Target store closings show limits
of pledge to Black communities

Original Article

Baltimore—When Target announced that it was opening a store in Mondawmin, a predominantly Black neighborhood in Baltimore, a city struggling with crime and poverty, it seemed like a ticket to a turnaround. And from the start, it was a practical success and a point of community pride. The store, which opened in 2008, carried groceries, operated a pharmacy and had a Starbucks cafe—the only one in this part of Baltimore's west side.(Snip) But in February 2018, with almost no warning or explanation, Target closed the store. Residents, especially those without cars, lost a convenient place to shop for quality goods.

Comments:

Article says the company was spending $360,000 a year ($30K each month) to keep an armed policeman in the store, and despite what the former manager says, there's no doubt the volume of shoplifting is a key reason why they saw the need for added protection. Also, a Community that ties its self-worth to the presence of a mass marketer should reexamine its priorities. They had the mass marketer, but they chased it away, and since nothing is their fault, The White Man and capitalism are to blame.

Right. Because racism makes retailers close profitable stores. These idiots who write this stuff have zero experience in the real world. It's all a "Mom's basement on social media" world view. They have no idea that history says they're the first to go.

No company is going to stick around if it isn't making money. If the community doesn't police itself, and make it a safe and profitable community to live and work in? Well... bye, bye!... It used to be, cops were hired from within a community. They knew everyone, walked a beat, and punished idiots that did damage to community property. Now, with no support? You live like trash. Did it to yourselves, trusting the Democrats.

The people who live in those areas need to look in the mirror to figure out who is causing the stores to close. Tell your people to quit shoplifting and treating the store as a candy shop every time there is a grievance with the local authorities. Respect the companies that invest millions and take risks to open in your area and maybe you will be respected in return.

Shoplifting cannot be stopped by armed guards at the entrances. My own Walmart has walled off the make-up merchandise to try to discourage high-dollar/small-item theft. It will not succeed. America has been poisoned by its loss of Judeo-Christian principles and those who think theft is only a crime if you get caught. We no longer culturally believe that God is always watching, ever mindful, and that His mercy requires penitence.

And just how much in undocumented shopping was flowing out of this store? I would be the shoplifting losses were astronomical, since blacks have been told that stealing from whitey is just part of their reparations. Call it racism if you wish, but when the stereotype fits, maybe it isn't a stereotype after all.

What OP said. Too many blacks - male and female -believe “if I can walk out with it, why pay for it?" Until these neighborhoods start policing themselves, this sort of thing will happen. This isn’t racism. It’s business.

Between letting men in ladies' bathrooms, to building stores in high-crime areas, Target makes some of the stupidest business decisions of any company on Earth!!!! Don't get me wrong, I understand that Target wanted to show how "woke" they were with this stupid move. And they knew it would be a "money pit". But with the great Trump economy, they could afford to swallow those losses to earn their "wokeness" points. But now, with the hard economic hit of the pandemic, combined with the horrible inflation of biden-nomics, suddenly they realized that they can't take this monetary hit any more. So now they look like huge greedy racists for closing this store, and it is a well-deserved hit in the rear-end!!!!!

What is it with black neighborhoods? I was in a Walmart recently in Fayetteville, NC., in a black neighborhood. All of the men's shaving supplies were locked up in a glass case...razors, shaving cream, etc...These are not high-priced items. The place felt like an armed camp. Don't people learn that stealing is wrong?

FTA: "If shrinkage was a problem, hire more security guards or use technology to stop people from stealing." So it's the store's fault, the stock was too easy to steal without more guards or other preventives. This is a PASTOR speaking, a community leader. Imagine that...it's truly mindboggling. Thou Shalt NOT Steal, reverend. But that's too hard to follow in The Community, all God-fearing folks.

If it was like most stores in the inner city, shoplifting was rampant. The security guard or guards were probably overrun with the amount of shoplifters at any given moment. Having worked with someone who had a part time job as a security guard in just such an area, they were constantly chasing and stopping people who had shoplifted. No store can stay in business if 15% or more of their merchandise is walking out the door.

Shrinkage is a problem with all retail stores. Even in "nice" areas, you will have small items getting nicked. It's part of human nature and made worse by our ongoing moral collapse and ignoring Jewish-Christian ethics. As one poster said, the shrinkage becomes out of control in black neighborhoods and the store can't make a profit or even break even. I doubt that this will change as a lot of blacks look on thieving as reparations from Whitey.

Commercial Retail Enterprises are "FOR PROFIT" and not Charities to help the needy or to bring about social change. To think otherwise is a Utopian socialist mindset of using other peoples enterprise and investment to meet the needs of others. If that is what is the desired outcome than the State and the people should support the establishment and the SECURITY of their own "shopping convenience " outlets, or those of recognize charitable outlets like the Salivation Army and St. Vincent de Paul.
