Stop. It’s a fake religion created by a psychopath,” Greene said. “People are tired of pandering and BS.” She was apparently deriding Kwanzaa founder Prof. Maulana Karenga, who was convicted of felony assault in the 1960s in what he says was a politically motivated prosecution spurred by his involvement in Black nationalist politics. Greene suggested that the College Republicans should avoid political correctness

The House of Representatives has passed a bill that seeks to eradicate blasphemy against Islam. The bill, H.R. 5665, is truly remarkable as it amounts to Congress making a law respecting the establishment of Islam and reducing the United States government into a tool of the world’s ayatollahs. The actual text of the bill not only seeks to eradicate blasphemy against Islam around the world – and solely against Islam at that – but even requires the federal government to reorganize some portions of the State Department along the lines of an Islamic religious institution which will be responsible for interpreting the Quran.
