Surfing as an Olympic sport was made possible by centuries of American imperialism as the United States used surfing as a tool to expand its powers abroad, according to a recent Washington Post op-ed that warned the sport’s history would continue to be on display during the current 2021 Tokyo Games.
The piece, published on Sunday by Thomas Blake Earle, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University, attempts to depict the water sport’s history as one filled with American imperialism.

Duke Kahanamoku, nicknamed "The Duke" and "The Big Kahuna," is considered the father of modern surfing. The Hawaiian won five Olympic medals as a swimmer. The wapo needs to study the history of surfing before making fools of yourselves. It has nothing to do with centuries of US imperialism. What a bunch of Hodads and kooks. Get out of here before I get mad.

Yes, and the Beach Boys were trying to conquer the world. Their imperialist theme song was "Wish they all could be California girls."

White dudes surfing everywhere is massive cultural appropriation. Only native Hawaiians should surf.

For the sake of equity, or whatever, maybe they should have an Olympic competition to see how many liquor stores or Asian grocers that certain people can stick-up in a half hour.

I thought surfing was developed by Polynesians....oh well, the author will just argue that white surfers culturally appropriated it.
By the way, it was a white male who developed basketball.

The Olympics had banished baseball...it's only back because the Japanese play. Next banished for US imperial connections, I suppose, will be basketball, surfing and skateboarding.

Find his photo. He’s a pudgy soft-looking guy. This could be surfer envy? His theory is that American imperialists found surfing in Hawaii (where the “indigenous people” aka natives had done it on big heavy wooden boards, probably for centuries) and spread it around the world, setting the stage for its being an Olympic sport. He clearly spends too much time by himself, ruminating in a seriously damaged mind. This was disgorged and fit the WaPo narrative, so, voila! Instant celebrity.

This dork misses the point that the imperialists (our military) were in those far off places either freeing them from enemy takeovers/occupations or preventing the same. In response to the remark by th Archbishop of Canterbury that our plans for Iraq sounded like empire building, Powell said "Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.”
