Seventeen people have been injured in Los Angeles after a cache of homemade fireworks exploded as it was being destroyed by a bomb squad, damaging cars and smashing windows in homes. Police called in a bomb squad on Wednesday evening after a tip led them to seize some 5,000 pounds of illegal home-made and China-manufactured pyrotechnics at about noon, police said. LAPD Chief Michel Moore said three box trucks and a 53-foot trailer were brought in to load up the fireworks and move them to a safe location. However, 'improvised explosives' also were found that were too dangerous to move.

FTA: "The material was taken to a 'total containment vehicle,' Moore said. The multi-ton semi-tractor trailer rig has a spherical iron chamber that is designed to safely detonate explosives. Moore said less than 10 pounds of material was placed in the chamber, far less than its safety rating." … "'This vessel should have been able to safely dispose of that material,' LAPD Chief Michel Moore said at a press conference on Wednesday night. 'And you saw the resulting damage, and the total catastrophic failure of that containment vehicle,' Moore said."

Why don’t we put someone in charge based not on their expertise, but on their gender, skin color and sexual preferences? What could go wrong?

Why the hell would you detonate that around people and property? Just because a lifting chain or strap is supposed to hold the weight it doesn't mean you walk under the load.

All explosives are not alike. This is what can happen when police try to "play Army" without the required expertise.
This was LA; My guess is their experience was mostly from special effect explosions. Well, at least they lost their fancy bomb truck.

5000 lbs of fireworks and 10 lbs of improvised high explosive?
They put the 10 lbs in the chamber and it blew apart?
Something doesn't fit here. The blast vessel was obliterated by ten lbs of HE? Did they throw the 5000 lbs in there with it? Maybe there was an F15 or a nuke hidden in there with it.

Big Jim McBob and Billy Sol Hurok enjoyed the fireworks. They blowed up real good.

What amazes me is the people recording this video. Like nothing ever goes wrong with EXPLOSIVES. Like it was a parade or something.

After further looking into this: yes, they loaded it all in and detonated it.
Mistakes were made.

I'm no explosives expert so I'll leave it to those who know better.
The LAPD, however, in a statement posted to Twitter, said the cause of the blast was unclear.

There was something stronger than gunpowder in those explosives....Dynamite? C-4? Semtex? This was a stockpile that was in part to be used for urban warfare against the authorities. I'd bet money on it. Can you say Antifa and BLM?

Why didn't they take it out into a field far away from people and detonate it? What idiots.

My guess: they forgot to close up the chamber before detonation. Or perhaps hadn't yet put the explosives into the chamber.

Where they apparently messed up was in not separating the low order Chinese fireworks from the high order homemade explosives or HMEs and using two separate TCVs, which are total containment vessels, not vehicles, to transport the explosives to an impact range that I know very well LA has. Only there would it have been safe to dispose by initiation with a boosted side charge. Uncontained fireworks powder do little more than deflagrate (burn) when not contained in a vessel. In essence, the LAPD created a bomb by their actions. Most HMEs are more powerful by weight than commercial/military plastic explosives, like C4.
A TCV that is overloaded is really nothing more than an oversize grenade, as the body of the vessel becomes shrapnel by overpressure caused by detonation. I tested many such vessels for use by law enforcement, particularly in the aviation trade space, at the Aberdeen proving grounds in Maryland. Being familiar with LAPDs bomb squad, this surprises me; however, that was in the 90s and my familiarity didn't include being under a demo-communist ruling party and their race/gender-based leadership preferences.

Anyone who has ever lit a bunch of fireworks knows there is no such thing as a controlled firework.

10 lbs. of low-grade gunpowder vs. 10 lbs. of high-order explosives (RDX, TNT, etc.) are going to make one hell of a difference in the blast. Sounds like whoever is in charge of this clown show doesn't know the difference.
Take them out to the desert and detonate them in the wide open space. Containing them in a vessel just turned it into a giant grenade. Idiots.

I'm wondering how many readers failed to read the last two sentences posted; or having done so, were unable to process what they read. The posted paragraph clearly states, "LAPD Chief Michel Moore said three box trucks and a 53-foot trailer were brought in to load up the fireworks and move them to a safe location. However, 'improvised explosives' also were found that were too dangerous to move." Some explosives were found to be TOO DANGEROUS to move! That last sentence got my attention. What could go wrong?!!

Used enough dynamite there, Butch? Butch and Sundance were trying to blow a safe on a train and blew the whole rail car to smithereens. LA just lost their fancy truck and will also get sued by the injured and a bunch who weren't injured but will claim PTSD and anything else to get "free" money.
