We knew it was coming. This afternoon, as expected, we had a 50-50 vote which means Republicans have filibustered the Democrats’ voting rights bill. Here’s the video: The NY Times says all eyes now turn to nuking the filibuster: Senate Republicans on Tuesday blocked the most ambitious voting rights legislation to come before Congress in a generation, using the filibuster to deal a blow to a bid by President Biden and Democrats to counter a wave of state-level ballot restrictions and fueling a political battle that promises to shape the 2022 elections.

Any Republican who votes for those Democrat bills would be committing political suicide for himself or herself, and the Republican Party that would never have a chance to win future elections. Those bills only help Democrat election chances and sink Republican chances. You have to realize those facts, as the Democrats would never propose an election bill and nuke the filibuster if they ever thought that those actions would help the Republican Party to win future elections. I thought that there is a provision in the US Constitution giving authority to the 50 State legislatures to make the election laws for their States, if so, the proposed Democrat bill taking that authority away from the States and federalizing what the election laws will be would seem to be unconstitutional? Not even the mighty Democrats can change provisions written in the US Constitution by passing a law in Congress, they need a constitutional amendment to get that job done. Good luck getting the Republican States to agree with that.

Manchin screwed up big time. Since the dems were going to lose anyway, he could have voted with the Constitution and preserved what is left of his image. Instead he revealed the snake under the pretty feathers. Sorry you were stupid, Joe.

Those that are upset with Manchin don't understand the situation here. This vote was irrelevant, as long as the filibuster is preserved, so Manchin could do whatever he thinks is good for his idea of the 'behind the scenes politics' in DC, and it DOES NO HARM. The only vote that Manchin casts (along with Sen. Sinema) that really matter are their votes on the filibuster rule. THAT makes a huge difference. As long as both continue to support keeping the filibuster, their votes on bills which will fail are unimportant, and they shouldn't be criticized for doing whatever they think is most useful to them, because the bill will definitely fail - with or without their vote - as long as the filibuster is preserved and 10 Repubs don't defect and vote for the bill.

The U.S. National Institutes of Health deleted gene sequences taken from early COVID-19 carriers at the request of Chinese researchers, raising concerns about Beijing’s efforts to conceal information crucial to the virus origin investigation. A Chinese scientist asked the NIH to eliminate the sequences after submitting them three months prior, the NIH told the Wall Street Journal. “Submitting investigators hold the rights to their data and can request withdrawal of the data,” the NIH said in a statement. According to the NIH statement, the researcher asked that the sequences be removed from the NIH database because they had been updated

We’ve reported repeatedly on the issues with Joe Biden’s confusion and incoherence based mainly on the videos we’ve seen and statements he’s made. But beyond that, one would have to imagine there’s a lot going on that we’re not seeing because media isn’t hearing about it or isn’t reporting it. What must the folks behind the scenes, like the Democrats and Republicans who have to deal with Joe Biden, be seeing and saying about it? The AP did pick up some comments from Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY) that show the stark reality that the lawmakers have to deal with when it comes to Joe Biden.

Unaccompanied minors are being housed at Fort Bliss, just north of El Paso, Texas. A temporary shelter was required at the Army base to accommodate the overwhelming number of children crossing the southern border. It is described as a tent city in the Texas desert. It currently houses 1,600 teenagers but can hold up to 10,000 if necessary. The huge spike in illegal migration since Biden took office quickly filled available shelters along the Rio Grande Valley border so the shelter on the base in El Paso – the far western part of Texas – was opened to ease overcrowding.

The poll included 1,200 likely voters, but it is not clear how those voters were distributed among the 26 states. Of the states that were surveyed, ten were classified as red, nine as purple, and seven as blue. The red states included Florida and Ohio, while the only large blue state surveyed was Illinois. Minnesota was among the blue states included in the poll.

The White House on Tuesday acknowledged it will not meet its goal of having 70 percent of all American adults receive at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine by July 4, a rare setback for a president who has put the nation’s recovery from the pandemic at the center of his agenda. It will be the second time the administration will miss a goal related to the pandemic — in part because it has repeatedly set objectives that are deliverable. Officials also indicated Monday that President Biden is likely to miss his target of shipping 80 million vaccines overseas by the end of the month, blaming it on logistical challenges.

The program is centered around a workbook for teachers entitled 'A Pathway to Equitable Math Instruction' which asserts that America's education system – even mathematics instruction – reinforces the dominant power structures of white colonizers. Grading students, asking them to show their work, requiring participation and even pushing them to get the right answer are depicted in the workbook as harmful to minorities.

Cornell University has introduced an astronomy course to explore the connection between the term black holes and “racial blackness” — proof, say critics, that even the hard sciences aren’t immune to universal “racial hysteria.”The course, titled “Black Holes: Race and the Cosmos,” uses work from black studies theorists, artists and fiction writers to challenge “conventional wisdom” about the role that race plays in astronomy.“Conventional wisdom would have it that the ‘black’ in black holes has nothing to do with race. Surely there can be no connection between the cosmos and the idea of racial blackness. Can there?” reads the college catalog description.
