If at first you don’t succeed, blame the equipment. At least, if you’re Bryson DeChambeau, you might.
The 2020 U.S. Open champion and long-drive specialist got off to a sluggish start in the 149th British Open at Royal St. George’s on Thursday. On a day when 47 players finished under par, DeChambeau put up a 1-over-par 71.
Things could have been worse. His prime-time television adversary, Phil Mickelson, carded an 80, which tied for last in the field to leave him 16 shots off the lead. DeChambeau is only seven shots back, not especially in or out of contention.
As part of the process, which included five bogeys and four birdies.

I used to work at a golf course. It was always the clubs, or the fairways, or the greens, or the caddies, or the course. But, it was never the golfer’s fault. Similar to bowlers who would blame the alley for missing his spare.

At the British Open, the younger golfers kick about the links. There was a negative quote a day or so ago from Koepke….

Those who read the article will find that he has not been happy for some time - through a number of revisions of the club head. As our resident pro opines, maybe it’s time to look at the person driving the driver?

racism at SI??
this won't be up long..
"As part of the process, which included five bogeys and four birdies, DeChambeau hit just four of the 14 fairways. And afterward, he blamed the arrow, not the Indian -- his driver."
arrow? Indian? ! (what is an "Indian"?)

It was known for years that Jack Nicklaus played a MacGregor (his sponsor) Tourney ball that was demonstrably inferior to others, most notably Titleist, and that some players even opined that the ball adversely affected his game.
Nicklaus never changed balls, and never said a word publicly.

Cobra’s full response to his comment was mind blowing. I worked in corporate PR for years and I’ve never seen anything like it.
Let’s just say ... they’re pis, um, angry. Rightfully so.

Bryson is not doing himself any favors by whining about his equipment. the Ill will towards towards him after the Keopka dust up is growing. After playing horribly on the back 9 at the US open Bryson didn't take responsibility and instead blamed 'bad breaks." I think he needs to grow up and start looking at the guy that swinging instead of what he swinging. his loose iron play and inconsistent putting had nothing to do with his driver. If I was cobra I'd drop him like a rock in the ocean. I hope he misses the cut for the rest of the year. I'm tired of his baloney.

The head pro at my home club (who had played successfully on the PGA Tour after WW2) warned me as a junior golfer not "to pull a hernia," which was his way of telling me to stay inside my shoes when swinging. (I used to come off both feet.) The only way to hit a 5 degree driver is HARD. Anyone who swings with the force of Bison has to have his timing right in order to keep his drives in the proper county, let alone the proper fairway. Now he's miffed at Cobra because he can't keep it in play. Idiot. He's got muscles between his ear. I liked Cobra's response. You can call it a divorce. Taylor Made, Callaway, and a few other manufacturers had better think twice before signing up Ro-chambeau. He might turn on therm after launching a few O.B.

During ancient days of my golfing, I had Hogan clubs, stiff shaft, D-3 swing weight (that was the nomenclature in the 19609s) and I discovered, by trial and error, that I drove the longest and best with my two wood. And I was a big hitter before there were big hitters on tour.

DeChambeau has quickly become a cry baby and a big pain in the arse with his body building antics to hit a ball farther., and his obsession with every shot having to be made using some sort of math algorithm. Hitting a ball farther is fine if you can keep it in the fairway. Yes he won the U.S. Open last year, but for the most part, if not for the golf media's attention with his hitting his driver 360 yards, one would never even know he was playing in a tournament because he's so far behind.

Meanwhile, Eldrick Woods is still sidelined, so the media really has little interest in the PGA right now.

Bison (HT, OP) has made playing golf a chore. He has gotten tiresome.
But I agree with him. It must be his clubs. Ask Tyrrell.

If he continues with this, no club manufacture will work with him. He has all his clubs to his specifications based on physics (he has a degree in physics).

"...the driver sucks" The way I read it is he is blaming his inability to use the club effectively.

Trying to control a driver with 5 degrees of loft is difficult. (My Great Big Bertha had 6 1/2 degrees, requiring a good swing to keep it in play.) As hard as Bison swings at it, the clubface might be in danger of collapsing. I've seen very strong players do that. Dial it back a bit, Mr. Gorilla. Enjoy hitting you 2-iron off the tee today.
