Road Deaths Are Soaring Even as Americans
Are Driving Less

Data on U.S. traffic fatalities in 2020 shocked safety advocates: At a time when people were driving less, deaths jumped. In fact, they were higher last year than in any year since 2007. And 2021 could be even worse. The federal government estimates that 20,160 people died in motor vehicle crashes in the first half of this year. That’s an 18.4% increase from the same period in 2020.

Comments:

We know why. “Vaccidents”.

Oh, puleese! in 2020 we were largely locked down and businesses were shuttered. Now they're not. We've been through this nonsense decades ago when states made billions on the 55MPH speed limit. Daddy Buttigig is fishing for relevance. How about allowing truck drivers to visit California ports? This is a plan to limit or discourage personal travel.

I’m gonna go with vaccidents. Deaths due to bleeding out because of the shot. Deaths due to strokes or heart problems leading to accidents. Not out of the realm of possible at all because it’s a huge uptick with nothing other in society changing except the death jab. Logic, folks.

The graph does show deaths are down from 2020. From my experience 2021 traffic is still in less than it used to be so thereare still open roads for speeding and then there is more drinking. Also we now are told roads are racist, the left wants to outlaw private cars so this is propaganda to push for more regulations like Buttigieg is pushing. fjb

I’m inclined to think that it’s entitled drivers who don’t believe that they need to follow any laws. I don’t ever go out to run even an errand or two when I don’t see at least 3 people blatantly run red lights. On the interstates, I’ve had people pass me on the shoulder going over 80 mph. My last trip down I95 I was in the left lane when a loud sports car came roaring up on my tail. I put on my blinker and began to move into the center lane when he passes me before I was halfway out of his lane. I’ve had millennials almost run me down walking across a supermarket parking lot and I’m a small grey haired almost 70 year old woman. Perhaps people look at the completely corrupt government we have and think to themselves, “They don’t obey the laws. Why should I?”

If it is due to heart attacks, strokes, or other seizures, then it should show up in an increase in single vehicle crashes.

Well, it's only fair to say it's vaccidents, since the demo-commies claimed every death was due to the kungFlu; including gunshot wounds, motorcycle accidents, accidental drownings and so on.

Since we have so many more “safety devices” to protect us, one wold think we would be approaching invulnerable! Obviously, government must mandate even more safety devices. But probably to busy perfecting the “clot shot”.

This rise is a blip in a long-term downward trend (see the chart in the article), but it's Buttigieg's "crisis" and he's going to do something it "for the first time ever." Bless his bicycling little heart. But the "crisis" has stirred up a rat's nest of progressive activists, all dedicated to punishing drivers and forcing them to behave more defensively. I need to see a lot more examination of the numbers. I bet, based on distantly remembered studies from the NJ Turnpike, that these fatalities are impacting African Americans disproportionately. Death is racist.

I agree with #4. I am in rural area and we have been covered up by people moving here from the cities. They drive like they are still there. That doesn't work on Farm to Market roads. There is a whole different group of obstacles to watch for. Too many drivers have not had good driver's education. The really don't know what a solid yellow line in their lane means, for example. I also work next to a major north-south non-interstate highway. Traffic is actually a lot busier that before covid. Imports moving in and probably a lot of Xiden's invading friends headed north, hopefully to Maryland or D.D.

I don't think traffic is any busier than before Covid, but where I live, but people seem to drive as if they're angry. Maybe it's the Biteme affect. I know whenever I see some vehicle with a Bernie sticker or some woke leftist BS message on it, I tend to tailgate more often.

All I ask of other drivers is to stop cruising in the left lane and I could die happy. Do these ignorant morons ever see the mayhem going on behind them as people jockey to pass? IMHO worse than texting drivers although frequently the same. It is the law in FL REGARDLESS of speed: ' .. a driver may not continue to operate a motor vehicle in the furthermost left-hand lane if the driver knows or reasonably should know that he or she is being overtaken in that lane from the rear by a motor vehicle traveling at a higher rate of speed../snip/ .A violation of this section is a noncriminal traffic infraction, punishable as a moving violation as provided in chapter 318.' We all pass and we all keep our cool. http://www.leg.state.fl.us/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&URL=0300-0399/0316/Sections/0316.081.html

Hubby drives a semi and he almost daily tells me horror stories of how many almost accidents he observed because of stupid driving. I almost got run off the road by a garbage truck because he couldn't look in his mirrors (yes I called the company and complained about their driver). But people on phones, people that probably shouldn't or don't have a license (based on ethnic looks) - but with the defund police and the bad attitude towards police, they aren't stopping these people any more.

