Country rock star Aaron Lewis’s patriotic anthem “Am I the Only One” soared up the iTunes charts, passing Big Red Machine’s “Renegade” featuring Taylor Swift, over the July 4th weekend. Two versions of Lewis’s song, the explicit version and radio edit, took the second and third spots on iTunes’ Top Songs on Saturday, pushing Swift to number five.(Song List) The patriotic anthem, dedicated to “all the patriots,” calls out left-wing activists and slams those who tore statutes down during the Black Lives Matter riots last year.(Photo) “Am I the only one here tonight, shakin’ my head and think’ something ain’t right,” Lewis sings. “Is it just me,

It is way too late to try to cancel Aaron Lewis. It is also way too late for Taylor Swift to be anything other than an older, richer version of Scoldilocks! Her millions perish with her. In about 2011 when she was nearly new and sort of fresh right out of Hendersonville, Tennessee, my DH said he would take me to a Swift concert if I would just get well and be able to walk to the venue. Bless his heart! (We went to an expensive dinner club instead.)

“Defund NPR” was trending on Twitter Monday morning after National Public Radio (NPR) criticized the Declaration of Independence on July 4.“In this thread of the Declaration of Independence, you can see a document with flaws and deeply ingrained hypocrisies,” NPR tweeted. “It also laid the foundation for this country’s collective aspirations — the hopes for what America could be.” (Tweet) NPR tweeted the entire contents of the Declaration of Independence in a thread but not before it slid in an anecdote about how the United States was not free for everyone.“It says ‘that all men are created equal’ — but women, enslaved people, Indigenous people and many others were not

American forces left Afghanistan’s Bagram Airfield over the weekend without notifying the new commander from the Kabul government — giving looters precious time to swipe anything that was not bolted down, shocking photos show. The US announced Friday that it had vacated Bagram as part of a final withdrawal the Pentagon says will be completed by the end of August. It is Afghanistan’s largest airfield and was the hub of America’s 20-year campaign to remove the Taliban from government, track down Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda cohorts, and keep the country’s fragile elected government in place amid a Taliban resurgence.

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — Sen. Tom Cotton said Tuesday that overturning Roe v. Wade may be “the best way” for Americans to handle the divisive issue of abortion. The Arkansas Republican weighed in on a major abortion case that the Supreme Court court will take up in October — one that advocates on both sides of the aisle say could directly challenge Roe v. Wade. This will be the first major abortion case in which all three of former President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court justice appointees participate, including Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who gained a seat on the court after a contentious confirmation process in October.

When Catherine the Great of Russia traveled in the late 18th-century, her former lover, Grigory Potemkin, would travel ahead of her and build hasty facades along the main thoroughfares in impoverished, bedraggled villages to create the impression of a prosperous nation. Thus, a Potemkin village is a fake that artificially puffs up a leader’s competence and popularity. Two recent videos, one of Biden’s fans turning out to greet him in Michigan and another of Trump’s fans turning out for him in Florida, show that Biden is a Potemkin president. It’s all fake.

The New York Times off-lead story Monday by national political correspondent Alexander Burns was headlined, “U.S. Surges, But Politics Hold Firm – Partisanship Immune to Signs of Recovery.” But it may as well have been titled, “What Is Wrong With You Trump Voters?” Flummoxed by Biden’s stubbornly so-so approval rating and continuing GOP strength, as shown in the 2020 elections, despite Biden’s apparently incredible achievements (like the pork-laden infrastructure bill?) Burns lashed out at Trump and his supporters with DNC-approved insults. In another age, the events of this season would have been nearly certain to produce a major shift in American politics -- or at least a meaningful, discernible one.
