The Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts has died at the age of 80, it has today been announced.
The London-born drummer joined the then-fledgling band in 1963 after meeting Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones while playing in rhythm and blues clubs.
Along with Jagger and Richards, Watts featured on every one of the band's studio albums. He was widely regarded as one of the greatest drummers of all time. Watts was due to tour the US with the band later this year.
Keith will probably outlive all of them.

I am a HUGE fan of classic rock, and you don't get more classic than the Rolling Stones. Charlie Watts was their anchor and a wonderful drummer. RIP Charlie, you were a classy, talented guy.

He was a great drummer, a faithful husband and family man and a person with personal standards and a lot of self-respect. We are diminished by Mr. Watts' death but he leaves behind a strong legacy.

Sad to hear. Glad I saw the Stones during their last US pre-pandemic tour. Barely got that once in a lifetime experience in.

A couple of decades ago Keith Richards said that looking behind himself onstage and seeing Charlie Watts sitting at the drum set was enormously comforting. That position in the band was always well covered. Over the years Watts, same as many veteran drummers, came to have some back problems that made performing painful. Yet he kept at it to the end.The Rolling Stones earned their renown. RIP Charlie.

These comments of knocking at doors and punching recall a great Charlie tale, which also illustrate his class.
Mick Jagger was drunk and called Watt's hotel room late at night looking for "my drummer."
Charlie got up, showered, shaved, dressed in a shirt and tie, went to Jagger's room, punched him in the face, told Mick, "Don't ever call me your drummer again. You're my f-ing singer!", and then went back to bed.

Agree with #7. Having played in a band as rhythm guitar in bars I'd rather forget , our drummer was the signal to the bass player and then me to lay down a solid foundation for the solos.
A good drummer makes everyone sound great...that's why studios set up 20 mics around the drummer.
RIP Charlie, you had a great run.

This one hurts even though I've been waiting for this kind of news for a while. The Stones are getting up there is age, and we've lost so many great rock musicians over the last ten years or so. I always thought Charlie would be the last to go. He seemed the most sedate of the bunch. I'm so glad I stood outside all night to get tickets in 1972 to see them. Got tickets right along side of the stage at stage level.

Keith has always said that Charlie was the heart of the band, and once he hung it up the rest of the band probably will too, so we'll see how long the Stones carry on as a band. Now I think I'm going to go pop "Some Girls" into the CD deck.

RIP - Charlie - how cool would it be if the Stones got Ringo to take his place on a tour. The melding of the 2 great 60s rock and roll bands.

To be picky, when they met it was Keith Richard, not Richards. He officially changed it because everyone put the “s” on his last name.

I'm taking my two grandsons to see them in Austin TX in November. Will miss Charlie a lot. Saw them in Dallas way back when, they were amazing! Will never be another like Charlie, or any of them. Growing old sucks. Godspeed Charlie!