Huge swaths of the people driving on our roads came from third world countries, or other countries with very different driving conditions, perhaps never even owned a car before, or only drove on dirt roads at 25 mph, or rode a bicycle or motorcycle. And drunk driving seems to be a perfectly normal, nearly daily behavior in many Mexican males. Lots of folks out there have nearly zero idea what they are doing, just learning on the job. I know from riding with a lot of drivers in former soviet countries that a lot of otherwise sane people in those countries are pretty bad drivers. I've been pretty frightened in other's cars over there more than a few times.

#14 hit one of my hot buttons...Left Lane Hogs...driving with a complete lack of situational awareness. Completely oblivious to how their positioning on the road impedes the flow of traffic. Let's be realistic, traffic moves at 10mph over the speed limit, whether it is the interstate or a 4 lane city street marked 35. Or not being able to make a left turn on the green arrow from 5th in line because others leave 8 car lengths between the car in front. Leaving room for others to make a right on red or at a stop sign if possible. Anything to help traffic move. We haven't even talked about the street racers with their exhausts that sound like gunshots and act like they are trying out for Fast and Furious 77. I know a few NC state troopers and they've all commented that really high speed driving, 90-100+, was way up.

I'm not a traffic safety expert like Pete Buttigieg nor do I play one on TV but I would take a hard look at the number of states that indulge in legalized marijuana and check that status against their safety records. As a kid, I could always make my way home from a bar but being stoned and driving is not a combination that will allow you to drive accident-free. Since grass is a sacred leftist cow, the articles will not dare to mention that. As for type of vehicle, I drove my sports cars like a maniac but now that I have an SUV I drive like the proverbial little old man on Sunday. Weight means nothing if you don't crash.

There are various causes of fatal accidents, and mere inattentive driving can put one in a situation that can't be escaped without terrible things happening to nearby unlucky drivers in the wrong place at the wrong time. But what #17 wrote resonates with me. There are certain types of people who think nothing of getting fried to the eyes and climbing behind the wheel. In certain cultures driving while ****faced is acceptable behavior. (I saw a cop show with a head on crash between a family of four and a driver from Central America who rang the Drunkmeter at an unbelievable 0.61% BAC, and wasn't even injured in the crash because his body was so loose. The cops were as angry as any I ever saw.) These border crashers bring that habit with them to America. Yes, some of us will pay the ultimate price because the Donks want those damn illegal votes. Xiden and Co.'s open door to international riffraff is eventually intended to outnumber America's now shrinking middle class, the ultimate political treachery. Stop them while they can be electorally stopped. Time is short.

It's a national Ferguson Effect combined with Police Chiefs' fear of infection from interaction with the public. What we are experiencing daily is not normal. And nobody in the community is talking about it. The mild-mannered western State in which we live has become a lawless wasteland on the public roads. I was doing 75 in a 65 yesterday in the middle lane while getting passed by an endless stream of people doing 80 on both sides of me, along with the occasional 90. Everybody tailgating. Everyone using lane sensors to change lanes inches from the guy/gal behind them. The police suddenly appeared again at the first of the month. Everywhere I went, I saw police with drivers pulled over. And speeds were back to normal. Then, the day after the election, they disappeared again.

In my state of Colorado, the test positivity rate is almost 10 percent, with 1 in 48 infected and if the current trend continues, this will be the worst COVID spike the state has seen. On the surface, that doesn’t make sense, since nearly 80 percent of eligible Coloradans have received at least one vaccine dose, suggesting the vaccines are not working as well as they should or as advertised

WASHINGTON — Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary who holds the purse strings to much of President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure package, was holding forth with reporters on its impact — the promise of more electric cars, intercity train routes, bigger airports — when a pointed question came. How would he go about building racial equity into infrastructure? The 39-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate laid out his argument that highway design can reflect racism, noting that at least $1 billion in the bill will help reconnect cities and neighborhoods that had been racially segregated or divided by road projects. CORRECTIONS*
